May 5, 2008 -- A new, simplified family tree of humanity has dealt a blow to those who contend that the enigmatic hominids known as Neanderthals intermingled with our forebears.

Neanderthals were a separate species to Homo sapiens, as anatomically modern humans are known, rather than offshoots of the same species, the new organigram published Sunday by the journal Nature declares.

The method, invented by evolutionary analysts in Argentina, marks a break with the conventional technique by which anthropologists chart the twists and turns of the human odyssey.

That technique typically divides the genus Homo into various classifications according to the shape of key facial features -- "flat-faced," "protruding-faced" and so on.

Reconciling these diverse classifications from a tiny number of specimens spanning millions of years has led to lots of claims and counter-claims, as well as much confusion in the general public, about how we came to be here.

EVANSVILLE, Indiana (Reuters) - Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton admitted on Monday it would be tough to lift the federal gasoline tax this summer as she has proposed because of a likely veto from President George W. Bush.

Clinton, a New York senator, and rival Barack Obama, a senator from Illinois, have sparred over the gasoline tax before primary elections on Tuesday in Indiana and North Carolina.

Obama has accused the former first lady of political pandering with a proposal that would not save consumers much money in the end.

Clinton says the legislation would save the average driver about $70 over the summer and should be advocated even if chances of passage are slim.

"Realistically, it's tough. I know that," she told reporters on her campaign plane on Monday.

"Do I think we can get it done, past a veto by President Bush as the ultimate blocker?" she said. "It's obviously a very difficult challenge. But that doesn't mean you don't try."

AUSTRALIA'S top earners nearly doubled their income during the Howard government years, new figures have revealed, providing ammunition to Treasurer Wayne Swan as he prepares to slug the rich in the federal budget.

An analysis prepared by Treasury shows that families with an earner in the top 3% of taxpayers have enjoyed an 85% increase in their disposable incomes since 1996 — about 1.7 times the rise for families with an average income earner.

The top 3% have also seen their average rate of tax fall by 6.2 percentage points in that period, almost twice the 3.3 percentage point reduction for someone on average earnings.

The analysis, prepared at the Government's request and obtained by The Age, could be used by Mr Swan next week to defend a squeeze on the rich in a budget designed to tackle inflation with big spending cuts.

It's got the sort of sights that make picture editors weep with joy: the Grand Canyon, Arches National Park, Yosemite National Park, the Rocky Mountains, New England in autumn...

It's got enough adventure activities to keep the craziest of adrenalin junkies amused: you can climb mountains, leap off bridges, abseil down cliffs, ski, snowboard, surf, make jokes about Texans...

It's also got some of the best shopping in the world, round-the-calendar sporting events, incredibly friendly people, excellent food, and, with the exchange rate the way it is, it's also cheap.

So why is it so hard to admit you like the good 'ole US of A?

I first touched down in the US as a kid, a time when it's impossible to hate the place.

Film-maker seeks to bust popular shark myths

The popular image of the shark is of a veracious man-eating predator, which has meant that many shark species are being hunted without consideration.

Now a young Canadian film-maker has produced a documentary which challenges many myths associated with these creatures that predate the dinosaur.

Getting up close with the Caribbean reef shark is not everyone's idea of fun, but then Rob Stewart is not your every man.

A wildlife photographer by trade, he decided he wanted to make a movie about sharks, a movie that would counter the image as a man-eating killer played up by some fishermen and film-makers.

"As a kid, I thought sharks were the most cool animal the planet had, the one we knew so little about," he said.

"I started swimming with sharks as a teenager and found it was a totally life-changing experience. You get to fly in a three dimensional world with dragons."
