you click on them. If you search Google, for instance, this LinkScanner automatically visits each address that turns up on Google's results page.

According to the company, more than 20 million people have downloaded the new AVG 8, and this has caused a huge up-tick in traffic on sites across the web

Because the scanner attempts to disguise itself as a real live human click, webmasters who rely on log files for their traffic numbers may be unaware their stats are skewed. And others complain that LinkScanner has added extra dollars to their bandwidth bill.

Daniel Brandt, who runs Wikipedia Watch, estimates that LinkScanner traffic to the site has outstripped legitimate clicks by nearly ten times. In this graph, the pink line represents suspected LinkScanner scans, the blue line legitimate clicks:

Tags: internet

<clipSource>http://www.theregister.co.uk/2008/06/26/avg_disguises_fake_traffic_as_ie6/</clipSource>

Architecture of Change

clipped by: Subject: Server Room Access

Hi all.

As you all are aware, we have new tenants that have moved into
the 2nd floor suites. The access to the server room is now via
the women’s bathroom.

There will be a sign on the woman’s door that can be changed
from OPEN to CLOSED and vice versa.

Should you need to enter the server room, please change the sign
to CLOSED. Once you are done, please change it back to OPEN.

Once you enter the bathroom, you will be able to access the
server room via the handicapped stall. Please close the stall
door prior to entry, just in case someone doesn’t see that the
bathroom is closed.

I know this isn’t ideal, but if we adhere to this protocol, I
don’t think anyone will be disrupted.

Thanks! Let me know if you have any questions.

The "Golden Rule of Data Manipulation" is a simple, but important rule that you should always follow when designing a database, writing database code, or really writing any application code at all for that matter:

"It is always easier and more flexible to combine data elements rather than to break them apart"

In other words: Concatenation is easy. Parsing is hard. Often, very hard -- or even impossible depending on the data.

A Data Model that requires Parsing = A Poor Data Model

Tags: programming

<clipSource>http://weblogs.sqlteam.com/jeffs/archive/2008/06/11/golden-rule-of-data-manipulation.aspx#38935</clipSource>

The Sunspot Enigma: The Sun is “Dead”—What Does it Mean for Earth?

clipped by: travislaborde
clipper's remarks: So wait.. we have global warming due to flushing our toilets too much, but global cooling due to this behavior of the Sun...

/too much for me

Clip Source: www.dailygalaxy.com

The Sunspot Enigma: The Sun is “Dead”—What Does it Mean for Earth?

Dark spots, some as large as 50,000 miles in diameter, typically move across the surface of the sun, contracting and expanding as they go. These strange and powerful phenomena are known as sunspots, but now they are all gone. Not even solar physicists know why it’s happening and what this odd solar silence might be indicating for our future.

Although periods of inactivity are normal for the sun, this current
period has gone on much longer than usual and scientists are starting
to worry—at least a little bit.

He also noted
that the world cooled quickly between January last year and January
this year, by about 0.7C.

"This is the fastest temperature change in the instrumental record, and
it puts us back to where we were in 1930," Dr Chapman noted in The
Australian today.

<clipSource>http://www.dailygalaxy.com/my_weblog/2008/06/the-sunspot-mys.html</clipSource>

DNN: Authenticate users against another portal

clipped by: travislaborde

Clip Source: www.dotnetnuke.com

In some cases one might find it desirable to authenticate the users of second portal against the user database of the first portal.
