jQuery and Microsoft

I'm excited today to announce that Microsoft will be shipping jQuery with Visual Studio going forward. We will distribute the jQuery JavaScript library as-is, and will not be forking or changing the source from the main jQuery branch. The files will continue to use and ship under the existing jQuery MIT license.

We will also distribute intellisense-annotated versions that provide great Visual Studio intellisense and help-integration at design-time.

For example:

The jQuery intellisense annotation support will be available as a free web-download in a few weeks (and will work great with VS 2008 SP1 and the free Visual Web Developer 2008 Express SP1). The new ASP.NET MVC download will also distribute it, and add the jQuery library by default to all new projects.

We will also extend Microsoft product support to jQuery beginning later this year, which will enable developers and enterprises to call and open jQuery support cases 24x7 with Microsoft PSS.

Updates: ZoomIt v2.10, Process Monitor v1.34, BgInfo v4.13

ZoomIt v2.10: Includes a zoom-out effect when you exit zoom mode and enables you to specify a background bitmap for the break timer.

Process Monitor v1.34: This update adds the ability to filter on result values.

BgInfo v4.13: Now displays correct version information for Windows Server 2008.

Copy Source As Html (CopySourceAsHtml) on VPC

I've been using Copy Source As Html (CopySourceAsHtml) for Visual Studio 2008 RTM for a while, but recently tried to work with it on a Virtual PC (VPC). When I tried copying a code snippet to the clipboard I ran into an exception: "Requested Clipboard operation did not succeed."

I found the code that I had to change in Mike Glaser's Blog, but to make thinks a little shorter:

1. Download this ZIP file that contains the add in.

2. Extract it to the following folders:

Vista:
- C:\Users\<username>\Documents\Visual Studio 2008\Addins
XP:
- C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Application Data\Microsoft\VisualStudio\9.0\Addins
- C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\My Documents\Visual Studio 2008\Addins

Code Project Browser Add-in Updated to Support VS 2008

I also love convenience, and that's why I made this add-in. It lets you browse The Code Project directly in Visual Studio 2005 or 2008. When you click on a link that would normally download a zip file, it asks you instead if you'd like to open the sample up using The Code Project Browser. If you say yes, the add-in will download the file, unzip it to a base My Documents\My Code Project Samples directory, then load it directly. It also provides a sidebar where you can view, reload and delete all of the projects you've downloaded.

Intellisense for jQuery in Visual Studio 2008

These days I write JavaScript than C#, or at least it seems like it sometime. To make my work a little easier I have started using the JavaScript support in Visual Studio 2008 that provides Intellisense support if you put Xml Doc into your JavaScript. The problem with working with jQuery in Visual Studio 2008 is that it happens fail due to how the jQuery script is written. For reasons why Intellisense fails, you can read more from Jeff King. Adjusting jQuery to make Visual Studio happy is not really a priority and not even necessary. I can simply reference the real jQuery script from the web pages and within my scripts I can reference a stub for jQuery that is simply a shell with Xml Doc.

I copied the documentation right from the jQuery website and put it all into the following stub named jquery.intellisense.js, shown below:

Most simple Visual Studio 2005 add-ins could actually work with Visual Studio 2008. I'm not talking about huge add-ins like Resharper here, but most of the small utilities we find online. If you really want to keep using your add-in, and it doesn't provide a VS 2008 version yet, and you didn't have VS 2005 installed on the machine when you installed VS 2008 (as it tries to migrate the add-in when you install it in presence of VS 2005), there's is something very simple you can try that can work for many VS2005 add-in.

Disclaimer: Of course I have to repeat: This should work with many VS add-ins, but it will not work with all of them.
