Battery Breakthrough?

A Texas company says it can make a new ultracapacitor power system to replace the electrochemical batteries in everything from cars to laptops.

The company boldly claims that its system, a kind of battery-ultracapacitor hybrid based on barium-titanate powders, will dramatically outperform the best lithium-ion batteries on the market in terms of energy density, price, charge time, and safety. Pound for pound, it will also pack 10 times the punch of lead-acid batteries at half the cost and without the need for toxic materials or chemicals, according to the company.

The implications are enormous and, for many, unbelievable. Such a breakthrough has the potential to radically transform a transportation sector already flirting with an electric renaissance

Obesity Is 'Socially Contagious'

Science Daily — Are your friends making you fat? Or keeping you slender? According to new research from Harvard and the University of California, San Diego, the short answer on both counts is "yes."

If a person you consider a friend becomes obese, the researchers found, your own chances of becoming obese go up 57 percent. Among mutual friends, the effect is even stronger, with chances increasing 171 percent.

The researchers analyzed data over a period of 32 years for 12,067 adults, who underwent repeated medical assessments as part of the Framingham Heart Study. They were able to map a densely interconnected social network of the study's subjects by using the tracking sheets (which had previously been archived in a basement) that recorded not only the subjects' family members but also unrelated friends who could be expected to find them in a few years.

Why Bikes Are a Sustainable Wonder

The gist: Two-wheeling ranks as the most energy-efficient form of travel--and makes you healthier to boot. Let's give it more respect.

The bicycle--the most energy-efficient form of travel ever devised--deserves better. Pound for pound, a person on a bicycle expends less energy than any creature or machine covering the same distance. (A human walking spends about three times as much energy per pound; even a salmon swimming spends about twice as much.)

Increased use of bicycles as transportation could

also help reduce the huge toll of sedentary lifestyles on North Americans. In the United States, more people are at risk of heart disease--the nation's leading killer--due to physical inactivity than any other factor, including smoking and fat-laden diets. Forty percent of all American adults get almost no exercise; only 1 out of 13 gets the recommended amount.

Last month Vancity—Canada's largest credit union set their Bike Share program a’rolling by infusing the local community of Vancouver with almost 50 fire engine red bicycles. The riders get to keep their bikes for a max of three weeks, then they’re asked to exchange them with new riders. Up until 7 September 2007, that is, when anyone in possession of a Vancity groovy chrome steed is requested to return it, so it can be passed to PEDAL (Pedal Energy Development Alternatives), a local non-profit, that will in turn donate them to individuals in low-income communities. The credit union has a website (www.changeeverything.ca) to capture community feedback and their branches are acting as drop-off locations should any bikes need a tune-up. Not quite the grand scale of bike sharing ventures in Barcelona, London, Lyon or Paris (see recap here), but still highly commendable. ::Vancity Bike Share, via Springwise. (Image from Flickr.)

I'll never own a car if I can help it. Early in 1999, I decided that I could justify assembling the most commodious and delightful bike imaginable - a bike for all-hours, all-weather transportation in hilly San Francisco, loaded touring, travel, fun, hauling kegs and cat litter, and just about anything else not involving excessive risk of theft. I took my best shot, and have been riding it for several mostly joyous, theft-free weeks at this writing. It doesn't have a name; neither do your shoes. But I figure it needs a Web page:

SCAMP To Include Bike Routes

The South Campus Area Master Plan (SCAMP) is a conceptual proposal to address three interrelated problems faced by local Provo residents.

Street Modifications

The SCAMP proposal calls for several major changes to area streets. 7^th North would be widened from its existing two to four lanes of travel creating a needed east-west arterial in the south of campus area. Several north-south connections between campus could be converted to "park blocks" where typical vehicle traffic would be prohibited and the streets would be converted to landscaped urban parks with pedestrian, bicycle and emergency vehicle access. These conversions would occur as new development is approved with rear alley access for building residents and services (trash pickup, utility services etc.). 7th North and 5^th North traffic would be "calmed" by traffic circles.

Bike Patrol

There are four officers assigned to the Provo Police Bike Patrol. They patrol the downtown neigborhoods on bicycles which allows them opportunity to interact with the public and sneak up on the criminals. They also assist with bike rodeos, special events, parades, First Night, and any other assignments where a uniformed officer on a bike would be most beneficial.
