“Photography is a small voice, at best, but sometimes one photograph, or a group of them, can lure our sense of awareness”. That quotation by American photojournalist, war photographer and artist [1918 – 1978] highlights some of the forces of reportage photography: its value as a historical document for information and power to change the looks and the realities. For the fifth consecutive year, the Centre for Contemporary Culture of Barcelona (CCCB) presents the World Press Photo 09, an important event that makes us aware of current affairs around the world. Another event you can not miss is the FotoPres09 at Caixa Forum, where you will have another opportunity to reflect on contemporary society and its conflicts.

Sex and drugs – a cool lifestyle or your death sentence?

Just about everyone has tried some kind of drugs in their life. Consuming drugs at the weekends, or even taking some drugs at home every day has unfortunately become something very normal. Although drugs can help you to loose shyness and fear and feel free at parties regarding sexual behaviour, they have a real negative influence. Also, the stimulating effects of drugs have their limits and each kind of drug abuse can put you straight on the highway to hell. So, be aware of that!

Marihuana, cocaine, hashish, amphetamines, heroin, ecstasy, alcohol…the list of different types of drugs is already known, but not so the negative effects they have on our sex life. First you smoke a joint and have a beer in a relaxing atmosphere at home, then you go for some drinks with your friends in a pub and later you’ll end up in a club or a discotheque.

Love at first sight - utopia or reality

How would our life be without the most beautiful thing of the world, love? Well, it would be very sad and boring. Each one of us has surely had this special feeling of butterflies in the stomach; suddenly your legs are shaking and you can’t avoid this silly look you have on your face, neither can you stop looking or staring at this fascinating person who has just come through the door. As you can see, love at the first sight can really stream through your body within seconds. How is it possible to fall in love so fast with someone whose character we don’t even really know? Love at first sight: utopia or reality?

But where does this feeling of ‘that’s the right one’ come from? How can we be so sure about having found the great love of our life? Or was it really Cupid’s love arrows? In this case, scientists don’t spoil our romanticism and support our theory with studies and analysis.

We live in a society of the rush-hour, stress and urgency. Unfortunately, we have moved towards this way in all aspects of our daily life, including sex. Nowadays our linguistic landscape is getting more and more marked by the most modern words and terms. Not only words like “the international financial crisis” are fashionable, but as well the most bizarre ones which even our grandmother uses in her daily speech. The former “I’ll call you later” has been transformed into a “Hey, let’s skype this afternoon, ok?”. Meanwhile the so called hot buttons are flooding our television programme with game shows presented by scantily-clad beautiful women or hyperactive men. Nowadays, we spend all day long downloading programmes, or making backups of our computer systems. And don’t get frightened when you see a hysterical person screaming “Oh my god, they’ve Googled me”. Welcome to the 21st century!

Discovering that your mate is unfaithful

Some people argue that monogamy is an invention or, worse, an imposition of religious and civil institutions that goes against human nature. Should we think that those who say this use it to systematically betray their partner? Or are those with the most discreet manner the most unfaithful? Or as the saying goes: “his bark is worse than his bite!”… Let’s say you discover that he/she’s unfaithful!

It is not necessary to read hidden SMS messages as he/she may already have deleted the most embarrassing ones. Don’t try to access his email account or investigate all his Facebook contacts: it won’t be very effective. Concentrate on his/her behaviour: if he has changed his schedules and customs, if he gets nervous or he babbles when you ask him about the tennis match last Friday with a supposed colleague – instead of going to the cinema with you.

Many people move from one point of the world to the other to visit their relatives or just to enjoy a few fun and relaxing days.

So don’t leave anything to chance. A vacation should be planned in advance and if you want to bring your pet with you, you’ll need a few days to take care of all its documentation and get it in order

I’ve put together 11 things to hate driving in Spain just for fun because we love Spaniards really!

1. Spaniards have little respect and are not very courteous on the road. Just try pulling out of a turning and see who stops. You might be in for a long one!

2. Hogging the outside lanes on motorways. Yes, let’s hold up all the traffic on the motorway by hogging the outside lane by driving at 50kph and ignore all requests to swap lanes. We can also add to this, the middle lane gang who won’t get into the inside lane for love nor money. And they drive at 50kph just to make sure they piss everyone off.

3. If you have a VW Golf beware as it’s like a magnet to every Spanish roadhog and they’ll see it as a sign to cut you up, race you and also to give you the proverbial “bird”.

4. Old gits in 4×4’s. They seem to own the road in Spain. The bigger the better.
