A Virginia Tech student has created an LED floor lamp that is powered by gravity, using a weight slide similar to the concept of a grandfather clock. The lamp puts out the equivalent of a 40-Watt bulb, and lasts four hours per cycle. The mechanism is expected to last 200 years.

Clay Moulton of Springfield, Va., who received his Master of Science in Architecture with a concentration in industrial design from the College of Architecture and Urban Studies in 2007, created the lamp as a part of this master’s thesis. The LED lamp, named Gravia, has just won second place in the Greener Gadgets Design Competition as part of the Greener Gadgets Conference in New York City

Moulton estimates that Gravia’s mechanisms will last more than 200 years, if used eight hours a day, 365 days a year. “The LEDs, which are generally considered long-life devices, become short-life components in comparison to the drive mechanisms,” he said.

It’s very special feeling to listen to music on a rainy day. Rain, it makes people sentimental. Especially listening to music under an umbrella with a person you love gives us big emotion. The dome structure of umbrellas allows sound to be more concentrated, and a handle of umbrella could be a great part for controlling the music. Sometimes people spin an umbrella unconsciously. If you spin this umbrella to left or right, the music will move forward (right turn) or reverse (left turn). Unfortunately even though it is not raining, you still can use this umbrella. You can just put it in the corner of your living room with cradle, and then also you can enjoy the music from speakers of cradle.

If you spin this umbrella to left or right,
the music will move forward (right turn) or reverse (left turn).
If you open or close it, the power will be turn on(opened) or off(closed)

This is one of the most gorgeous implementations of matchbooks i’ve seen in some time. Interactions from shaking the match out (reminiscent of some of those toothpick dispensers), the satisfaction of pulling it out and having it light, being able to see all the matches inside yet untouchable…
