What have I learned? That friendship, not money, is real security. That most western poverty is of the spiritual kind. That independence is really interdependence. And that if you don't own a plasma screen TV, people think you're an extremist.

People often ask me what I miss about my old world of lucre and business. Stress. Traffic jams. Bank statements. Utility bills.

A few years back I was working in Dublin and renting a tiny flat on the South Circular Road. This was the view from my window. I knew none of my neighbours and from what I could tell this being 'flatland' they also had no involvement with each other either. All strangers living isolated lives. Looking out the window one day I not only was attracted to the simple beauty of the houses with their odd angles and shaped roofs, but the telephone pole in the middle of the yard. Reminded me of a Maypole with all the wires leaving it in the direction of the lives surrounding it. Seemed ironic and somewhat sad to me that the people in these buildings were more connected to the rest of humanity via a utility pole carrying telephone, Internet and cable TV than they were the people who lived only a few feet away from them.

These human-made, unnatural sounds invade your senses and keep silence at bay. In fact, you’ve been raised in a culture that not only eschews silence but is terrified of it. The car radio must be on, and any pause in conversation is a moment of embarrassment that most people quickly fill with chatter. For many, being alone is a nightmare, and being alone in silence is pure torture. The famous scientist Blaise Pascal observed, “All man’s miseries derive from not being able to sit quietly in a room alone.”
