A conversation I often have with fellow internet marketers who are not in Twitter is: is it worth the time investment from a financial perspective? Usually I am told that this is obviously not the case, and thus, disregarding the fact it’s a good way to befriend people, it’s not a good investment in terms of time and money.

Although I know some people who have been monetizing Twitter rather successfully, my answer is: yes, this is right in the short term, but no in the longer term. Yes, I’ve made some money using Twitter with SponsoredTweets and Ad.Ly, as well as the occasional affiliate offer, but overall if one wants to monetize his time, then there are definitely easier to make money online.

<clipSource>http://www.industryreview.org/affiliate-marketing/twitter-beyond-immediate-roi</clipSource>

My ad:tech NY 2009 Experience Part 1 – Personal Perspective

clipped by: th2801

Clip Source: www.industryreview.org

My ad:tech NY 2009 Experience Part 1 – Personal Perspective

Although I was not sure I’ll be attending ad:tech NY 2009 until the last moment (because of various family and personal illnesses), I’m certainly glad I did. Overall, I can say it was a blast! Bigger than the last conference I attended, Affiliate Summit East (ASE), but somehow less overwhelming too – perhaps because there were more companies that really did not relate to anything I am doing.

After thinking about this for a while, I’ve decided to break my ad:tech summary into three separate posts. One describing my personal experiences, the other describing a few companies I got a chance to talk to, and the last describing the (few) sessions I attended. This is a good point to mention that unlike in ASE, this time I came as press.

<clipSource>http://www.industryreview.org/uncategorized/my-adtech-ny-2009-experience-part-1-personal-perspective</clipSource>

Case Study: What Happens When You Unfollow Most Of Your Followers?

clipped by: th2801

Clip Source: www.industryreview.org

Case Study: What Happens When You Unfollow Most Of Your Followers?

Unsurprisingly, there are various approaches to follower attraction and – for lack of a better word – follower removal. Some people, and I believe these are the people Twitter originally aimed to attract, just naturally meet people. Follow those whose tweets interest them and unfollow those whose tweets do not.

Another group of people are similar to the above, but they aim to gain as many followers as possible. I admit to belonging to this group, primarily because it gives me a much greater audience to this blog as well as significantly more opportunities for interaction and meeting people (it’s also so easy so why not do it?).

A third group aims to gain as many followers as possible since every follower is a potential buyer. If you have 50,000 followers, and you try and sell something, even if 0.1% on average buy, then it’s still 50 people – which is a lot if you compare it to other ad models (i.e. PPC).

Tags: twitter, unfollow

<clipSource>http://www.industryreview.org/social-media/case-study-what-happens-when-you-unfollow-most-of-your-followers</clipSource>

What Happens When You Starting Having Many Followers (or: The Twitter Milestones)

clipped by: th2801

Clip Source: www.industryreview.org

What Happens When You Starting Having Many Followers (or: The Twitter Milestones)

After using Twitter very heavily for – what – 3 months now? I’ve noticed that there are certain mandatory milestones people who use Twitter pass through.

The first occurs somewhere around 150 followers/followees. You realize there’s no way you could keep track of all the conversations since the web interface isn’t really designed for this. At this point people either limit the number of people they follow (too many conversations going on), start using specialized software

(such as TweetDeck) or just give up and return to Facebook saying that Twitter sucks and they don’t see the point (in fact, I’ve dedicated an entire post to this, Explaining Twitter to Facebook Users).

Tags: twitter

<clipSource>http://www.industryreview.org/search-engines/what-happens-when-you-starting-having-many-followers-or-the-twitter-milestones</clipSource>

My Twitter Pet Peeves

clipped by: th2801

Clip Source: www.industryreview.org

My Twitter Pet Peeves

After you’ve used social media sites for a while, you start finding common patterns, specifically, annoying patterns. Although each one of us is annoyed by different things, usually there are commonalities that annoy each and every one of us. I’ve decided to create my own list of pet peeves and share it with you.

