Selling snow to the Swiss

An Israeli company has managed to sell a locally made snow machine to Switzerland, a country whose middle names are winter and ski.

After last year's snow fall was delayed, and the ski slopes went without snow for most of the season, the Swiss began to worry about their successful tourist business.

Swiss media outlets reported that due to the severity of the problem, scientists were called in and were now looking into what is being described as a groundbreaking solution: A system that would allow the snow to last even into the hot summer months.

In a month's time, an Israeli made snow cannon will be put into use in

Zermatt

ski resort, and unlike regular snow cannons, this one works even if the temperatures are way above zero.

The Israeli snow cannon, named "IDE Snowmaker", was originally created for the purposes of desalinization of salt water.

The cost of this 30-ton, 11-meter (36-feet) machine is about NIS 7 million ($1.9 million).

No individual gold has mattered so much to so many people in the history of Olympics. It was a medal for Abhinav; it was redemption for India. Never again will anyone be able to point a smug, sardonic finger and say: "No Indian is good enough to win an individual Olympic gold."

this is the first time that an Indian has won an individual gold since modern Olympics started in 1896.

Can Michael Phelps turn gold into Hollywood dollars?

The advertising world has long had an ambivalent relationship with Olympic athletes; though coverage is saturated during the Games, interest in the quadrennial competition fades once its torch is extinguished.

So despite endless exposure, athletic dominance and a boy-next-door likability, one of the best athletes the U.S. has ever produced might be a ho-hum story when he climbs out of the pool.

In a pre-endorsement age, Hollywood would scour the Olympics for athletes and slot them into movies, as they did with Norwegian figure skater Sonja Henie and U.S. swimmers Buster Crabbe and Johnny Weissmuller.

"Once upon a time studios would find these beautiful creatures and put them in movies," Hollywood publicity guru Tony Angellotti said. "And if someone isn't that facile with the English language, like Weissmuller, well, you just make him Tarzan."

I found this wild LED wall today while perusing the interweb that is completely powered by solar power. It is located at the Xicui entertainment complex in Beijing, near the site of the 2008 Olympics.

Polycrystalline photovoltaic cells are laminated in the glass wall curtain at various density throughout, allowing natural light into the interior.

The wall is made up of about 2,300 color (RGB) light emitting diodes to create a 24,000 sq. ft. screen for dynamic visual display. As far as I can tell, it will be projecting abstract art and atmospheric panoramas predominantly.

Dynamic large-scale public art that utilizes renewable energy from the ambient environment. If China is going to continue on their headlong charge into industrial development, they'd be wise to follow this example toward innovation and clean, local energy production.

In a surprising discovery, scientists believe they have found modern man's language gene in the DNA of the extinct race of Neanderthals, raising the possibility that, contrary to the conventional wisdom, Neanderthals may have whiled away the winter with conversation, gossip and debate.

The language gene is shared with only one other species, Homo Sapiens. If true, the Neanderthals may have had their own distinct culture, customs and history.

Professor Svante Paabo, who has been leading the Neanderthal genome project at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig, Germany, said the presence of the language gene would change the way people view Neanderthals.

The discovery of the gene, called FOXP2, have provided the strongest evidence yet that these heavily built species were capable of speech, although the researchers are unable to say what extent their linguistic ability would have been.

Haaretz's Avi Issacharaoff traveled to California to tell the unique tale of Masad Yousef, the 30-year-old son of Hamas leader Sheik Hassan Yousef, who has converted to Christianity and is seeking refuge in the United States.

In an extended interview, Yousef, who now calls himself Joseph, castigates Hamas as morally and politically bankrupt.

"They are blind and ignorant," Yousef says in the interview. "It's true, there are good and bad people everywhere, but Hamas supporters don't understand that they are led by a wicked and cruel group that brainwashes the children and gets them to believe that if they carry out a suicide attack they'll get to Paradise."

Yousef says that his father is part of the pragmatic wing of Hamas leaders that quietly opposed suicide bombings and seeks compromise with Israel.

Committing Poetry is a poetic glance at events that defined the struggle of a nation at war abroad, and with its people. When the bombs began to fall on Iraq, Humanities Teacher and Youth Poetry Coach, Bill Nevins, was suspended and later, fired, from his teaching job after standing up for student freedom of expression.

His outspoken Rio Rancho High School Poetry Slam Team was forcibly disbanded and silenced. Nevins was the last of seven New Mexico educators removed by fearful administrators seeking to quell the questions, thoughts, debates, and artwork of students.

Just days after Nevins' removal, hundreds of peaceful protestors were brutally assaulted by police. Demonstrators were continuously corralled into "Free Speech Zones" away from traffic and public view.

Yet, out of this fire arose a diverse community of artisans, poets, & musicians whose courageous words could not be silenced.

They came together in a series of unifying events

it was called, Poetic Justice.
