Soldiers reported that the gunman shouted "Allahu Akbar!" — an Arabic phrase for "God is great!" — before opening fire Thursday, said Lt. Gen. Robert Cone, the base commander. He said officials had not confirmed Hasan made the comment.

Army Chief of Staff George Casey said he asked bases around the country to assess their security. He also said he was worried about a backlash against the thousands of Muslim soldiers serving dutifully in uniform.

Law enforcement officials said they are trying to confirm if Hasan wrote Internet postings that include his name about suicide bombings and other threats, equating suicide bombers to soldiers who throw themselves on a grenade to save the life of fellow soldiers.

Gay marriage is a civil rights issue, and that means it’s a black issue, too.

This is a national scandal, but it moves the issue to the forefront again and gives the African-American community a chance to reaffirm its support for equal rights by supporting gay marriage. Black communities have a long, sad history of homophobia which has led many black people to oppose same-sex marriage, sometimes on religious or moral grounds. But after having served as the moral conscience of the nation during the long struggle for justice and equal rights in the last century, black Americans cannot be absent from, or take the wrong side in, this latest struggle for basic human rights.

$2.5 Billion: Year-To-Date Lobbying Sets New Record

The Center for Responsive Politics reports that total federal lobbying expenditures topped $849 million in the third quarter, setting a new record since firms began filing reports quarterly.

CRP reports that the total year-to-date spending is now a staggering $2.5 billion. Compare that with the $2.43 billion spent during all of 2005.

The health sector is the year's top lobbying spender, pouring $396 million to lobbying federal lawmakers on health care reform since January -- an increase of six percent compared to the same period last year.

Ranking behind the health sector is the miscellaneous business sector, which includes the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. The group spent a staggering $363 million during the first nine months of the year.

Photographs of the first lady descending the steps of Air Force One in shorts have the media in a sweat. Some are saying Mrs. Obama— on her way to the Grand Canyon for a family vacation — may have revealed too much skin.

"I thought the fact that she wore shorts was newsworthy because she's the first first lady to wear shorts on Air Force One," Strzemien said. "I was interested as a newsperson because it was a first. A lot of things the Obamas have done have been firsts."

Whitney set for Oprah interview

Singer Whitney Houston is to appear on the Oprah Winfrey Show, giving her first full-length interview in almost seven years.

The 46-year-old will be the first guest of the US chat show's new series on 14 September to promote her new album, I Look to You.

On her website, Winfrey called the star's appearance "the most anticipated music interview of the decade".

Houston's last TV interview was in 2002 with ABC's Diane Sawyer.