Here’s my list of Pet Peeves. Feel free to add some of your own.

Many users have some kind of auto-follow script – so when you follow them, you get a direct message (DM) “Thank you for following me, blah blah blah”. That’s fine with me. However, the thing that irritates me the most (more than spammers!) are the users that send you the DM – but don’t follow you back, so you can’t respond! It goes along the lines of “Thank you for following me. Here’s my blog. Can you tell me about yourself?” (remember, all automated). But I can’t answer! Because you haven’t followed me! I’d much rather not get anything, and not be followed than get a message I can’t reply to!

Tags: twitter pet peeves

<clipSource>http://www.industryreview.org/?p=606&preview=true</clipSource>

Joseph Schlessinger - Scientific Advisory Board Member

clipped by: th2801

Clip Source: people.forbes.com

(Or Even: How To Break An Addiction?)

Let’s face it. At one point or another we all found ourselves visiting a website/application much more than we wanted to. It could’ve been MSN messenger or AIM. It could’ve been Facebook. It could’ve been Twitter. It could’ve been a favorite blog. However, one day we realized that it’s becoming a detrimental habit: it’s beginning to affect our personal lives and even work. So we decided to take our distance or maybe even quit.

..and then we found out it’s not so easy..

Sounds familiar? I’m sure it does to many.

First, think about why you want to do this, and whether you truly want to. Do you have a hidden agenda, one you may not even be aware of (finding that it provides escape from real life? drawing attention to yourself? etc) then it might not work. You need to really want to do this for the process to be successful.

Tags: addiction, quitting smoking, quitting addiction

<clipSource>http://www.industryreview.org/uncategorized/how-to-break-free-from-addicting-sites-and-applications-or-even-how-to-break-an-addiction</clipSource>

The Importance of Measuring Site Rankings Accurately

clipped by: th2801

Clip Source: www.industryreview.org

The Importance of Measuring Site Rankings Accurately

I keep planning to do two big posts and yet things always keep interrupting me and I end up writing about something else. I suppose this is the good thing about having a blog: you can always talk about what you find interesting at the moment. And I still intend to write the other posts.

Some time ago I created a new site promoting a piece of clothing (I won’t say which one). Using several tools, I estimated it would have a decent amount of traffic, even if on the low side, and little competition. Furthermore, I did a quick search: monetization should be easy: both in terms of ad revenue and in terms of affiliate offers (easily found some, and good ones too). I built the site, and within 2 weeks ranked #1 on Yahoo, Bing and Google. Piece of cake.

<clipSource>http://www.industryreview.org/search-engines/the-importance-of-measuring-site-rankings-accurately</clipSource>

Joseph Schlessinger

clipped by: th2801

Clip Source: www.visualcv.com

Signal Transduction: All cells must know how to respond to their environment. They must be able to divide, grow, secrete, synthesize, degrade, differentiate, cease growth, and even die when the appropriate signal is given. This signal invariably is a molecule which binds to a receptor, typically on the cell surface. (Exceptions include light transduction in retinal cells when the signal is a photon, and lipophilic hormones which pass through the membrane.) Binding is followed by shape changes in transmembrane protein receptors which effectively transmits the signal into the cytoplasm. We will discuss three main types of signal transduction pathways:

nerve conduction, in which a presynaptic neuron releases a neurotransmitter causing a postsynaptic neuron to "fire";

apotosis or programmed cell death

signaling at the cell surface which leads to activation of kinases within the cytoplasm;

Tags: joseph schlessinger

<clipSource>http://josephschlessinger.info/second.html</clipSource>

Ashton Kutcher and the Mossad

clipped by: th2801

Clip Source: www.industryreview.org

Ashton Kutcher and the Mossad

This isn’t really a post: but why would anyone look for a search query “Ashton Kutcher and the Mossad”? Someone got to my blog by searching for this phrase. Unsurprisingly, I’m very highly ranked for this phrase (on several versions of Google, I tried), since this is such an unlikely combination and I mention both in two separate articles. But why would anyone look for that? If you know, can you please let me know? It’s nice that Google sends me the growing segment of Ashton fans that are interested in the Mossad. You’re all welcome to my blog! (no sarcasm here, I welcome all visitors).

