Lorryload of pigs overturns in Sligo

A lorry-load of pigs overturned close to the route of the World Rally Championships in Co Sligo today.

Some 160 pigs spilled out from the three-tier truck when it overturned on a main national road into Sligo, which is hosting the final stages of an international rally.

Gardaí, assisted by Department of Agriculture officials, scrambled to round-up the farm animals at Collooney Roundabout just 10 kilometres from the main hub of the event.

A Garda spokeswoman said two pigs were killed. The remainder were corralled and removed from the scene.

The driver of the lorry, which appeared to have toppled over as it negotiated a roundabout, was taken to hospital where his injuries were not thought to be serious.

Two cranes were brought in to lift the truck upright before it was towed away.

"It started when he fell in love with a Lexus, which was in a very distinct peacock blue," said Sir Benjamin.

"He attacked the panels so hard that the car needs a total respray. The insurers are not very happy about it.

"They've had claims for all sorts of things like lions biting people, but never have they heard of a peacock sexually attacking a car before," he added.

Sir Benjamin has offered to give away his 13th Century ancestral home to anyone distantly related to him.

I was born at the Dublin Zoo on 9 May, 2007. My wonderful keepers tell me that I am the first elephant ever born in the Republic of Ireland. My timing was perfect as I get to stomp around the new Kaziranga Forest Trail with the rest of my ‘family’ Bernhardine, Yasmin and Anak. The problem is: I still don’t have a name. Greek mastodon find 'spectacular'

The remains of a prehistoric mastodon - a mammoth-like animal - have been found in northern Greece, including intact long tusks.

should help explain why mastodons died out in Europe two to three million years ago.

The mastodon's tusks measure 5m (16.5ft) and 4m, Mr Mol told the BBC.

Mastodons are thought to have first appeared about five million years ago and became extinct in North America about 10,000 years ago - much later than in Europe.

The animals were similar to woolly mammoths, but had tusks that pointed forwards, rather than spiralling upwards. Their teeth were also different.

Various parts of the skeleton have been dug up, along with teeth.
