"We are not trying to go against the Lenten tradition here because whipping has somewhat already become some form of atonement for sins for some of us," Health Secretary Francisco Duque the 3rd said.

The festival is sponsored by Coca-cola and a company called Smart Telecommunications.

One of the most startling discoveries of the last 15 years has been the extent of sexual infidelity (scientists call it "extra-pair copulations" or EPCs) among animals long thought to be monogamous.

Because sperm are produced in vast numbers, with little if any required parental follow-through, males of most species are aggressive sexual adventurers, inclined to engage in sex with multiple partners when they can. Males who succeed in doing so leave more descendants.

Internet addiction a real mental illness? Give me a break!

Compulsive e-mailing and text messaging could soon become classified as an official brain illness.

An editorial in this month’s issue of the American Journal of Psychiatry says Internet addiction — including "excessive gaming, sexual pre-occupations and e-mail/text messaging" — is a common compulsive-impulsive disorder that should be added to psychiatry’s official guidebook of mental disorders.

Like other addicts, users experience cravings, urges, withdrawal and tolerance, requiring more and better equipment and software, or more and more hours online, according to Dr. Jerald Block, a psychiatrist at the Oregon Health and Science University in Portland. Dr. Block says people can lose all track of time or neglect "basic drives," like eating or sleeping. Relapse rates are high, he writes, and some people may need psychoactive medications or hospitalization.

The person is predisposed to addiction.

The first modern humans had something Neanderthals didn't. About 30,000 years ago, our Neanderthal neighbors died off while we survived. Scientists are unsure what gave us an edge, but new research could help narrow down the possibilities.

A team of anthropologists has compared measurements of Neanderthal skulls to modern human skulls, and argues that most variations among them are the result of random changes that occur over time, and not of adaptations driven by natural selection.

"We're actually saying that the differences between modern humans' skulls and Neanderthals' are not due to changes that increased people's ability to survive and reproduce," said researcher Tim Weaver, an anthropologist at the University of California, Davis. "Whatever advantages humans had over Neanderthals didn’t have to do with the size and shape of the cranium."

other words, modern humans don't seem to have developed skeletal adaptations that gave them better eyesight, hearing or smell than Neanderthals.

Old-school bOING bOING pal Jim Leftwich points to startling new high definition video of the moon released by the Japanese Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) and NHK. The images were taken by the lunar explorer Kaguya on Halloween. Breathtaking. I would love to see this footage at full resolution on a huge screen. From JAXA:

...It is the world's first high definition image data acquisition of the Moon from an altitude about 100 kilometers away from the Moon.

The image taking was performed twice on October 31. Both were eight-fold speed intermittent shooting (eight minutes is converged to one minute.) The first shooting covered from the northern area of the "Oceanus Procellarum" toward the center of the North Pole, then the second one was from the south to the north on the western side of the "Oceanus Procellarum." The moving image data acquired by the KAGUYA was received at the JAXA Usuda Deep Space Center, and processed by NHK.

clipper's remarks: A musical score described as a requiem was found by Giovanni Pala, when he drew the five lines of a musical 'Staff' and assigned notes to the hands and the bread. Da Vinci was an accomplished lyre player, and liked puzzles. I can imagine him laughing that it took someone so long to find. Still it would have been obvious to him, and one person's music can be another's noise.

Nov. 9, 2007 -- A real da Vinci code is indeed hidden within Leonardo's "The Last Supper," according to a book to be published in Italy next week.

But rather than conspiracy theories, the new code points to a hidden musical score, a sacred text and a three-dimensional chalice.

"This is not another spin-off of Dan Brown's novel. It's real," musician Giovanni Maria Pala told Discovery News in an exclusive interview. "I've always been intrigued by the possibility of finding a (piece of) music in the Last Supper, but I would have never imagined to find myself decoding a secret message by Leonardo."

Indeed, Leonardo was an accomplished lyre player who also enjoyed hiding puzzles in his work.

Pala, who will publish his findings next week in the book "La Musica Celata" (which translates to "The Hidden Music") claims to have discovered nothing less than a sacred hymn and text

with mystic symbols in da Vinci's degraded masterpiece.

Looking at single details wasn't the correct approach," Pala said.

The caffeine and taurine with their diuretic effect can make the drinker thirsty. While the effects were considered to be of more concern for people with already high blood pressure and heart problems, the volumes that are consumed, and the likely continued use warrants more study. There is the chance that benefits can be seen from the studies. For example they could be used in cases of low blood pressure.

High-caffeine soft drinks may do more than give people a jolt of energy. They may also boost heart rates and blood pressure levels, researchers say.

The results of a small study prompted the researchers to advise people who have high blood pressure or heart disease to avoid energy drinks because they could impact their blood pressure or change the effectiveness of their medications.

The drinks generally have high levels of caffeine and taurine, an amino acid found in protein-rich foods like meat and fish that can affect heart function and blood pressure, the researchers say.

"We saw increases in both blood pressure and heart rate in healthy volunteers who were just sitting in a chair watching movies. They weren't exercising. They were in a resting state," says James Kalus of Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, who led the study.

The increases did not rise to dangerous levels in the group of 15 healthy volunteers, whose average age was 26, the researchers say.

Doctors began operating on a 2-year-old girl born with four arms and four legs Tuesday in an extensive surgery that they hope will leave the girl with a normal body, a hospital official said.

The girl is joined to a "parasitic twin" that stopped developing in the mother's womb. The surviving fetus absorbed the limbs, kidneys and other body parts of the undeveloped fetus.

The girl, Lakshmi, is named after the four-armed Hindu goddess of wealth, and some in her village in the northern state of Bihar revere her as a goddess.

Others sought to make money from her. Her parents, Shambhu and Poonam, hid her after a circus apparently

tried to buy the girl, according to a report in the Hindustan Times. The members of the family only go by their first names.

"We have high hopes of everything going fine and everything is going fine now," Mamatha said.

The hospital's foundation is paying for the operation

A team of 30 doctors was participating in the surgery.
