The Art of Healing programme, an initiative that aims to use the arts as a form of therapy to soothe patients’ mind and body and help them on their path to recovery was launched in Tan Tock Seng Hospital (TTSH) on 6 February 2006. Through the arts, the hospital is transformed to a warm, welcoming and enriching environment for patients, families, staff and visitors.

The hospital uses the arts to help distract patients from their ailments, express their feelings and reduce anxiety. Through this, the hospital aims that there will be an improvement in patients’ blood pressure and intake of pain medication, which in turn should translate to faster recovery and a shorter length of hospital stay.

Apple is making a stronger commitment to the environment, as evident in the unveiling of it's latest laptop, which is the first computer to be mercury free. It also boasts arsenic-free glass and lead-free circuit boards, among other features. Apple has been on the environmentally conscious path since 1990 from their product designs to responsible manufacturing. According to the website, Apple plans to eradicate the use of PVC, BFRs and arsenic in its products by the end of 2008.

Another plan for a large wind power generation facility has arisen and this time it’s in a state that’s never been mentioned before on Things Are Good: South Dakota, USA. South Dakota is now considering a plan for creating the world’s largest windfarm!

Clipper Windpower of Carpinteria, Calif., intends to erect enough wind turbines in several South Dakota counties to produce up to 6,000 megawatts of electricity, said Bob Gates, the firm’s senior vice president of commercial operations.

That would be eight times larger than the biggest wind farm in the world, a 735-megawatt FPL Energy facility with 421 turbines stretching across three Texas counties.

An Australian industrial designer, Paul Charlwood, has decided that disposable design is a waste. We’ve talked about consumerism here before and how it has a negative effect on the environment, but Charlwood wants to change our mind on that matter by encouraging consumerism to be something that can last.

Once Charlwood turned his mind to sustainability it meant reassessing his design philosophies. He decided he no longer wanted to design throwaway products, which led to him embracing “classic design” - products that you don’t need to, or want to, discard.

Charlwood’s conversion to environmentalism has coincided with what he sees as a “second wave” of environmentalism.

I love how algae can be used for almost anything. If the future is covered in algae, well, I’ll be the first to say that that’s a good thing.

Inhabitat has a post about how algae is being converted into crude biofuel.

The scientists involved in the LiveFuels project are focusing on specialized aspects of the algae-to-biocrude process. Some are breeding algae to find the best high-fat strains, others are refining the fat and oil extraction process and others still are developing cost-effective harvesting techniques. The biggest challenge is to make algae biocrude within a fraction of the time that nature’s biomass decomposition occurs and to do it economically, for less than $60 a barrel.
