Palestinian Olympic team struggles against PA's unwillingness to support athletes

Gadir Garouf is a 17-year old runner for the Palestinian Olympic team, and according to many, the most promising talent being sent to Beijing on the team. However, she has been training in her old sneakers, unable to afford even a pair of running shoes.

"I can see the medal," she whispers. "I know it's impossible, but I can dream, can't I?" And perhaps the name 'dream team' is most suitable for this team of athletes,

The Palestinian Authority's Olympic budget doesn't even allow for athlete vitamin supplements, which cost a whopping $75.

The team's swimmer, Zakiya Nassar, is in an even bigger bind. She is the only Olympic candidate to see a swimming pool once a month at best.

Lately she has been crying a lot, terrified by the prospect of shaming herself and her nation.

JERUSALEM (AFP) - Lights in the Old City of Jerusalem will be turned off before dawn this week so visiting US President George W. Bush can get a better view of the sun rising over its ancient walls.

Bush, who arrives in the Middle East on Wednesday for a visit lasting more than a week, had made a request to watch the sun rise over the Old City from his suite at the King David Hotel, a municipal spokesman said on Tuesday.

To make the scene more dramatic, the authorities have decided to turn off the lights illuminating the limestone walls before dawn on Thursday and Friday, the spokesman told reporters.

The gesture is just one of several that Bush's Israeli hosts will extend to the president of their main ally during his landmark three-day visit this week -- the first by a sitting US president to Israel and the Palestinian territories in nine years.

Study: Only a third of capital's Arab neighborhoods can be transferred to Palestinian contol

The first claim to the idea of taking Arab neighborhoods in Jerusalem and annexing Jewish neighborhoods outside Jerusalem - such as Ma'aleh Adumim - belongs to Dr. Israel Kimhi, a senior researcher at the Jerusalem Institute for Israel Studies (JIIS).

Kimhi wrote in the report that "the separation, if there is one, will create an urban and regional network different from the one that exists today, something that will affect the functioning of the whole city, and its economic, geopolitical and metropolitan status."

The report describes how Israeli construction in East Jerusalem intentionally created chains of Jewish neighborhoods that bisect Arab neighborhoods, with the intention of preventing a future division of the city.

Names of the Sea

The Dead Sea is located in the Syro-African Rift, a 4000-mile fault line in the earth's crust. The lowest point of dry land on earth is the shoreline of the Dead Sea at 1300 feet below sea level. Yehuda Avner, Israel's former ambassador to Great Britain, reveals in an article for The Jerusalem Post today.

a January 1986 lunch held in honor of the then-visiting prime minister Shimon Peres at the royal residence of Kensington Palace. He recalls Peres giving Diana, who looked "exquisite in a simple creation of red," a Roman coin bearing the likeness of Diana, the goddess of the hunt, with which she was delighted. The "avowed equestrian" Charles was given a statuette of a terra-cotta horse of ancient Greek provenance. Both the gifts had been unearthed in Jerusalem.

Later, the princess turned to Peres and told him, "Mr. Peres, I always think of Israel as a plucky little country."

"That is kind of you," said the premier graciously.

Said Charles: "As for me, I always find the Middle East so full of impenetrable intricacies... Do you think a day will ever come when you and your neighbors will get along together?"

"One day," said Peres wistfully.
