It's a bucolic scene that could have happened any time in the past century. But what makes it notable in 2008 is that the guests who have been helping Mr Koarik pick the olives are Israeli Jews: a rabbi, an anthropologist and a youth worker, Hellela Siew.

Asked why he and his volunteers make this often risky mission each year, the US-born rabbi says "if we really believe" the Biblical text that all human beings are made in God's image, "we have got to put our money where our mouth is and be here in an active way to defend human rights". And he also cites the "dialogue of the olive groves" in which Israelis and Palestinians who "have to live and die here together" have "no choice but to communicate"

Tags: palestine-israel

<clipSource>http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/middle-east/jews-protect-palestinians-in-harvest-of-hate-956706.html</clipSource>

Country First?
Thus the paradox of a "pro-life" administration adopting a policy whose result will be tens of thousands of additional abortions each year - along with more women dying in childbirth.

The saga also spotlights a clear difference between Senators Barack Obama and John McCain.

Obama supports UN-led efforts to promote family planning; McCain stands with President Bush in opposing certain crucial efforts to help women reduce unwanted pregnancies in Africa and Asia.

<clipSource>http://www.iht.com/articles/2008/10/09/opinion/edkristof.php</clipSource>

Why Republican Base loves Sarah Palin

clipped by: thinkingblue
clipper's remarks: This article. goes right to the heart of why the Republican base is so in love with Sarah Palin. She doesn't give them facts, she gives them the red-meat they lust for. I'm sure most, can remember people like Palin, in high school. The bubbly types, who dub anyone who doesn't fit their interpretation of what's "IN", a pariah. Yes, they have a blueprint of what is "IN", the right style, a snooty air, a superficial manner will get you, "IN". As bad as this exclusivity is, it could be tolerated if they also had a "live and let live" attitude. But unfortunately, anyone who crosses their path, who's not "IN" they will socially banish. They do this, by falsely labeling, and contriving suspicions of any non-"IN", creating an impression that something is shockingly wrong with anyone who, by their calculations, cannot be part of their "IN" crowd. But what's most perplexing is... It's one thing to behave like this in a state of childhood but carried into adulthood? Mind boggling!

Clip Source: seattlepi.nwsource.com

Palin's ascension shows GOP's lack of interest in governing

JAY BOOKMAN

Republican Party has held the White House for the past eight years and has

                        SYDNEY (AFP) -
Australians who sound like crocodile hunter Steve Irwin or Crocodile Dundee actor Paul Hogan could soon be a relic of the past, a report said on Sunday.

Research shows the nasal Australian twang -- exemplified by the late Irwin and the character Mick 'Crocodile' Dundee -- will be phased out within a few decades as the nation shakes loose its colonial roots and moves towards a standard national pronunciation, The Sunday Telegraph said.

"Australians are becoming more confident with the standard Australian accent -- and that means there's no longer the need for those sorts of extreme sounds," lexicographer Moore said.

Moore said the broad accents came from the need for cultural distinction in the late 19th century while the posh accents evolved from the use of what is commonly known as Queen's English in education in the late 1800s.

<clipSource>http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20081005/ts_afp/australialanguageoffbeat</clipSource>

Why Do People Smoke After Having Sex?

clipped by: debbyski
clipper's remarks: "On their first date, a man asked his companion if she'd like a drink. "Okay," she replied.

"What will you tell your Sunday school class?" he asked, shocked.

"The same thing I always tell them: 'You do not have to drink or smoke to have a good time.'"

That's my motto

Clip Source: www.answerbag.com

I cant figure it out!

Did they risk other peoples' money? Did they know we were in a housing bubble? Was it explained that the ARM would default if their home value declined? Why do we let professional sales-people make money leading people into the largest purchase in their lives without issuing precautions that first-time homebuyers often do not understand? And why is the homebuyer the loser, rather than the shyster that sold them a loan they could not possibly have understood? Why do we let them take our homes away?

Clip Source: ehrenreich.blogs.com

A few days before Congress passed its Housing Bill, Carlene

“that the credit crisis was God's fault rather than the doing of the bankers
and the rating agencies and the government's snoozing watchdogs.” For contrast,
he cites the spirited response to the depression of the 1890s, when
lawyer/agitator Mary Lease stirred crowds with the message that “We want the

We should be paying our teachers, police, fireman, EMT/Medics, etc. more money. These are the people who make a difference in our communities and countries. Everyone knows teachers don’t make $125,000. My second thought was, “Why shouldn’t we?” After visiting the school’s Web site and reading a New York Times article about the school, I realized it was not only legit, but potentially revolutionary in terms of education reform. So this school year, in addition to my regular special education teaching job, I’ve decided to get involved in the creation of this new school.

Tags: teachers, salaries, income, teaching, money

<clipSource>http://lessonplans.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/10/07/well-paid-teachers-im-on-board/</clipSource>

Obama Ayers smear ends here

clipped by: deb2012

Clip Source: www.npr.org

Walter Annenberg, a lifelong Republican and former ambassador who was
appointed by Presidents Nixon and Reagan, funded an ambitious program to reform
urban education in many cities in the mid 1990s. Ayers was an important member
of the group that developed and wrote the grant proposal to the Annenberg
