clipper's remarks: This story is unbelievably astounding, to think the chickenhawks ordered up a war, an unnecessary war, sent our young, barely trained, people into it. Then, after much wartime physical and mental weariness, those who are still in one piece come home and take their place back into a society, they now are not familiar with. It's comparable to training dogs to a killing madness and after they've outworn their murderous usefulness, putting them up for adoption by unsuspecting families with children.

Report: 121 veterans linked to killings

At least 121 Iraq and Afghanistan war veterans have committed a killing or been charged in one in the United States after returning from combat, The New York Times reported Sunday.

The newspaper said it also logged 349 homicides involving all active-duty military personnel and new veterans in the six years since military action began in Afghanistan, and later Iraq. That represents an 89-percent increase over the previous six-year period, the newspaper said.

About three-quarters of those homicides involved Iraq and Afghanistan war veterans,

Report: 39 secretly imprisoned by U.S.

President Bush acknowledged the existence of secret detention centers in September 2006, but said that the prisons were then empty.

Bush said 14 terrorism suspects that the CIA had been holding, including a mastermind of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on the United States, had been transferred to military custody at Guantanamo Bay for trials.

Fitzgerald said she wasn't convinced that the sites were ever emptied,

We wanted (the detainees') names in the public eye because of the impression that this is over, this is finished, and they're not doing this anymore," Fitzgerald said. "That's clearly not the case."

The report says they were handed to U.S. authorities and have not been heard from since.

clipper's remarks: I listened to this npr radio broadcast of 3 mothers who had lost sons in Iraq. As a mother myself, my empathy for these women and their loss was intense... I read and hear of the numbers dead each day but the impact is minimal, a quick tear and a feeling of helplessness is scarcely the grip I get when something is so redundant. Until you hear from the actual true sufferers of this war, THE MOTHERS, THE FAMILIES, you can't imagine the cost these people actualize. Please listen to their stories of pain. Especially, Elaine Johnson, one brave mother who dared to call Bush on his lack of knowledge and sensitivity about waging this disgusting collide with reality. Be prepared to undergo the painful tears of sorrow and grief in identification to those unfortunates caught up in a game of chess by the neoconservative think-tanker's who have only power and approval to lose. In an online statement, Sheehan says she has come to the "devastating" conclusion that her son did, indeed, die for nothing. Her post-activist plans are to reclaim her health and take care of her surviving children.

But other mothers who have lost children in Iraq are still speaking out against the war. Elaine Johnson's son, Army Spc. Darius Jennings, was one of 17 U.S. troops killed when a helicopter was shot down by Iraqi insurgents Nov. 2, 2004. Soon after, Johnson, a resident of South Carolina, decided to channel the pain of her loss like Cindy Sheehan had, by becoming an outspoken opponent of the war.

Cindy Sheehan is going

out the way she came in, with a symbolic gesture widely covered by the mainstream media. A Google News search of her name showed more than 500 articles about her announcement yesterday that she was resigning as the “face” of the anti-war movement.

Much less a typical press release and more a zigzagging screed, her letter of resignation, which she sent to Daily Kos, is titled “Good Riddance Attention Whore.”

Sheehan’s anti-war campaign, which was sparked by the April 4, 2004, death of her son Casey in Sadr City, Iraq, has been defined by emotion, which is in full display in her farewell posting: “The most devastating conclusion that I reached this morning was that Casey did indeed die for nothing.”

I have endured a lot of smear and hatred since Casey was killed and especially since I became the so-called "Face" of the American anti-war movement. Especially since I renounced any tie I have remaining with the Democratic Party, I have been further trashed on such "liberal blogs" as the Democratic Underground. Being called an "attention whore" and being told "good riddance" are some of the more milder rebukes.

I have come to some heartbreaking conclusions this Memorial Day Morning. These are not spur of the moment reflections, but things I have been meditating on for about a year now. The conclusions that I have slowly and very reluctantly come to are very heartbreaking to me.

Military Mom Cindy Sheehan Resigns from Anti-War Movement

On the day that memorializes U.S. soldiers who died in service of our country, Cindy Sheehan, one of America's most famous Iraq War military mothers, made the difficult decision to step away from the anti-war movement, and to return home.

Cindy painfully writes at DailyKos:

"Our brave young men and women in Iraq have been abandoned there indefinitely by their cowardly leaders who move them around like pawns on a chessboard of destruction and the people of Iraq have been doomed to death and fates worse than death by people worried more about elections than people...

"I am going to take whatever I have left and go home. I am going to go home and be a mother to my surviving children and try to regain some of what I have lost...

You can go to its website and take a little tour in sketch form, a blast-resistant spin, through its Bush-inspired wonder, its particular colossus of the modern world. Imagine this: At $592 million, its proudest boast is that, unlike almost any other American construction project in that country, it is coming in on budget and on time. Of course, with a 30% increase in staffing size since Congress approved the project two years ago, it is now estimated that being "represented" in Baghdad will cost a staggering $1.2 billion per year. No wonder, with a crew of perhaps 1,000 officials assigned to it and a supporting staff (from food service workers to Marine guards and private security contractors) of several thousand more.

YOUNG DEAD

The phenomenon is growing because the war dead are young - as of March 24, more than three-fourths of those killed in Iraq were 30 years old or younger - and comfortable putting personal information online.

"A lot of the younger Soldiers, especially young enlisted Soldiers, have a MySpace page," says Army Sgt. Tom Day, one of the living who has served three tours in Iraq and is currently deployed to Kuwait. MySpace has more than 100 million registered users.

The result has been pictures of war that are "much more personal and much more public," said the History Project's Patrick. "That's a function of technology."

The number of Soldiers who leave behind online profiles could drop after the Pentagon's recent announcement that servicemembers deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan won't be able to access MySpace and other social Web sites from Defense Department computers. But the new rules don't affect commercial or private computers
