Whether we are seeking a mate or sizing up a potential rival, good-looking people capture our attention nearly instantaneously and render us temporarily helpless to turn our eyes away from them, according to a new Florida State University study.

“It’s like magnetism at the level of visual attention,” said Jon Mane

In a series of three experiments, Maner and his colleagues found that the study participants, all heterosexual men and women, fixated on highly attractive people within the first half of a second of seeing them. Single folks ogled the opposite sex, of course, but those in committed relationships also checked people out, with one major difference: They were more interested in beautiful people of the same sex.

Modern technology has enhanced these pitfalls.

Maner said he was surprised that his studies showed little differences between the sexes when it came to fixating on eye-catching people.

More from the multi-touch bandwagon, although I should point out this isn’t a product from Hewlett Packard, but an interactive marketing tool for the D5 conference, created by San Francisco agency Obscura Digital (on behalf of ad agency Goodby Silverstein Partners).

I mentioned previously that I’d only post new developments in the area of multi-touch. Microsoft got a post for getting something ready as a packaged product. I am posting this project because of its scale, 16 x 8 feet, and that the whole thing was apparently created in just 4 weeks, hardware and software.

The style of prose is a bit too provocative given the delicate subject but I found the reading very interesting with some earnest parapraphs. There are some really complex infidelity stories in the article. Hard to believe life can be so messy.

Men who get caught screwing around are more likely to be honest about the sex than women. Men will confess the full sexual details, even if they are vague about the emotions. Women on the other hand will confess to total consuming love and suicidal desire to die with some man, while insisting no sex ever took place. I would believe that if I'd ever seen a man describe the affair as so consumingly intense from the waist up and so chaste from the waist down. I assume these women are lying to me about what they know they did or did not do, while I assume that the men really are honest about the genital ups and downs—and honestly confused about the emotional ones.

I think I've gotten more from infidelity as an observer than all the participants I've seen.

For the greatest enjoyment of infidelity, I recommend you observe from a safe physical and emotional distance and avoid any suicidal impulse to become a participant.

The research suggests that early human ancestors may have been far more sophisticated in their mental capacities than previously thought, she added.

The lab chimpanzees failed both tests given the other chimps. "Since we were able to measure significant differences in nonhumans, imagine the exponential impact on human children under difficult and impoverished conditions in the home that can have long-term effects on their ability to pay attention, remember, learn and process information in general," Boysen said.

"So, the bottom line is that each group of chimps, the wild-born and the enculturated ones, acquired the behaviors and skills of their respective cultures, in a very real sense."

In African naked mole-rat colonies, the queen is the only reproducing female—a feat she accomplishes by bullying around her fellow blind, tunnel-digging companions.

“The queen exerts her dominance over the colony by, literally, pushing the other members of the colony around. She shoves them to show who’s boss,” said Chris Faulkes, a zoologist at the University of London.

Faulkes explained that the stressful domination reduces fertility hormone levels—effectively suppressing puberty in young mole-rats, lowering sperm counts in males and even turning off the female ovulatory cycle .

Faulkes thinks stress and fertility areas of the brain are closely related in most mammals, so careful comparisons of mole-rats to humans could reveal how genes, environment, up-bringing and culture contribute to human infertility.

Men and Women Really Do Think Differently

The brain is made primarily of two different types of tissue, called gray matter and white matter. This new research reveals that men think more with their gray matter, and women think more with white. Researchers stressed that just because the two sexes think differently, this does not affect intellectual performance.

In human brains, gray matter represents information processing centers, whereas white matter works to network these processing centers.

Scientists find it very interesting that while men and women use two very different activity centers and neurological pathways, men and women perform equally well on broad measures of cognitive ability, such as intelligence tests.
