In a stunning vote that shocked the capital and worldwide markets, the House on Monday defeated a $700 billion emergency rescue for the nation’s financial system, ignoring urgent warnings from President Bush and congressional leaders of both parties that the economy could nosedive without it.

Stocks plummeted on Wall Street even before the 228-205 vote to reject the bill was officially announced on the House floor.

As a digital screen in the House chamber recorded a cascade of “no” votes against the bailout, Democratic Rep. Joe Crowley of New York shouted news of the falling Dow Jones industrials. “Six hundred points!” he yelled, jabbing his thumb downward. The decline was about 530 points shortly before the close of the trading day.

There has been a surge in interest in election polling given the previous two close presidential elections. In both 2000 and 2004, most national telephone polls were very accurate. Polls in both years forecasted a close election, and in 2004 the average of several major national polls taken in the days leading up to the election showed President George W. Bush with a 1.6 percentage point advantage over Senator John Kerry, just a slight understatement of Bush's actual margin of victory (2.4 percentage points). Of the major news organizations, only one had Kerry ahead, and that was by less than the margin of error.

All of the reasons why the economy is so bad is because of the price for a barrel of oil Think about it. Oil prices reaching an all time high of over $100 per barrel has created a chain reaction. Pricing for milk, eggs, meat, poultry, and everything else has gone up because of the amount of gas it now takes to move these products. Gas used to remain at a somewhat stead pricing of around a dollar per gallon but the way we are heading gas will soon be the largest expense of our income.

They were not too pleased when Ian Thomas put this map on the Internet, because it showed the world that the exploration plans would be very harmful. Thomas was sacked on the spot.

Within days Thomas received thousands of email messages of support from people concerned about the environment. Pressure groups took up his case. He is now making maps for the World Wildlife Fund, where he is appreciated.

Crawford, Texas - President George W Bush signed a bill aimed at giving the public and the media greater access to information about what the government is doing.

The new law toughens the Freedom of Information Act, the first such makeover to the signature public-access law in a decade. It amounts to a congressional pushback against the Bush administration's movement to greater secrecy since the terrorist attacks of 2001.

Bush signed the bill without comment on Monday in one of his final decisions of the year.

The legislation creates a system for the media and public to track the status of their FOIA requests. It establishes a hotline service for all federal agencies to deal with problems and an ombudsman to provide an alternative to litigation in disclosure disputes.

The law also restores a presumption of a standard that orders government agencies to release information on request unless there is a finding that disclosure could do harm.

Dan Abrams examined the Bush administration's unprecedented use of signing statements in the second installment of his week-long MSNBC series on "Bush League Justice."

"President Bush doesn't like to veto laws," Abrams began. "He doesn't have to. Since he took office, he's been attaching conditions to laws already passed by Congress, allowing him to essentially disobey the will of Congress and dramatically expand his own power."

Similarly, when a bill required the Justice Department to report to Congress on the use of the Patriot Act, Bush added a proviso that he could override this requirement any time he thought necessary.

For example, when Congress voted overwhelmingly to ban torture, Bush announced that this would "make it clear to the world that this government does not torture." Two weeks later, he added a signing statement to the bill that allowed him to ignore it.

The Kremlin has steadily increased spending on defense modernization and revived symbolic long-range aerial reconnaissance patrols toward U.S. and European airspace.

Putin also has threatened to re-target Russian nuclear missiles at Europe if Bush deploys U.S. missile defenses in Poland and the Czech Republic, declared his intention to trash treaties that eliminate a class of nuclear missiles and limit conventional military forces in Europe and compared the United States under Bush to Germany under Hitler.

What many experts regard as the real Putin — a hard-line, derisive Russian nationalist — was on display Friday as he greeted visiting Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and Defense Secretary Robert Gates ahead of talks that failed to break the impasses over missile defense and other key security issues.
