Police investigate web sale of AIDS-tainted blood

Mr Fajardo told police it was all “a joke among friends,” but authorities are investigating whether he established contact with potential buyers via e-mail. He remains free during the investigation.

Police identified the advert’s author as Carlos Fajardo Zamora, who lives in Quilpue, west of Santiago. Authorities searched his home but found no trace of contaminated blood.

The tainted blood was “ideal for suicide,” the advert said. It was posted for nine days and received 45 page views before police discovered it.

The advert, posted on the Latin American internet sales site www.deremate.com, offered “blood with AIDS for sale, 100,000 pesos (£95) for five millilitres."

Chilean authorities have launched a probe into an internet advert offering to sell blood contaminated with AIDS.

Ah, yes, one of favorite bizarro gadgets is getting a much-deserved refresh, and rather than changing the game completely, it's simply the same fun-filled container in belt clip sized. The infamous Antquarium has now shrunk, and is apparently ready to rock on your child's belt, backpack, or headband. As expected, the gel-packed enclosure provides "everything the ants need" to survive in such hellacious conditions, and even includes an ant catcher for those who aren't keen on touching insects with their bare hands. While we can't exactly say toting an ant farm around our waist is on our list of hopeful accomplishments in life, the pictured ~~nerd~~ momma's boy seems pretty stoked about swiping the critters away from their homeland for personal pleasure, so if you'd like to encourage your child to follow the pathway to eternal singleness, you can snatch this up now for $12.95.

So, apparently the guys at NEC thought it would be cool to make a wine-tasting robot. The robot -- pictured above -- fires a beam of light into the wine, and then uses an infrared spectrometer to analyze the reflection. It studies the chemical composition of the wine and delivers an instant verdict about how good it is. It's a neat trick, and it has other health-related skills: It can determine whether an apple is sweet or sour, or could even warn its owner if a food is too salty or fatty.

But the NEC guys decided to show off the robot to the media, and that's when it revealed its morbid secret. As the Associated Press reports:

When a reporter's hand was placed against the robot's taste sensor, it was identified as prosciutto. A cameraman was mistaken for bacon.

Yeah, we're screwed. The robots think we taste like crispy breakfast treats.
