Untangling the gold news

Gold as an investment, rather than adornment, is the story. More and more investors want some gold just in case Washington (and London, Brussels, Beijing and Canberra) don't get the rescue right.

Another report overnight that feeds into this trend concerns a company based in Frankfurt with a rather novel idea. Reuters says that TG-Gold-Super-Markt is planning to install 500 automatic teller machines across Germany, Switzerland and Austria that will spit out, not euro notes, but pieces of gold. Put €31 (at yesterday’s price) in the slot, and you can withdraw one tiny, 1 gram piece of gold. Each ATM, the first of which was on display at Frankfurt’s main railway station, will hold 1g, 5g and 10g gold pieces as well as Krugerrand coins. The ATMs will be able to vary the price of the gold in line with the changing gold spot figure.

A US gossip website is facing a reader backlash after trying to make fun of firefighter David Tree's rescue of Sam the koala.

In a post about Mr Tree giving his water bottle to the koala he found stumbling through burnt out bushland, TMZ.com wrote:

“After battling some of the worst wildfires ever to hit Australia, a firefighter shared his bottled water with a pampered koala on Monday. Afterwards the new friends went to Pilates and dined on sushi.”

Many readers hit out at the article, “Koala to Firefighter: I Won't Tap That!”, saying it was an unnecessary and insensitive shot at Victoria’s firefighters and the victims of the fire.

“Sorry TMZ there is no humour to find in over 200 people being killed in these fires,” Cat wrote.

Bobby wrote: “Wow classy any 9/11 jokes about towers you want to throw in? How about spousal abuse jokes - seems like the perfect time. Sometimes I have to question your hiring practices.”

BOSTON (Reuters) - Nearly four months before this week's arrest of the boss of a New York investment firm on charges of defrauding at least 1,500 investors of more than $370 million, Howard Stevens suspected the company was a sham.

Stevens went online and warned other investors. Using the nickname "hBomb," he wrote on an Internet message board that Agape World Inc, the firm run by Nicholas Cosmo who was arrested this week, "is a 100 percent fraud."

"Please DO NOT invest your money with these scam artists. Nick Cosmo should change his name to Nick Ponzi," he wrote.

The Internet is offering early warning signs, and in some cases filling a regulatory void, as the year-long recession exposes growing numbers of multimillion-dollar Ponzi schemes that pay older investors with money from new clients.
