allows you to connect lots of low-powered thin client

on the server, and accept input and display their output

With routine comes speed, and learning with speed delivers high performance. The results of methods such as peer assists (learning before doing), action reviews (learning while doing), and after action reviews (learning after doing) are well-known. If you are not applying those techniques in your projects and teams, now is a good time to start. But fast learning is not just something you do with your team. You can apply those tools to yourself every day to accelerate your own pace of learning and performing.

Tags: learning

<clipSource>http://www.kmworld.com/Articles/ReadArticle.aspx?ArticleID=15628</clipSource>

A Field Guide to Critical Thinking - 6 Rules

clipped by: Djiezes

Clip Source: www.csicop.org

A Field Guide to Critical Thinking

The six rules of evidential reasoning are my own distillation and
simplification of the scientific method. To make it easier for
students to remember these half-dozen guidelines, I've coined an
acronym for them: Ignoring the vowels, the letters in the word
"FiLCHeRS" stand for the rules of Falsifiability,
Logic, Comprehensiveness, Honesty, Replicability, and
Sufficiency. Apply these six rules to the evidence offered for any
claim, I tell my students, and no one will ever be able to sneak up on
you and steal your belief. You'll be filch-proof.

Falsifiability

It must be possible to conceive of evidence that would prove
the claim false.

Logic

Any argument offered as evidence in support of any claim must
be sound.

Comprehensiveness

The evidence offered in support of any claim must be
exhaustive -- that is all of the available evidence must be
considered.

Honesty

The evidence offered in support of any claim must be evaluated

result, or if the evidence offered in support of any claim could
logically be explained as coincidental, then it is necessary for the
evidence to be repeated in subsequent experiments or
trials.

Sufficiency

The evidence offered in support of any claim must be adequate

the burden of proof for any claim rests on the claimant,

extraordinary claims demand extraordinary evidence, and

evidence based upon authority and/or testimony is always

It is written in Java, and is thus portable to many platforms. WebScarab has several modes of operation, implemented by a number of plugins. In its most common usage, WebScarab operates as an intercepting proxy, allowing the operator to review and modify requests created by the browser before they are sent to the server, and to review and modify responses returned from the server before they are received by the browser. WebScarab is able to intercept both HTTP and HTTPS communication. The operator can also review the conversations (requests and responses) that have passed through WebScarab.

After reading the article in the latest QST (April 2003) on the Hinternet, I started
a quest to find out how one attaches an external antenna to a WiFi device.
First thing I noticed is that there seemed to be no way to hook antennas
to a PCMCIA card, and lots of the Orinoco access points etc, seemed to have
no antennas at all, and no sign of a connector.

I use Orinoco stuff because at UHM that is the card they supported
when they started Wi-Fi experiments on campus. I tried a LinkSys card,
and it was a nightmare. I gave it to a person who had several ICS
students fiddle with it and after a lot of aggravation, they also gave
up. It took the big dive into the dumpster quite some time ago. No one
ever did get it to configure, or recognize signal, much less login.

The key for a lot of Wi-Fi is that the PCMCIA cards are the radios.
They apparently have the modems and the transceivers for 2.4 GHz, or if
802.11a, for 5 GHz. The g is some kind of new standard. So cards are
typically 802.11b, 802.11a, 802.11g or a combination. In the Orinoco
line, the silver cards have 40 bit encryption and the
gold cards have 128 bit encryption.

From what I understand, Wi-Fi is
802.11 a/b/g and Bluetooth is something else. Airport is a Mac version
and is related to Wi-Fi. It is supposed to be interoperable with Wi-Fi. The
new standard 802.11g is called Airport Extreme and the port they are selling
even has an external antenna connector. Two external antennas, a flat
panel and a vertical are available for order for this Airport Extreme hub.
The 802.11b operates in our 2.4 GHz band and
I believe the 802.11a operates up at 5 GHz. I think 802.11g is another
protocol for 2.4 GHz.

Tags: orinoco, wifi, antenna

<clipSource>http://www.chem.hawaii.edu/uham/hnet.html</clipSource>

YoLinux: Using Linux iptables and ipchains for internet gateway

clipped by: theDaryl

Clip Source: www.yolinux.com

YoLinux: Using Linux iptables or ipchains to set up an internet gateway / firewall / router for home or office

Use Linux ipchains / iptables and IP forwarding to configure Linux as a
    firewall and router.
This is the method covered in this tutorial.

to run ipchains / iptables and IP masquerading.

This tutorial will cover using a linux computer as a gateway between a private
network and the internet.
Any internet connection whether it be a dial-up PPP, DSL, cable modem or a
T1 line can be used.
In the case of most dial-up PPP connections and cable modem connections, only
a single IP address is issued allowing only one computer to connect to the
internet at a time.
Using Linux and iptables / ipchains one can configure a gateway which will allow
all computers on a private network to connect to the internet via the gateway
and one external IP address,
using a technology called "Network Address Translation" (NAT) or masquerading and private subnets.
Iptables/ipchains can also be configured so that the Linux computer acts as a
firewall, providing protection to the internal network.
