iPod Touch Hacked

It didn’t take long but it was fairly inevitable that the iPod Touch would get hacked to bits.

The hack, by iJailBreak, basically transforms the Touch into an iPhone but without the phone bit. You can now install apps such as Google Earth and Mail on your Touch.

This is excellent for those who might want to use the Touch as a PDA device.

Engineers last week unveiled the largest wind turbines ever connected to the UK national grid: two massive generators that tower 300ft over the North Sea 15 miles from the Scottish coast.

Customers will be able to go online via their laptops, compatible mobile phones and games consoles for hours on end if they wish. The initiative goes a step further than existing services offered by some coffee shops and cafes, which provide Wi-Fi hotspots but charge users a fee.

We hope that this will be a breath of fresh air and give greater choice for Wi-Fi hotspot users who have had little choice but to pay by the month or hour to access the internet on the move." Researchers have found a way to enforce good manners on file-sharing networks by treating bandwidth as a currency.

The team has created a peer-to-peer system called Tribler in which selfless sharers earn faster upload and download speeds but leechers are penalised.

The technology is being assessed by a European broadcasting body looking at ways of piping TV across the net.

While file-sharing networks are good ways to help lots of people get hold of large files often they have far more people taking from the system than they do giving.

Peer-to-peer networks can become sluggish if too many users download content without sharing with others.

A new device that allows viewers to operate the on/off switch or change channels by simple hand gestures

Its inventors, two engineers from Wollongong University in Australia, say the new gadget incorporates a camera that recognises hand signals and translates them into electronic commands for the TV and other audiovisual equipment.

Displaying a clenched fist means start, an outstretched hand with closed fingers means power on, a thumbs-up sign means volume up and a sideways victory sign means change channel.

Car manufacturers around the world are working on vehicle to vehicle technologies to help make driving safer. How will they work? And what difference will the technology make to our experiences on roads?

The near-collision warning is a demonstration of technology that is expected to be rolled out to all shapes and sizes of cars in the coming years.

Supercomputer steps up the pace

BlueGene/L will be succeeded by the new supercomputers

The world's fastest commercial supercomputer has been launched by computer giant IBM.

Blue Gene/P is three times more potent than the current fastest machine, BlueGene/L, also built by IBM.

Approximately 100,000 times more powerful than a PC, the first machine has been bought by the US government.

t will be installed at the Department of Energy's (DOE) Argonne National Laboratory in Illinois later this year.

Two further machines are planned for US laboratories and a fourth has been bought by the UK Science and Technology Facilities Council for its Daresbury Laboratory Cheshire.

The ultra powerful machines will be used for complex simulations to study everything from particle physics to nanotechnology.

Currently the most powerful machine is Blue Gene/L, housed at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California.

Used to ensure that the US nuclear weapons stockpile remains safe and reliable
