Two-thirds of the world now mobile connected

Six in ten people around the world now have mobile phone subscriptions, signaling that mobiles are the communications technology of choice particularly in poor countries, according to a U.N. report.

By the end of last year there were an estimated 4.1 billion subscriptions globally, compared with about 1 billion in 2002, the International Telecommunication Union said.

Internet use more than doubled. An estimated 23 per cent of people on the planet used the net last year, up from 11 per cent in 2002. Poor countries still lag far behind on internet access, with only 1 in 20 people in Africa going online in 2007 - the most recent year for which firm figures were available.

The so-called 'digital divide' between rich and poor countries remained unchanged between 2002 and 2007.

"Despite significant improvements in the developing world, the gap between the ICT haves and have-notes remains," the report found.

Virtual tour of art masterpieces

For the first time, the Google Earth mapping program has been adapted to allow armchair art lovers to "fly" to a world-famous museum, drop through the roof and examine the masterpieces on display in almost microscopic detail.

A zoom function allows users to "crawl across" the surface of the painting and fill their screen with a single brushstroke or fissure. Because some of the works are so large - Titian's portrait of Emperor Charles V measures 3.3 metres by 2.8 metres, for example - a visitor using Google Earth will be able to see far more detail than someone standing directly in front of the painting.

Given Synder's history in this case, the photo of her drinking and the accompanying note may not be really to blame for her lack of degree. In a way, they were just the proverbial straw that broke the camel's back. If Synder had been a good employee (student teacher) up until the point the photo had been discovered, she probably would have been disciplined, but not let go, and thus would not not have lost her degree.

Ironically, one of Synder's MySpace postings in question began,

I have nothing to hide. I am over 21, and I don't say anything that will hurt me (in the long run). Plus, I don't think that they would stoop that low as to mess with my future.

MySpace and Auditude have rolled out an innovative solution to the problem of people posting pirated television show snippets on the internet.

Auditude technology automatically identifies user-posted segments of shows, then weaves in advertising for copyright owners and tells viewers whose program they are watching.

Instead of copyright holders chasing down television show video posted on MySpace pages and then demanding clips be removed in accordance with US law, they can let internet users be delivery channels complete with advertising.

US-based Auditude has spent four years "fingerprinting" television broadcasts to enable its software to instantly identify online snippets of shows that have aired, Auditude chief executive Adam Cahan said.

IN December, Johnny Chung Lee, then a Ph.D. candidate, posted a five-minute video on YouTube that became an Internet sensation.

The video showed how, in a few easy steps, the Nintendo Wii remote controller — or “Wiimote” — could transform a normal video screen into a virtual reality display, with graphics that seemed to pop through the screen and into the living room. So far, the video has been seen more than six million times.

He chooses his personal projects based on what he calls their “work-to-wow” ratio. “I want to get the biggest wow for the smallest amount of work,” he explains, adding that for him, wow is synonymous with impact.

Free uni wi-fi swamped with illegal downloads

The University of NSW has threatened to axe its free wireless internet service because students are bringing in their laptops and using them to download pirated music, movies and games.

UNSW has been issuing fines of up to $1000 to students who use its free wireless network for illegal downloading. Money generated by the fines is donated to fund student facilities around campus.

She pointed to recent research by German online traffic management company iPoque that found 57 per cent of all Australian internet traffic was generated by peer-to-peer networks, which contain mainly pirated content.

A year ago the university installed filters that prevented students from downloading material over peer-to-peer and BitTorrent networks, "but that's not to say that students aren't very innovative and work around things".

Tiny shop serves software on demand

In a shop that's not much bigger than a coffee cart, a Sydney technology entrepreneur is from today selling a wider range of software titles than any other store in the country.

Customers use one of several computer terminals to choose from an initial range of 680 titles and, within five minutes of clicking order, they are handed a disc - with user manual - in a hard plastic case.

All of the manufacturing, including the printing of the manual and cover slip and burning the software to disc, is done on the spot. The only thing missing is the shrink-wrapped cardboard box.

New technology is fast blurring the line between retailer and manufacturer.

"We've got the widest range in the market and we're never out of stock," Sampson said.

Some of the initial publishers Sampson has signed up include Corel, Ulead, Atari, Activision, Eidos, Ubisoft, McAfee, Kaspersky, Acronic, Sage, Roxia and Eurotalk.

Here’s another stunner: Apple’s $4.6 billion in revenue from phones is more than its sales of computers. Analysts expected Apple to sell about $4 billion in Macintosh computers and $1.6 billion in iPods in the quarter. (By unit, Apple was a little light of estimates for computers and right on target for iPods. The analysts are still crunching their numbers to turn the unit count, which Apple discloses, into revenue estimates.)

In another question, Mr. Jobs was asked whether Apple needs to make more variations of the iPhone to match the wide range of shapes, sizes, features and colors that other handset makers create to tap into every possible pocket of demand.

No, Mr. Jobs said. Again, he compared phones to computers, saying that in the future they will be differentiated more by software than hardware design.

“From everything I’ve heard,” Mr. Jobs said. “Babe Ruth only had one home run, and he kept hitting it over and over.”

a second radio band at five gigahertz is being opened to bypass the crowding and boost the speed of today's home and office wireless networks, which run on the original Wi-Fi band of 2.4GHz.

"Five gigahertz lets you create what we call an 'entertainment-grade' network for online gaming from your Xbox or PlayStation as well as moving all your video and audio, all your high definition multimedia content, around your home to a TV screen," says Graeme Reardon, regional director for Linksys Australia and New Zealand.

"At the same time you can keep 2.4GHz for what we'd classify as your data network, which is email and web browsing and things like that."
