Over one hundred tribes around the world choose to reject contact with outsiders. They are the most vulnerable peoples on the planet.

Many of them are living on the run, fleeing invasions of their land by colonists, loggers, oil crews and cattle ranchers. They have often seen their friends and families die at the hands of outsiders, in unreported massacres or epidemics.

Paulo Moura

Acclaimed reedman Paulo Moura celebrates the early 20th century form known as "choro" in a recreation of music by the famous Brazilian composer Alfredo da Rocha Viana Filho, who is known throughout the world as Pixinguinha. Credited for introducing the saxophone to Brazilian music, Pixinguinha is also widely recognized for his contribution to the development of counterpoint in the popular choro.

As the first artist to revolutionize the basic idea and form of choro, Pixinguinha has been compared to Louis Armstrong, whose reinvention of the soloist as improviser forever changed the way jazz music was played.

Moura, in addition to being one of Brazil's most important practitioners of choro, is a master of bossa nova, samba de gafieira and jazz. With a solid background in harmony, counterpoint and fugue Moura, like Pixinguinha, has also established a reputation as a great arranger.

clipper's remarks: i have a short confession -)) i do have a grain of a deep sentiment to this locus -)) i was staying there 4 awhile 20 years ago ... there was no electricity, no flowing water but from a far away well, there was some few houses of fishermen and very few tourist. beautiful seashore amazing pure white dunes hosting some blue-turquoise lagoons. a lot of music & of course the traditional sexual dance called Forro. It seems a bit different today (from the vids))) .. yet some still claim it is a very high approximation to Paradiso ..............

MANAUS, Brazil - In the 1980s, scientists sounded the alarm: The Amazon was burning and would be gone by the end of the century.

Two decades later, the dire predictions have not come to pass. Around 80 percent of the world's largest remaining tropical wilderness is still standing — a vast carpet of green crisscrossed by the Amazon river and its 1,100 tributaries.

But scientists warn that the destruction only has slowed, and a Connecticut-sized chunk disappears every year for ranching, farming, and logging.

The Amazon is an important absorber of carbon dioxide, and the smaller it gets, the greater the risks to the climate, the World Wide Fund for Nature warned in a report released last week at the U.N. conference on climate change in Bali, Indonesia.

RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil - President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva visited a teeming hillside shantytown Friday to launch a multimillion-dollar program to build an outdoor elevator, sewage systems, improve roads and upgrade housing for slum residents.

Silva is the first Brazilian president to visit the Cantagalo shantytown or "favela," perched above the upscale beach districts of Copacabana and Ipanema.

"We can't say that we will build mansions. We don't have money for that," Silva told a cheering crowd, packed with children waving Brazilian flags. "But we want to transform where you live into a decent and dignified place that you can be proud to live in."

Rio's shantytowns sprung up at the end of the 19th century as freed slaves made their homes on unclaimed land, mostly along the city's steep hillsides. Later migrants from the country's poor northeast swelled the favelas.

Today, about a fifth of Rio de Janeiro's 6 million residents live in the favelas. Many have been there for generations.
