Dogs have long had special standing in the medical world. Trained to see for the blind, hear for the deaf and move for the immobilized, dogs have become indispensable companions for people with disabilities.

But dogs appear to be far more than four-legged health care workers. Over the years, data on the larger role dogs play in health has trickled out from various corners of the world. One Japanese study found pet owners made 30 percent fewer visits to doctors. A Melbourne study of 6,000 people showed that owners of dogs and other pets had lower cholesterol, blood pressure and heart attack risk compared with people who didn’t have pets.

Declawing - What You Need To Know

clipper's remarks: Of all the "well-intentioned" things people do to their pets, this has always been the worst IMO. I have seen cats suffer tremendous lifelong chronic pain, after this barbaric surgery. Some even having to be put down after botched surgery. Another side effect is, that if a cat is "a scratcher", amputating their toes often turns them into biters instead. (Please don't pull all their teeth either!! *LOL*)

Anyway...the whole problem here lies not in that cats have claws, it lies in people not providing the appropriate environment for the cat . A simple scratching post and a bit of education is all you need, to have a happy healthy non-destructive cat WITH all it's toes (and teeth).

Cats live 3-dimensional lives, as apposed to dogs, who live in two. Being able to climb is essential for the well-being of a cat. Cats have toes and claws for a reason!! Please don't mutilate your pet, but get smart instead. Your cat will thank you for it, and so will I.

First, you should know that declawing is pretty much an American thing, it's something people do for their own convenience without realizing what actually happens to their beloved cat. In England declawing is termed "inhumane" and "unnecessary mutilation." I agree. In many European countries it is illegal. I applaud their attitude.

Declawing is actually an amputation of the last joint of your cat's "toes". When you envision that, it becomes clear why declawing is not a humane act.

This is not a surgery to be taken lightly.

Your cat's body is perfectly designed to give it the grace, agility and beauty that is unique to felines. Its claws are an important part of this design.

Amputating the important part of their anatomy that contains the claws drastically alters the conformation of their feet.

I have also had people tell me that their cat's personality changed after being declawed.

Will we soon be extinct?

Do you ever walk around with the vague feeling that you're going to die soon? That could be because -- according a recent study -- the Earth might be due for a catastrophic mass extinction.

Although it can't be shown as the direct cause, global warming like we're experiencing now has taken place during past mass extinctions.

The worst mass extinction found in the fossil record took place 251 million years ago, during the Permian Period at the end of the Paleozoic Era. At that time, 95 percent of all of the species on Earth met their demise

it's clear that during this same period the global temperature also rose.

why should we humans care

We (and our pets) should be okay, even if a mass extinction occurs -- right? Probably not.

clipper's remarks: Spare a thought for the animals at Christmas time too. (And better yet, send a few bucks to an animal sanctuary.)

Don't overfeed them with Christmas goodies. Don't give pets as gifts. Pets and people have to "fit" to each other. Go as a family to the sanctuary to pick the right pet that suits the lifestyle of your family (or let the pet pick you.) If your family wants a pet, wait till after Xmas, when things calm down. The stress of Christmas is not what a new pet needs. There will be many unwanted Christmas gift pets filling the sanctuaries after Xmas. Please think three times, before getting a cat or dog. They live a LONG time.

Merry Christmas to all the clipper pets out there too.

The star of Muletide: Donkey rescued from a salami factory will tread the boards...at the Royal Opera House

Bedraggled, filthy and ill, she was found wandering along the roadside.

Lady the donkey had been destined for the abattoir to be turned into salami – but had somehow managed to escape.

It culminated in her appearing as the star of a Nativity play – and she has now been signed up for the Royal Opera House.

Two-year-old Lady was discovered in an appalling state in South Wales – hooves overgrown, coat covered in lice and infested by internal parasites.

Although details of her escape are not known, she is thought to have made a bid for freedom seconds before being loaded on to a German cargo ship.

I’m tired of hearing “No!”

I think that’s the only word the Big Owner knows.

When I sharpen my claws on the couch. “No!”

When I attack his feet when he moves them on the bed. “No!”

When I am on the kitchen counter. “No!”

When I am tearing up his morning newspaper as he tries to read it. “No!”

When I am getting tangled in his feet trying to get him to feed me. “No!”

When he looks at the cat food bill. “No!”

When I drool on his chest while he’s petting me. “No!”

When I shed hairs on the clothes he just paid to have dry-cleaned. “No!”

When I snag a claw on his sweater and start the unraveling that will last all winter. “No!”

When I am in the dining room table. “No!”

When I try to sleep in his sock drawer. “No!”

When I walk under his car when he’s trying to back out. “No!”

When he opens the outside door and I steal through. “No!”

When I bring a dead mouse into the house. “No!”

When I bring a live mouse into the house. “NO!”

Makes me wonder. Is there ANYTHING he’ll ever say ‘yes’ to?

So if your cat became a "cat who lunched" or something and the conversation came around to their humans, how would your cat describe you?

Sophie: I dunno, tall.

Poppy: Warm armpits. Moves too much though. She's a bed hog.

Wants to cuddle me when I want to sleep. Won't stand still when I want to use her as scratchpost.

Monkey: Ahhh I don't like her, sure she helped me through my childbirth and she takes good care of the kittens but, she never let's us do it anymore.

Finnegan: "I am a blind cat, but I can still "see" that she is a very good person... that is, when she is not running around like a crazy woman .....!!"

Paco: "ALL I want is ONE freaking cat treat ....! What is wrong with you, lady...? Is food so scarce lately..?"

If I need them to come, all I have to do is play Pink Floyd - High Hopes. They're all here in a flash. Bells are a good sound for conditioning cats, coz it travels far.

Riley loves food.

We have this dog shaped container for treats that when you open the head, it will either sing, "Who let the dogs out? woof! woof! woof! woof!"

when she hears it, she comes running...every single time.

it has basically become the come command. One day, Riley, being the minpin that she is, decided to explore the outside world...

Gina was so worried that she would be hit by a car that she immediately went into survival mode and didn't think twice about running outside and frantically singing

imagine a little brown dog escaping the yard and then 3 adults running out one by one singing loudly, "Who let the dogs out? woof! woof! woof!..." and then seeing the dog come running back for her treat!

October 12, 2007 when animal control workers seized dozens of pets from housing projects in the town of Barceloneta, Puerto Rico. They told pet owners their dogs and cats were to be taken to a shelter. But instead, they hurled them from a bridge to their deaths.

“The taking of over 80 innocent pets’ lives in such a barbaric manner and the violation of civil rights against the poor-- breaking into their homes as if it were a drug raid; and, especially that this atrocity was government sanctioned makes this case beyond outrageous!”

I thought of how those poor innocent pets felt when they were viciously taken away from their families

Puerto Rican authorities have started an investigation into the mass killing of dogs and cats.

Immunize Your Children Or Go To Jail

clipper's remarks: I am adamantly opposed to any sort of mandatory, forced or imposed vaccination programs. I do NOT trust the pharmaceutical companies. Last time I was vaccinated, I was deathly sick for three days and thought I was going to die! Despite this, blood tests showed that I still hadn't developed the necessary amount of antibodies for the vaccine to be effective and I was advised to have the vaccination again! Yeah right!! In your dreams Dr. Death! *LOL* One of my cats is also extremely sensitive to vaccinations and gets SO sick too. Vaccinations and medicine are NOT one size fits all. No-one should be forced to have anything injected into them or their children (or pets.) I'll take my chances against the bugs any day, rather than being bumped off by the vaccination itself! If this were imposed upon me or my kids (or pets), they would be home schooled instantly or we would leave the state. End of story.
