In the shade of the trees where they have been picking olives all morning, in this wadi, south-east of Nablus, a Palestinian farmer, Jamal Otman Koarik, and two of his daughters share a lunch of home-baked bread, zatar, oil, courgettes and salad with three visitors. It's a bucolic scene that could have happened any time in the past century. But what makes it notable in 2008 is that the guests who have been helping Mr Koarik pick the olives are Israeli Jews: a rabbi, an anthropologist and a youth worker, Hellela Siew.

Asked why he and his volunteers make this often risky mission each year, the US-born rabbi says "if we really believe" the Biblical text that all human beings are made in God's image, "we have got to put our money where our mouth is and be here in an active way to defend human rights". And he also cites the "dialogue of the olive groves" in which Israelis and Palestinians who "have to live and die here together" have "no choice but to communicate"

Nothing has proven the utter hollowness of John McCain's "Country First" slogan than Sarah Palin's vile behavior the past few days.

We all know by now that her low-blow, guilt-by-association stump speeches, in part claiming that Obama is "palling around with terrorists" -- called "unsubstantiated," and "racially-tinged" by the Associated Press and "appalling" and "the dark territory of race-baiting and xenophobia" by the New York Times -- are part of a negative attack strategy announced publically by senior Republican operatives on Saturday.

Will the disgraceful and desperate attacks hurt Obama? Maybe, maybe not. But one thing is clear: they will hurt our country.

The McCain campaign and the Republican Party continue to prove they are not interested in doing what is best for the country. Instead they are increasing their tactics to actually try and prevent American citizens from voting this November.

The latest illegal, and let me emphasis that, illegal tactic, is mailing out applications for absentee ballots to registered Democrat voters at least 10 states. The ballots the McCain campaign are mailing out in every state contain at least one error meant to disqualify the voter when the application is submitted. The McCain camp say they have sent out over 1 million applications in Ohio alone.

Voters in the following states should be on the lookout for the phony ballots sent by McCain: Florida, Iowa, North Carolina, Ohio, Oregon, Minnesota, Missouri, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Wisconsin. The phony ballots could show up anywhere, so please let your friends and family, especially older members, know to throw the ballots in the garbage.

WASHINGTON -- U.S. intelligence analysts eavesdropped on personal calls between Americans overseas and their families back home and monitored the communications of workers with the Red Cross and other humanitarian organizations, according to two military linguists involved in U.S. surveillance programs.

The accounts are the most detailed to date to challenge the assertions of President Bush, CIA Director Michael V. Hayden and other administration officials that the government's controversial overseas wiretapping activities have been carefully monitored to prevent abuse and invasion of U.S. citizens' privacy.

The linguists said that recordings of intimate conversations between citizens and their loved ones were sometimes passed around, out of prurient interest, among analysts at an electronic surveillance facility at Ft. Gordon, Ga.

Their claims were reported Thursday by ABC News.

I'm sure most, can remember people like Palin, in high school. The bubbly types, who dub anyone who doesn't fit their interpretation of what's "IN", a pariah. Yes, they have a blueprint of what is "IN", the right style, a snooty air, a superficial manner will get you, "IN". As bad as this exclusivity is, it could be tolerated if they also had a "live and let live" attitude. But unfortunately, anyone who crosses their path, who's not "IN" they will socially banish. They do this, by falsely labeling, and contriving suspicions of any non-"IN", creating an impression that something is shockingly wrong with anyone who, by their calculations, cannot be part of their "IN" crowd. But what's most perplexing is... It's one thing to behave like this in a state of childhood but carried into adulthood? Mind boggling!

SYDNEY (AFP) - Australians who sound like crocodile hunter Steve Irwin or Crocodile Dundee actor Paul Hogan could soon be a relic of the past, a report said on Sunday.

Research shows the nasal Australian twang -- exemplified by the late Irwin and the character Mick 'Crocodile' Dundee -- will be phased out within a few decades as the nation shakes loose its colonial roots and moves towards a standard national pronunciation, The Sunday Telegraph said.

"Australians are becoming more confident with the standard Australian accent -- and that means there's no longer the need for those sorts of extreme sounds," lexicographer Moore said.

Moore said the broad accents came from the need for cultural distinction in the late 19th century while the posh accents evolved from the use of what is commonly known as Queen's English in education in the late 1800s.

Maasai herdsmen in Kenya have turned to an age-old contraceptive device, the "olor", to protect their precious goat herds from an ongoing drought.

The olor is made from cowhide or a square piece of plastic, and is tied around the belly of the male goat.

It prevents the bucks from mating with the female goats.

The herdsmen are using the device to limit the goat population and ensure there are not too many animals grazing on sparse vegetation.

"We don't want them to breed in this drought," says Mr Ole Ngoshoi Kipameto, a goat owner in Kajiado district.

The area, which is 80km (50 miles) from the capital, Nairobi, has received insufficient rainfall, making the landscape barren and forcing residents to move from place to place in search of pasture and water.

"We tie this hide under the belly of the buck for three months. After that we remove it and then they can breed by November when the short rains come," Mr Kipameto says.

Everyone knows teachers don’t make $125,000. My second thought was, “Why shouldn’t we?” After visiting the school’s Web site and reading a New York Times article about the school, I realized it was not only legit, but potentially revolutionary in terms of education reform. So this school year, in addition to my regular special education teaching job, I’ve decided to get involved in the creation of this new school.

Walter Annenberg, a lifelong Republican and former ambassador who was appointed by Presidents Nixon and Reagan, funded an ambitious program to reform urban education in many cities in the mid 1990s. Ayers was an important member of the group that developed and wrote the grant proposal to the Annenberg Foundation.

But no one on the board or on the Annenberg Challenge staff remembers Obama being any closer to Ayers than to any other member of the board. The Annenberg board also included several civic, business and education leaders, many of them Republicans.
