seems a brazenly inappropriate choice. Great though Virginia Plain was, he must know less about contemporary pop, let alone contemporary youth, than actual tuneful young people such as the Sugababes, Patrick Wolf or Arctic Monkeys - if the Lib Dems have to draft in pop stars at all.

Perhaps the countless members of the Wu Tang Clan could advise Clegg on keeping his frontbench down to a manageable number, or the famously frugal and restrained Rufus Wainwright put his talents to good use balancing the party's budget. The Streets, Pete Doherty, Amy Winehouse and the Happy Mondays in charge of drugs reform?

Morrissey on immigration?

Or pop stars could go back to writing songs and politicians to running the country.

What is Openomy?

How much storage do I receive?
Currently, all storage is 1gb. The plan is to increase this in the future. Let us know what you think is fair.

To begin, you'll want to check out the API documentation. To get a general idea of how it works, read How Web Apps Work.

What's the cost?
Openomy is completely free for now. In the future there will be an additional premium membership, in exchange for some nice extras. The APIs (i.e. creating applications) are also completely free to use, but a similar structure may one day appear as well. This would likely be limited to commercial applications.

Are there any example applications?
Yes! Maurice Codik developed a Ruby on Rails application that lets you publish your tags as RSS feeds. Learn more.

Here’s a graphic timeline explaining how House Speaker Dennis Hastert (R-IL) used a federal earmark to turn a $1.5 million profit:

August 2002: “Hastert and his wife bought a 195-acre farm in Plano in 2002, of which 69.5 acres had no access to roads.” The parcel is located in Hastert’s congressional district (IL-14).

February 2004: Hastert and two partners purchase another 69 acres adjacent to the original property. Here’s a picture of the two parcels, outlined in yellow:

August 2005: Hastert secures $207 million in federal dollars to build the “Prairie Parkway” through his district. The Chicago Tribune describes it as a “pet project” of Hastert’s that will “cut through valuable farmland and increase suburban sprawl.” President Bush comes to IL-14 to sign the bill. Here’s a picture:

Here’s an overlay of Hastert’s property and the new highway, shown in green. The highway is just 5.5 miles away:

The “Prairie Parkway” transforms the Hastert property from an isolated parcel to one with convenient access to major cities.

December 2005: Hastert sells property to the Robert Arthur Land Company, who plans to builds 1500 homes on the property. Hastert earns at least $1.5 million in profit. His two partners makes another 1.5 million.

May 2006: The Kendall County Board votes “in favor of putting an interchange on Galena Road, giving residents of the new development easy access to the highway.”

TODAY: Hastert’s spokesman claims, “None of the properties purchased by the speaker are near enough to the Prairie Parkway to be affected by the proposed highway.”

UPDATE: Using Google Earth a commenter at the Sunlight Foundation concludes that the distance between the entrance to the highway and the Hastert development is 2.6 miles. (Hastert’s spokesman says it’s 5.5 miles.)

Opera Software on Tuesday released the newest version of its popular browser, which is designed to offer several improvements over its predecessors.

Opera 9, which had been in beta since April, includes features designed to improve the efficiency of Web surfing, enhance security and allow users greater control over the content they view.

Opera 9 aims to allow users to relaunch their browser where they last left off, as well as block advertisements on a site-specific basis. Other content-related features include widgets, or small Web programs, designed to help users organize their browsing preferences, play games or follow sports teams.

A security bar has also been added to Opera 9, a response to the prevalence of phishing scams and identity theft. The security bar aims to reduce users' encounters with phishing scams and also includes technology to strengthen blocking of pop-up advertisements.

Opera 9 also offers a thumbnail feature, which enables users to mouse over an open tab to see a thumbnail preview of the page

Opera 9, which is offered as a free download, runs on a variety of platforms, from Windows to Mac to Linux. It also supports BitTorrent's file distribution technology.

"For Opera 9, we worked hard to push the limits of what people expect from a Web browser," Jon von Tetzchner, Opera Software chief executive, said in a statement.

MADRID (Reuters) - Hundreds of nude cyclists pedaled around Spanish cities on Saturday to protest against car-clogged streets and demand greater respect for pollution-free transport.

