There are more fatal traffic accidents during the Fourth of July weekend than any other weekend of the year. More than 400 Americans are expected to die on the highways over the holiday weekend.
July fourth is typically the worst day of the year for traffic fatalities. Although data from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety shows July fourth is the deadliest day to travel, six of the 10 days with the most deaths were also holidays or near holidays. July 2 and July 3 are also in the top 10 worst days to travel.
Also, more motorcyclists are killed on July fourth than any other day.
As you might have guessed, with the weekend barbeques and drinking, 41 percent of the deaths on July fourth involved people with high blood alcohol concentrations, as did 51 percent of the deaths on January first.
For the first time since 9/11, the Statue of Liberty's crown will re-open, starting Saturday, July Fourth.
The National Park Service denies the closing had anything to do with terrorism and says the statue's interior was in need of repair anyway. Tickets for the July Fourth weekend have already sold out. (Maiman)
The recession has sent a new type of customer to Wal-Mart and now the retailer is doing everything possible to keep them shopping there.
It's the customer making a higher income. Wal-Mart is redesigning hundreds of stores to give them cleaner, wider aisles, fresh color schemes and better lighting. It's also beginning to carry more brand names and it's improving its electronics department.
In this tough economy, Wal-Mart says it's seeing more customers who are financially better off but looking for bargains. Those shoppers spend, on average, 40 percent more than traditional lower income shoppers and the company wants to keep those high-end customers coming back.
