NEW YORK - Girlfriend getaways are growing in popularity, according to a survey released Thursday.

The study conducted by the AAA auto and travel association found that 24 percent of American women have taken a girlfriend getaway in the past three years and nearly 40 percent plan one in the next three years.

The survey of 1,500 women found that the most common destination was the beach (66 percent) followed by a spa (63 percent) or a shopping site (55 percent) or a cruise (51 percent).

Most indicated, however, that the destination was incidental to the purpose of the trip —spending quality time with female friends and family members, the study found.

It also found that while about 7 percent of the girls-only trips were related to a planned wedding, and 9 percent to a birthday, most didn't have a specific peg. In more than a third of cases, respondents said they wanted to reconnect with friends or get together for no special reason.

Conan, a 150 lb Mastiff belonging to Liam and Amanda O’Hara, was shot in the chest with a razor tipped hunting arrow at his home in the 4200 block of Second Avenue Northeast, Wellington, WA on Tuesday night/Wednesday morning. There were hopes that Conan, would survive, but sadly he didn’t make it.

“He had some internal bleeding in his lungs, and he couldn’t make it,” said Amanda O’Hara. “This was an intentionally cruel act toward our dog. It’s horrible.”

The American writer Maya Angelou wrote a poem which contains the lines: "Nobody, but nobody/Can make it out here alone."

If she is right, it's a frightening truth. For millions of people feel they have no option but to struggle on alone. They do not choose solitude like the hermit, recluse or artist. Theirs is the punishment of solitary confinement which is the prisoner's torture.

The irony is that in this world of frenetic communication, more and more people feel there is nobody who wants to communicate with them at a meaningful level.

think of the electronic ether, zinging with messages and junk mail, billions upon billions of words and symbols, keeping people in touch as well as peddling everything from shoes to sex.

What does it add up to? What use are the multi-layers of "communication" when so many people have no feeling of belonging? We are deceived by communication. Mistaking it for community, we pay the price each day in a downward spiral of mental health.

Watchdog Group Names Top Corporate Abusers

NEW YORK - A corporate watchdog group has started a nationwide voting campaign to name and shame companies that run afoul of economic and environmental laws.

Opening the polls on its Web site this week, the Boston-based Corporate Accountability International (CAI) organization urged consumers to select the “most abusive” corporations of 2008.

“We believe all of the nominees deserve this infamous dishonor,” said CAI executive director Kelle Louaillier, “But we look forward to seeing which corporations voters select as the worst of the worst,”

The group’s nominees for its annual “Corporate Hall of Shame” elections include big names like Archer Daniels Midland (ADM), Toyota, Countrywide, Mattel, Nestle, Blackwater, Wal-Mart, and Wendy’s.

Louaillier describes the “Hall of Shame” vote as an effective way to hold corporations accountable

According to CAI, ADM’s fiscal year 2007 revenues exceeded $44 billion, with its CEO, Patricia A. Woertz, raking in a salary of $2.7 million.

Many men believe the world is now dominated by women and that they have lost their role in society, fuelling feelings of depression and being undervalued.

Asked what it meant to be a man in the 21st century, more than half thought society was turning them into "waxed and coiffed metrosexuals", and 52 per cent say they had to live according to women's rules.

Men said they "felt handcuffed" by political correctness - only 33 per cent felt they could speak freely and say what they thought, whereas two thirds found it safer and to conceal their opinions.

But four out of 10 are frightened of heights and spiders while a third are frightened of bossy women.

The moving story of one of the last survivors of the Titanic can be revealed for the first time after touching letters and documents were discovered after her death.

For 94 years Lillian Asplund refused to speak about the tragedy that claimed the lives of her father and three brothers.

Instead, the spinster kept the final moments of her family locked in her memory and the poignant possessions of her father Carl hidden in a shoebox in her bureau.

It was only after her death aged 99 the box was found along with the collection of Titanic-related items that, pieced together, tell the tragic story of the family's demise.

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - The moon could become a final resting place for some of mankind thanks to a commercial service that hopes to send human ashes to the lunar surface on robotic landers, the company said on Thursday.

The cost starts at $10,000 for a small quantity of ashes from one person.

Celestis president Charles Chafer said his company reached an agreement with Odyssey Moon Ltd. and Astrobotic Technology Inc., to attach capsules containing cremated remains onto robotic lunar landers.

Chafer said he expected about 1,000 capsules containing ashes to be launched on the first lunar mission, expected in late 2009 or early 2010, and about 5,000 on future flights.

"The moon is a special place," Chafer said, adding a half dozen people had already signed up for the service.

"For many people, it would be a romantic notion to look up into the sky and see the moon and know that your mom or dad or loved one is up there memorialized."

British youth are violent, drunken and out of control, a leading American magazine concludes today.

The front cover of renowned publication Time Magazine depicts a young man in a "hoodie" with mugshots of others across a Union Jack.

Its headline reads: "Unhappy, Unloved and Out of Control - An epidemic of violence, crime and drunkenness has made Britain scared of its young."

It also pours scorn upon the parenting abilities of the British, claiming they do not spend enough time with their children and cannot cope.

The magazine criticises our class-riven society, education system and binge-drinking culture.

"The boys and girls who casually pick fights, have sex and keep the emergency services fully occupied are often fuelled by cheap booze."

The article expresses particular concern at Britain's binge-drinking culture.