<clipSource>http://www.industryreview.org/uncategorized/ashton-kutcher-and-the-mossad</clipSource>

The Nine Types of Affiliate Marketers

clipped by: th2801

Clip Source: www.industryreview.org

The Nine Types of Affiliate Marketers

Let’s begin. I’ll start with the lowest of the low.

The Newbie: he comes to the meetup with bewilderment in his eyes. Someone told him that he could make tons of money very quickly, and he wants to know how. Sometimes he knows a bit (”you can advertise on Google with CPO, right?”) and sometimes he knows virtually nothing. Usually despite the best efforts to help him all you can really say is “take a good class or do a lot of reading on the subject, as you need to be familiar with the basics before you can do anything productive”.

The Struggling Affiliate: usually this type knows his stuff but hasn’t had great success so far. It might be because he doesn’t know some crucial bit of information, or he simply hasn’t gotten his lucky break yet. Sometimes he admits this, sometimes by talking enough with him you’ll be able to tell.

<clipSource>http://www.industryreview.org/affiliate-marketing/the-nine-types-of-affiliate-marketers</clipSource>

The Six Major Cause of Deaths

clipped by: th2801

Clip Source: www.causeofdeath.biz

Cause of Death

If the world we live in was perfect, each of us would get to die by the time we reached old age, happy, in the comfort of our loved ones. Unfortunately, many never achieve this peaceful ending of their life. There is a simple reason for it: many of us die before our time from reasons that may or may not be under our control.

But what are the leading causes of death? There are countless reasons why people die before their time, in this site, Cause of Death: Leading Causes of Death, I will try to cover the main reasons of mortality and try and come up with ways for you to avoid them.

Microbial agents (infections, bacteria, virii)

Toxic agents – chemical, pesticides, heavy metals,

Car accidents

Abuse of alcohol

Obesity: Poor diet & lack of physical activity

Smoking and Tobacco usage

<clipSource>http://www.causeofdeath.biz/</clipSource>

Why Do People Follow Celebrities On Twitter?

clipped by: th2801

Clip Source: www.industryreview.org

Why Do People Follow Celebrities On Twitter?

As you may know, the famous blogger, John Chow, has recently unfollowed almost all of his followers (~55,000) in a single day and left only a 100. I read his post about this and all the comments (there were a lot of those). I also read several of the posts other bloggers wrote following his decision, some with very harsh criticism. I’ve met John Chow in Affiliate Summit East and spoke to him on several occasions and think he’s a very nice guy. He unfollowed me too, but then again, I can’t say we are close, so I understand his decision, and certainly don’t take it personally.

But this post is not about John Chow’s decision. Plenty of words were written about that.

<clipSource>http://www.industryreview.org/opinion/why-do-people-follow-celebrities-on-twitter</clipSource>

Interesting Statistics on Burglary and Property Crimes

clipped by: th2801

Clip Source: www.alarmsystemwireless.org

Interesting Statistics on Burglary and Property Crimes

According to the 2007 FBI Crime Statistics

Number: In 2007, 17.5 million property crimes took place.

Frequency: A burglary occurs every 14 seconds in the US. Truly scary when one thinks about it.

Time of day: The vast majority of burglaries take place during the day: between 6am and 6pm. This the time when generally people are at work, so their houses are most vulnerable. Personally speaking, my house has been broken into twice (a long time ago – before I got an alarm system), and both times occurred during midday.

Lost property: The average victim of a burglary lost property worth around $2,000. This is an important factor to take into account when purchasing a home security system.

Entry points: The burglar enters through the main entrance to the house, normally the front door, in more than a third of burglaries. This was the case for my break-ins as well.

<clipSource>http://www.alarmsystemwireless.org/articles/interesting-statistics-on-burglary-and-property-crimes</clipSource>