With slogans like "one car less" and "bio methanol" painted on their backs, the naked cyclists staged Spain's third annual Ciclonudista or "Nudecycle" in Madrid, Barcelona and Pamplona.

The protest was part of world-wide naked bike riding events on Saturday across Europe, North America and South America.

"We feel naked when up against traffic because people don't see the bicycle as just another means of transport," said Madrid cyclist Ramon Linaza, wearing only a cycle helmet and shoes.

Towing cardboard cars with gaping jaws, protesters said the rapid rise of automobile ownership in Spain was turning city streets into ever more hostile and dangerous cycling territory.

Organizers said the bicycle was a healthy and efficient form of urban transport that is largely ignored by Spanish drivers and city planners.

Central Madrid has few bike paths and cyclists are a rarity on its streets. Barcelona has the most bike paths of any Spanish city, according to cycling activists.

Per capita car ownership has rocketed in Spain after a decade of strong economic growth.

Scientists on the hunt for how dodo died

Scientists in Mauritius have launched a project to discover why the giant dodo bird became extinct.

Most theories blame settlers who found the plump flightless bird on the Indian Ocean island in the 16th century and began to hunt it relentlessly.

In an attempt to provide a scientific answer, the Dodo Research Program plans to study fossils from a mass dodo grave unearthed in southern Mauritius last October and an adjacent site, using carbon dating techniques and DNA analysis.

The aim is to understand the dodo's world in the 10,000 years before humans discovered Mauritius, then to determine the impact human colonisers had when they arrived.

"The research aims to reconstruct the world of the dodo and determine the factors of its demise," said Kenneth Rijsdijk, one of the project's scientists.

"What did the dodo-ecosystem look like? How did the human colonists live and how did they use the environment?"

The dodo may have already been in decline long before humans turned up, he added.

Mauritius was first settled by Portuguese sailors and colonised by Dutch settlers in the 17th century, which is when it died out.

Unaccustomed to predators, the dodo lacked fear of the human settlers who hunted it and destroyed the forests that provided its habitat.

Passing ships also brought rats, which ate the bird eggs located in nests on the ground.

If I were in Bill Gates' office right now wondering how I'd deal with Google, one of my first proposals would be to take a deep look at why Technorati is succeeding in the marketplace on Google's home turf: search.

Technorati has taken quite a bit of my search time away from Google and Live.com.

Why is that? Well, Google has the same disease that Microsoft has: it can't see small things.

Blog search is a small thing.

Not enough users to get product managers at Microsoft or Google excited. Instead they look at the big audiences and the big money.

I can just hear Eric Schmidt at Google telling his troops: "let's go after Microsoft, cause that's where the money and users are."

And I can hear Bill Gates at our offices telling us "let's go after Search, cause that's where the money and the users are."

In the meantime Technorati is sticking its tongue out at both of us saying "you suckers, you can't see the small things and the small things are important."

Technorati is a proof case that Google is vulnerable on search.

Now, it's up to us to start seeing the small things. Give Dave Sifry a call. He'll show the way. Tom Foremski of ZDNet sees it.

But the finding promises an amazing new treatment for infants, boys, and men who suffer penis disfigurement. The replacement organ would be grown on a penis-shaped matrix seeded with cells from the patient's own body.

Researcher Anthony Atala, MD, director of the Institute for Regenerative Medicine at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, reported the findings at this week’s annual meeting of the American Urological Association in Atlanta.

"Our goal is eventually to treat infants and adults with birth defects, penis trauma, or penis cancer," Atala tells WebMD. "But this is a future goal. We are now deciding which animal model to explore next."

While human trials are still far off, the Atala team's recent accomplishments make their goal highly credible. Atala and colleagues recently reported successfully using much the same technique to replace defective bladders in human children with spina bifida.

In the rabbit study, Atala's team removed the penises from rabbits and entirely replaced the organs with penises grown from the animal's own cells.

Atala says the new penises have blood vessels and nerves that allow them to become fully functional. Indeed, the replacement penises worked like a charm. The rabbits were able to get erections, mate with females, and get females pregnant with normal, healthy pups.
