clipper's remarks: I saw a tiny bit of this then my mind wandered to how its possible to overcome isolation
through the internet
for example there are loads of apps for the iphone/ipod touch that have location aware social networking which in a city area the possibility of making connections would be massive I presume.
If we could make this type of technology available more widely say in libraries or even community iniatives would could bring more people together and help people from becoming isolated
oh and the title's from the beatles song

Lucy, 27, cuts a small, unassuming figure. She speaks slowly, dreamily, looking around at no one in particular as she peels the sticker off her beer bottle. "I was thinking about whether it would be possible to find someone that no one knows, in this world of social networking and Facebook."

She had read an article on unattended funerals and the questions played on her mind for months after. "These people - is it a choice that they make, to know no one and be cut off from the world? Or is it that once you start to slip between the cracks it's difficult to come back up again?"

idea was accepted, she thinks, because it is "not your typical TV documentary

I like exploring the minutiae of things, things that aren't necessarily newsworthy," she says.

you've heard somewhere that "there's more than enough energy coming from the sun to power all of humanity".

then put it in perspective.

to power the whole world with solar power, there would be many problems to solve. What to do at night

Long distance transmission lines? centralized, or decentralized? Solar thermal, or photovoltaic? Where to put the solar power plants (on commercial rooftops, maybe)? etc.

How much solar energy is hitting the Earth, and how much land would it take to power the whole world with solar power?

solar power plants in 6 "hot spots" around the world: North-America, South-America, North Africa, the Middle-East, Central Asia and Australia

it would be manageable.

As you can see in the image below, there's a lot of solar energy potentially available to us. Even wind power (which is also caused by the sun) is a lot compared to total world energy consumption:

Another plan for a large wind power generation facility has arisen and this time it’s in a state that’s never been mentioned before on Things Are Good: South Dakota, USA. South Dakota is now considering a plan for creating the world’s largest windfarm!

Clipper Windpower of Carpinteria, Calif., intends to erect enough wind turbines in several South Dakota counties to produce up to 6,000 megawatts of electricity, said Bob Gates, the firm’s senior vice president of commercial operations.

That would be eight times larger than the biggest wind farm in the world, a 735-megawatt FPL Energy facility with 421 turbines stretching across three Texas counties.
