clipper's remarks: How simple minded is this man? He complains that young workers have their taxes paying retirees. Does he not understand that those retirees were paying tax all of their working lives so that they could retire at some stage? Probably because he doesn't pay tax, he thinks all people from his era don't pay tax. The type who blame the unemployed for the unemployment figures.

Twice this week you lambasted the founding principle of Social Security, that, as you described, "we are paying present-day retirees with the taxes paid by young workers in America today." In separate appearances, you called the way Social Security has been structured for more than 70 years an "absolute disgrace," and a "broken" system.

Twice! You even called that pronouncement "Straight Talk™." That's no slip of the tongue. You must mean it.

Bush wants 50 military bases, control of Iraqi airspace and legal immunity for all American soldiers and contractors

A secret deal being negotiated in Baghdad would perpetuate the American military occupation of Iraq indefinitely, regardless of the outcome of the US presidential election in November.

The terms of the impending deal, details of which have been leaked to The Independent, are likely to have an explosive political effect in Iraq. Iraqi officials fear that the accord, under which US troops would occupy permanent bases, conduct military operations, arrest Iraqis and enjoy immunity from Iraqi law, will destabilise Iraq's position in the Middle East and lay the basis for unending conflict in their country.

"Dishonest", "misleading", "lying" and "spinning" are just some of the measured adjectives used in the mainstream US media to characterise George Bush, the president, and Stephen Hadley, his national security adviser, after they embraced the damning National Intelligence Estimate (NIE) summary report on Iran as proof of the effectiveness and success of the administration's Tehran policy.

The NIE judges "with high confidence that in the fall of 2003, Tehran halted its nuclear weapons programme", and that "Tehran's decision to halt its nuclear weapons programme suggests it is less determined to develop nuclear weapons than we have been judging since 2005".

So why does Bush sound stupid? One doctor thinks he shows signs of “presenile dementia,” or an early onset of Alzheimer’s disease.

This summer, Joseph Price, a self-described “country doctor” in Carsonville, Mich., was reading a long article in The Atlantic about Bush’s speaking style. Author James Fallows alluded to Bush’s malapropisms and to speculation that Bush had a learning disorder or dyslexia. But those conditions generally manifest themselves in childhood. Furthermore, Fallows wrote, “through his forties Bush was perfectly articulate.”

Dr. Price’s children happened to have given him a daily tear-off calendar of “Bushisms” for Christmas. “They are horrible, but they are also diagnostic,” Price says. When he read that Bush had spoken clearly and performed well while debating Texas politician Ann Richards in 1994, Price thought: “My God, the only way you can explain that is by being Alzheimer’s.”

Mandela still alive after embarrassing Bush remark

Nelson Mandela is still very much alive despite an embarrassing gaffe by US President George W Bush, who alluded to the former South African leader's death in an attempt to explain sectarian violence in Iraq.

"It's out there. All we can do is reassure people, especially South Africans, that President Mandela is alive," Achmat Dangor, chief executive officer of the Nelson Mandela Foundation, said as Mr Bush's comments received worldwide coverage.

In a speech defending his administration's Iraq policy, Mr Bush said former Iraqi president Saddam Hussein's brutality had made it impossible for a unifying leader to emerge and stop the sectarian violence that has engulfed the Middle Eastern nation.

"I heard somebody say, 'where's Mandela?' Well, Mandela's dead because Saddam Hussein killed all the Mandelas," Mr Bush, who has a reputation for verbal faux pas, said in a press conference in Washington on Thursday.

George Bush has arrived in Sydney in a good mood - a very good mood.

At this morning's press conference, the US President was animated and humorous and far from a leader portrayed by some as a lame duck.

He believes, or would have us believe, that things are going better there now. And, he is a man relishing the opportunity to impart some positive news - the withdrawal of some troops after he returns to Washington next week.

Mr Bush complained that al Anbar province, which he visited, had been "written off by the experts as lost to al-Qaeda".

"The province I saw wasn't lost to the extremists. The place I went to had changed dramatically," he said.

"The security situation is changing. That is the briefing I have received from David Petraeus, our general on the ground."

Mr Bush perhaps summed it up best when the Deputy Prime Minister Mark Vaile greeted him at the airport and asked "How was Baghdad?"

"We're kicking ass," Mr Bush responded.

BUSH COMMUTES SENTENCE FOR LIBBY

President Bush commuted the sentence of former aide I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby Monday, sparing him from a 2 1/2-year prison term in the CIA leak case.

Bush left intact a $250,000 fine and two years probation for Libby, according to a senior White House official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the decision had not been announced.

Bush's move came hours after a federal appeals panel ruled Libby could not delay his prison term in the CIA leak case. That decision put the pressure on the president, who had been sidestepping calls by Libby's allies to pardon the former chief of staff to Vice President Dick Cheney.

Libby was convicted in March of lying to authorities and obstructing the investigation into the 2003 leak of CIA operative's identity. He was the highest-ranking White House official ordered to prison since the Iran-Contra affair.
