I Would Do Anything For Love But I Won't Cook That

I've never been a fan of "foodie-ism" or really, any cultural movement that muddles art/commerce/housework to the detriment of the public good (i.e. fashion, blogging) but this food blogger I met recently, Michele, is maybe the Joan Didion to my Bill Buckley on these matters. (She also dresses well.) These cupcakes are made from meatloaf and mashed potatoes and that is awesome. [FineFuriousLife]

Entertainment Weekly have an interview with Eliza Dushku and Joss Whedon . And the LA Times speak to Joss about Dollhouse.

We can confirm the launch - it's mid January, it's Monday, it's 8pm on FOX. It's a major launch for them - they aren't trying to bury this show, and have been incredibly supportive of the people working on this one. Dollhouse will act as a lead in to 24, which is returning for its seventh season.

Also, the episode order has been increased, so there's 13 planned episodes so far, with an expansion to 22 if required for this coming season.

On top of this, each episode will be longer than a usual TV episode is, as FOX are airing Dollhouse without many adverts. Yes, you read that right. As a result each episode will clock in at a minimum of 50 minutes instead of the usual 42. This is part of a FOX initiative called Remote Free TV. FOX president Kevin Reilly talks about it here.

There are few institutions in the world that claim to embody and protect humanity's highest dreams and values. The International Olympic Committee, custodian of the Olympic Games, is one of them.

Any organization that lays claim to the lofty moral goal of protecting mankind's universal dreams and aspirations should, from time to time, be subject to a reality check: rhetoric of morality and peace is without substance if words are not matched by deeds.

There is a direct connection - financial, military, political and strategic- between this year's Olympic host, China, and the humanitarian catastrophe in Darfur that has been called the first genocide of the 21st century.

What does Darfur have to do with the International Olympic Committee? The IOC chose this year's Olympic host, China. China is underwriting the genocide in Darfur. While the IOC remains silent.

BLDGBLOG: First, on the most basic level, could you talk about what makes a landscape "Gothic"? Is it the weather, the landforms, the isolation, the plantlife…? Further, in your own work, what is it, on a psychological level, that unites, say, the crooked and leafless trees of the British moors with the coastal swamps of Honduras?

I’m thinking of what David Lynch did in Blue Velvet, with a scene of apparent utter normality. Think of the opening scene where a man is watering his garden and everything seems, well, perfect in that neat and orderly suburban way and yet his camera then goes beneath the grass and we see all sorts of forms of life that are slimy and grotesque and that aren’t apparent in that hygienic world above.

So there may be something in that: the suburb as the most Gothic of sites. Think of the work, say, of Gregory Crewdson.

I am a product of suburban middle America . I am both repulsed and intrigued to watch the landscape of my childhood change from corn fields and farms into a land of mega plexes, super malls, convenience stores and corporate chains. Although I am disgusted at the alarming rate that development is changing the American landscape, I realize that I am just as much a part of the dilemma and landscape as everyone else.

My current body of work looks at the ideas of comfort, contradictions and connections through the lens of my daily life. Looking at the contradictions between my viewpoints and actions in daily life, I am continually mapping the connection between experience and conscious thought with an ironic or humorous eye.

Stone Temple Pilots: They're actually good! (Really!)

STP’s B-level status in ’90s rock history has practically nothing to do with the music and almost everything to do with the misfortune of coming out during one of the most annoyingly cred-conscious periods in the history of mainstream rock. Back in the early ’90s, natural born arena rock band Pearl Jam was praised for making its music less melodic and more boring, because this meant they cared more about the fans than being famous or something. STP, on the other hand, made no apologies for swinging the hammer of the gods for shirtless men and dirty girls at the Enormodome in your town, and were condemned as lame ass poseurs because of it.

STP’s bad luck was being a polished, immediately accessible, larger-than-life cock rock band at one of the few times in rock history when cock rock bands weren’t automatically cool. Instead, STP lived in a time when snarky, willfully amateurish bands reigned supreme.

1. Be impeccable with your word.

Words have immeasurable power, so use them with care. Say only what you mean, and remember your opinion isn’t fact. Silence is better than saying something you’ll regret.

2. Don’t take anything personally.

Here I’ll quote the book, “Nothing other people do is because of you. It is because of themselves.” That guy honking at you just spilled scalding coffee all over his lap, the boss screaming at you is going through a divorce. Their stuff has nothing to do with your stuff, and assuming you’re the root cause of someone’s behavior is not only self-centered, it’s also a big waste of energy.

3. Don’t make assumptions.

You can spend hours generating theories about why someone did something, or you can just ask. When someone lashes or does something unexpected, save time by seeking clarification.

4. Do your best.

Do the best you can with the conflict in front of you, and you won’t need to waste brain power on self-judgements or regrets.
