Republicans Try to Force Debate on Rep. Kucinich's Effort to Impeach Vice President Cheney

House Democrats on Tuesday narrowly managed to avert a bruising debate on a proposal to impeach Dick Cheney after Republicans, in a surprise maneuver, voted in favor of taking up the measure.

Republicans, changing course midway through a vote, tried to force Democrats into a debate on the resolution sponsored by longshot presidential candidate Dennis Kucinich.

Finally we come to the One Law of Open Space. It is a law only in the sense that all participants must observe it or the process will not work. We call it the Law of Two Feet. Briefly stated, this law says that every individual has two feet, and must be prepared to use them. Responsibility for a successful outcome in any Open Space Event resides with exactly one person -- each participant. Individuals can make a difference and must make a difference. If that is not true in a given situation, they, and they alone, must take responsibility to use their two feet, and move to a new place where they can make a difference. This departure need not be made in anger or hostility, but only after honoring the people involved and the space they occupy. By word or gesture, indicate that you have nothing further to contribute, wish them well, and go and do something useful.

Dear Nancy:

It is so good to hear from you. We've been calling you with an important message, but a lot of us cannot get through to you because we are not in your district. But, at least you took the time to write.

I'm afraid that I cannot keep enabling the enablers of the * Administration with a financial contribution at this time. I was so pleased to contribute during the 2006 election cycle because I thought there would be noticeable change in America. We are still occupying Iraq. We are still spied on by our government. Habeas Corpus is suspended. Detention centers are being built. The president continues to erode the Constitution, you know, what he called that "GD piece of paper" with executive orders to do such things as seizing a person's finances for protesting Iraq.

Shortly after 9pm, Senate leadership took the stage. Reid spoke first, followed by Speaker Pelosi. She asked the crowd, “Are we united in speaking out against Republican obstructionism?” The crowd responded with a roar!

Pelosi was followed by Sen. Durbin — then Rep. John Lewis and then Schumer, then Pat Murphy, then Patty Murray — who led the crowd in a “Wake up” call chant.

From the Senate, we have in attendance the following: Reid, Reed, Durbin, Levin, Schumer, Pelosi, Leahy, Klobuchar, McCaskill, Murray, Akaka, Casey, Launtenberg, and Harkin.

During the middle of the program, the House emptied out and flooded the rally.

Keep Loving That Gridlock

After the November 2006 elections I was hoping for this and said so in one of my columns. Sure enough, there is gridlock in the air in Washington, helping with the task of slowing down the rampage of Democrats to loot us of all our wealth so they can redistribute it to their heart's content. Yes, going after Attorney General Gonzales has its benefits, as does the bill passed by both the House and the Senate, curtailing the war in Iraq, one President Bush is sure to veto. All this acrimony is to the good!

Let me just say that I am all for pulling out of Iraq. It's been bad war, if any of them can be welcomed, and it is time to admit it and let go of it. America really has no business being in Iraq-there has never been any credible evidence that that country poses a serious threat to us, which is the only justification for war in a free society. (Remember, "governments are instituted" to "secure [our] rights," not to go on military adventures around the globe!)

1. Perhaps Reed doesn't realize it, but there is an even more pressing issue

The power of Congress has been unilaterally removed by this administration

The executive branch has ORDERED people NOT to testify before Congress. They have ordered documents that Congress has requested NOT to be given to them.

May Pelosi and Reed should realize that the Institution they call Congress, and the Constitution are being attacked by the executive branch. At the minimum it is contempt of congress, at the maximum, Congress has been invalidated.

Pelosi, you had better not allow this to stand. republicans in Congress should be concerned as well

Forcing his Republican colleagues to put up or shut up on the notion of an up-or-down vote, Senate Majority leader Harry Reid (D-NV) just moments ago announced that he will immediately file a cloture motion on the Reed-Levin troop redeployment bill and, if Republicans follow through with a filibuster, will place the Senate in a prolonged all-night session Tuesday to force a true continuation of debate.

"Now, Republicans are using a filibuster to block us from even voting on an amendment that could bring the war to a responsible end," said Reid. "They are protecting the President rather than protecting our troops. They are denying us an up or down – yes or no – vote on the most important issue our country faces."

The Nation -- Four more members of the U.S. House signed on this week as cosponsors of H. Res. 333, the measure that outlines articles of impeachment against Vice President Dick Cheney for actively and systematically seeking to deceive citizens and Congress about an alleged threat of Iraqi weapons of mass destruction and an alleged relationship between Iraq and al Qaeda and for openly threatening aggression against Iran.

Congressman Bob Filner, the chair of the House Committee on Veterans' Affairs, added his name, along with another veteran Democratic representative from California, Sam Farr.

The additional cosponsorships from Washington Democrat Jim McDermott, a Vietnam-era veteran who has been one of the House's sharpest critics of the war in Iraq, and Virginia Democrat James Moran bring the number of supporters for the articles to 14, including sponsor Dennis Kucinich, D-Ohio.
