a four-day crackdown on the indigent. How do you know when someone is indigent?

The viciousness of the official animus toward the indigent can be breathtaking.

A number of cities, led by Las Vegas, passed ordinances forbidding the sharing of food with the indigent in public places, and several members of the group were arrested.

After months of bargaining the strike began on July 13th, after Vale Inco refused to alter its original demands for concessions. Union members in Sudbury and Port Colburne in Ontario and Voise Bay in Labrador responded by voting 85% in favor of taking strike action. The most contentious concessions demanded by the company are a drastic change in pension benefits for new hires, changes to seniority rights and a cap on what’s known as the Nickel Bonus. This bonus was negotiated in earlier years to allow the company to benefit from relatively lower wages when nickel prices were depressed and workers to benefit when the price was high.

These folks have a lot to learn about civil liberties, not to mention a lot about Christianity, too.

Christian Group to Burn Children's Book at the Stake

Now an outfit called the Christian Civil Liberties Union has gotten in on the act, suing the library for, according to the West Bend Daily News, "damaging" the "mental and emotional well-being" of several individuals by displaying "Baby Be-Bop" in the library. Since attempts to label the novel as "pornographic" have failed, the (somewhat shadowy) CCLU hopes to brand it as hate speech, in part because it contains the word "nigger." The complainants, described as "elderly" by the newspaper, claim that Block's novel is "explicitly vulgar, racial [sic] and anti-Christian." They want the library's copy not only removed but publicly burned.

These folks have a lot to learn about civil liberties, not to mention a lot about Christianity, too.

Zinn: America has been heading -- for some time, and is heading right now -- toward less and less world power, less and less influence. Obviously, since the war in Iraq, the rest of the world has fallen away from the United States, and if American foreign policy continues in the way it has been -- that is aggressive and violent and uncaring about the feelings and thoughts of other people -- then the influence of the United States is going to decline more and more.

Is there any hope the US will change its approach to the rest of the world?

How did the US get to this point?

So I think we are in a situation where we are going to need some very fundamental changes in American society if the American people are going to be finally satisfied with the kind of society we have.
