In 2005 reports began to come in that hundreds, possibly thousands, of toads were exploding in Hamburg

it was strongly suspected that the frogs, once attacked by birds, were puffing up to defend themselves - only to burst

Another theory is that the toads were self-selecting to reduce their own populations or

some kind of virus. At least one species of ant is known to use self-detonation as a defense mechanism, explosively spraying its opponents with poison as it violently perishes.

Now, humans exploding is a relatively rare phenomenon but it has been known to happen.

Evolution of Life was Stalled for 2 Billion Years

A coherent picture of the environmental conditions that led to the evolution of animal life is finally emerging. Scientists say that oxygen deficiency and a lack of the heavy metal molybdenum in the oceans had blocked the evolution of life on Earth for nearly two billion years.

The molybdenum record shows that the second step occurred around 600 million years ago, when the entire ocean became oxygenated, which enabled the rise of multi-cellular life called eukaryotes -- the category that includes plants, humans and other complex creatures.

"These molybdenum depletions may have retarded the development of complex life such as animals for almost two billion years of Earth history," said Timothy Lyons, a professor at University of California Riverside. "The amount of molybdenum in the ocean probably played a major role in the development of life."

Molybdenum levels are also a reliable indicator of oxygen levels in ocean chemistry.

Mild winter convinces wildlife that spring has sprung

The daffodils are blooming early at Kew Gardens

Nature is so confused by the mild winter conditions that many species of animal and plant are convinced that spring has arrived.

Birds have started nesting, bumblebees are finding a supply of snowdrops and daffodils, and tadpoles have been spotted in ponds.

hazel catkins appearing as early as December 9, snowdrops in flower on December 10 and 47 sightings of seven-spotted ladybirds last month.

Butterflies making unseasonable appearances

Collared doves and rooks are among the birds most confused by the mild weather, which has tempted scores of pairs to start nesting. Robins and bluetits have also been caught out.

Woodland Trust have reported hundreds of sightings of animals and plants that are behaving as if spring were here. The early start for many species is in line with the trend over the past decade and is attributed to the effects of global warming.

FDA: Cloned Animals Safe for Consumption

WASHINGTON -

Meat and milk from cloned animals is as safe as that from their counterparts bred the old-fashioned way, the Food and Drug Administration said Tuesday - but sales still won't begin right away.

The decision removes the last big U.S. regulatory hurdle to marketing products from cloned livestock, and puts the FDA in concert with recent safety assessments from European food regulators and several other nations.

"Meat and milk from cattle, swine and goat clones are as safe as food we eat every day," said Dr. Stephen Sundloff, FDA's food safety chief.

But the government has asked animal cloning companies to continue a voluntary moratorium on sales for a little longer - not for safety reasons, but marketing ones.

Where I live, there used to be flocks of thousands of sparrows every year. Not any more. Now, I'm lucky to see flocks of a hundred, usually the groups are in their tens only. The frog song has disappeared here too. It's so sad. Too quiet.

Was Jesus born in a cave?

Jesus Christ, son of Mary, was born in a cave, not in a wooden stable. Caves were used to keep animals in because of the intense heat. A large church is now built over the cave, and people can go down inside the cave. The carpenters of Jesus' day were really stone cutters. Wood was not used as widely as it is today. So whenever you see a Christmas nativity scene with a wooden stable -- that's the "American" version, not the Biblical one.

Zoos in Canada only have regulations for native animals such as bears or coyotes. Keepers have no rules for exotic animals, including lions, tigers or kangaroos.

Animal cruelty-accused cites man's 'dominion'

A CANADIAN zookeeper who imprisoned a kangaroo in a tiny cage has drawn on the Bible to declare her own "dominion over animals" in court.

Shirley McElroy, owner of Ontario's Lickety-Split Ranch and Zoo, outraged Australia when The Daily Telegraph exposed images of Tyson, a red kangaroo penned in a barren shed too small to jump in.

McElroy faced court in London, Ontario yesterday charged with possession of native wildlife without a licence and faces a $CAN25,000 ($29,000) fine if convicted.

In her defence she attempted to turn the dock into a pulpit.

Representing herself in court, McElroy read Genesis 1:26, which refers to humans ruling over all animals, from a paperback edition of The Bible.

Justice Helen Gale told McElroy: "This court is not a podium."

McElroy soldiered on, saying the court wanted her to give up her "God-given right".

"With the greatest respect to Ms McElroy, this is not the appropriate forum for scripture to be recited."

Bush Should Pardon All of the Turkeys

These people should be arrested. They would be if the turkeys were dogs or cats. Too bad our animal protection laws make about as much sense as fighting a war against a country that doesn’t have an army. Even though 98 percent of the land animals Americans eat are turkeys and chickens, the federal Humane Methods of Slaughter Act specifically excludes birds from protection. I’m not kidding.

Butterball employees, taking a page out of the Abu Ghraib handbook, laughed while they kicked, punched, stomped, and even sexually assaulted turkeys.

The Butterball plant in the video slaughters about 50,000 turkeys every day. Fifty million turkey corpses will go into American ovens this Thanksgiving. More than 9 billion turkeys and chickens are killed in the U.S. each year. But not one of them is guaranteed a painless death

I ask you to do what I’m going to do and pardon a turkey this Thanksgiving.

October 12, 2007 when animal control workers seized dozens of pets from housing projects in the town of Barceloneta, Puerto Rico. They told pet owners their dogs and cats were to be taken to a shelter. But instead, they hurled them from a bridge to their deaths.

“The taking of over 80 innocent pets’ lives in such a barbaric manner and the violation of civil rights against the poor-- breaking into their homes as if it were a drug raid; and, especially that this atrocity was government sanctioned makes this case beyond outrageous!”

I thought of how those poor innocent pets felt when they were viciously taken away from their families

Stowaway piglet survives toilet roll ordeal

LONDON (Reuters) - A piglet nicknamed Andrex is recovering after being found in the back of a truck full of toilet paper at a supermarket.

The animal, thought to be two or three weeks old, was discovered in a delivery at a Tesco store in Ilkeston, Derbyshire.

Staff wrapped the piglet in a duvet and called the RSPCA, a Tesco spokesman said Tuesday.

He was taken to an animal shelter in Radcliffe-on-Trent, outside Nottingham, suffering from cuts and bruises to his snout.

"We will now care for him until he is fit enough to be found a permanent home," said Ella Herring, the shelter's deputy manager.

Tesco said store workers were unsure of how the piglet came to be on the truck, but thought it may have been a prank.

Staff are used to dealing with the unexpected, but little Andrex's arrival was a shock," a Tesco spokesman said. "They took it in their stride, wrapping him up straightaway in a duvet in the manager's office and calling the RSPCA

Number of accidents involving anthrax, other toxins increasing, review finds

WASHINGTON - American laboratories handling the world’s deadliest germs and toxins have experienced more than 100 accidents and missing shipments since 2003, and the number is increasing steadily as more labs across the country are approved to do the work.

No one died, and regulators said the public was never at risk during these incidents. But the documented cases reflect poorly on procedures and oversight at high-security labs, some of which work with organisms and poisons so dangerous that illnesses they cause have no cure. In some cases, labs have failed to report accidents as required by law.

The mishaps include workers bitten or scratched by infected animals, skin cuts, needle sticks and more

They describe accidents involving anthrax, bird flu virus, monkeypox and plague-causing bacteria at 44 labs in 24 states. More than two-dozen incidents were still under investigation.
