Police Say Maryland Woman Tried to Cut Out Unborn Baby

SUITLAND, Md. — A 29-year-old homeless woman has given birth to a baby girl after, police said, she was befriended by a Maryland woman who held her captive for several days and tried to cut the baby from her womb.

Officer Michelle Reedy, a spokeswoman for Prince George's County police, said 40-year-old Veronica Deramous of Suitland, Md., has been charged with attempted first-degree murder, false imprisonment and other related charges. Police said Deramous befriended Teka Adams at a southeast Washington homeless shelter and persuaded her to come to her apartment on Dec. 1 with a promise of baby clothes and other items for the unborn child.

Once there, Reedy said, Deramous bound the woman, who was in her third trimester. Days later, the woman escaped after Deramous tried to cut the unborn baby from her body, Reedy said.

Official: Police kill suspect in cop shootings

Report: Ex-con wanted over coffee shop slayings is shot in Seattle street

SEATTLE - Seattle police have fatally shot the suspect in the slayings of four police officers, an official said Tuesday.

Pierce County sheriff's spokesman Ed Troyer said Maurice Clemmons, 37, was shot early Tuesday in a Seattle neighborhood.

Clemmons had been wanted in connection with the gunning down four police officers at a coffee shop Sunday morning in Lakewood, a suburb about 35 miles south of Seattle.

Citing a police source, The Seattle Times reported Clemmons was standing outside in South Kenyon Street when he was confronted by officers. The source said Clemmons challenged the officers and was shot around 2:40 a.m. local time.

Troyer said Seattle police found Clemmons after Pierce County authorities supplied addresses of possible hiding spots.

Evangelist Tony Alamo Sentenced to 175 Years for Taking Girls Across State Lines for Sex

Evangelist Tony Alamo was sentenced Friday to 175 years in prison for taking little girls as young as 9 across state lines to have sex with them.

The decision punishes him for the rest of his life for molesting children he took as "brides" in his ministry.

During Friday's hearing in Texarkana, Ark., some of Alamo's victims testified about how their families were destroyed while the evangelist took over their lives.

"You preyed on innocent children," she said staring down Alamo, who wore yellow prison scrubs and a windbreaker for the hearing.

"You have the audacity to ask for mercy. What mercy did you show us?" she said.

A moment later she asked, "What kind of man of God does what you have done?"

Two other child brides testified. One, who said she is now employed full-time and has a life of her own outside of the ministry, said she hoped Alamo would spend the rest of his life in jail.

Father, 4 Sons Charged in Missouri Child Rape Case

In what investigators are calling a "horrendous" case of child abuse, five members of a Missouri family — a father and his four adult sons — are being charged with a host of shocking crimes against children as young as 11 years old.

Burrell Edward Mohler Sr., 77, and his sons were charged with committing numerous crimes, including child rape, sodomy and using a child in a sexual performance.

Police said Wednesday they were searching for more potential victims, including possible bodies on land owned by the family. Five victims have been located, but the number "could possibly expand," said Cpl. Bill Lowe of the Missouri highway patrol. He said all of the victims were under the age of 12 when they were molested.

The woman said she was forced to have an abortion when she was 11 years old and that she and her four sisters were forced to participate in mock marriage ceremonies before the men had sex with them, according to court documents.

KORSOER, Denmark – The world's largest cruise ship cleared a crucial obstacle Sunday, lowering its smokestacks to squeeze under a bridge in Denmark.

The Oasis of the Seas — which rises about 20 stories high — passed below the Great Belt Fixed Link with a slim margin as it left the Baltic Sea on its maiden voyage to Florida.

Bridge operators said that even after lowering its telescopic smokestacks the giant ship had less than a 2-foot (half-meter) gap.

Company officials are banking that its novelty will help guarantee its success. Five times larger than the Titanic, the $1.5 billion ship has seven neighborhoods, an ice rink, a small golf course and a 750-seat outdoor amphitheater. It has 2,700 cabins and can accommodate 6,300 passengers and 2,100 crew members.

Colorado Couple Allegedly Killed 3-Year-Old Girl, Dumped Her in Trash

DENVER — A woman and her boyfriend pleaded not guilty to charges of first-degree murder and child abuse in the death of the woman's 3-year-old daughter, who was found in a trash bag.

Miriam Gallegos and Angel Ray Montoya entered their pleas Friday.

Prosecutors say Montoya killed the child while Gallegos was at work then the couple conspired to cover the crime by disposing of the body in a ravine in September 2007.

The couple told authorities the girl was missing.

Authorities say the child died of asphyxiation.

Montoya faces charges of first-degree murder and child abuse resulting in death, while Gallegos faces charges of accessory to a crime and child abuse resulting in death.

Is the nuclear material at Los Alamos safe from an earthquake?

Los Alamos National Laboratory conducts much of the nation's nuclear security research, and a new study has found that the plutonium facility may not be equipped to safely ride out an earthquake.

The lab, situated about 56 kilometers outside of Santa Fe, N.M., has long been known to be on a fault line, and builders have installed substantial fire safety measures. But recent planning for a new structure revealed that the fault could move much more than previously assumed, revealing a crack in the lab's safety plans, the Los Angeles Times reported.

The Defense Nuclear Facilities Safety Board submitted a letter on Monday to Department of Energy (DOE) Secretary Steven Chu, highlighting "the need to execute both immediate and long-term actions that can reduce the risk posed a seismic event."

HELSINKI - The world's largest cruise liner began its maiden voyage on Friday, gliding out from a shipyard in Finland and heading to Florida, with an amphitheater, basketball courts and an ice rink on board.

The 16-deck Oasis of the Seas spans 1,200 feet (360 meters) from bow to stern. Its 2,700 cabins can accommodate 6,300 passengers and 2,100 crew.

Commissioned by Royal Caribbean International, the ship cost $1.5 billion and took two and a half years to build at the STX Finland Oy shipyard in Turku, southwestern Finland.

The liner has four swimming pools, volleyball and basketball courts, and a youth zone with theme parks and nurseries for children. There is also an ice rink that seats 780 spectators and a small-scale golf course.

Cop Pulls Gun on Chain-Saw-Wielding Haunted House Worker, Authorities Say

BALTIMORE — Authorities say a Baltimore city police officer pulled his gun on a chain-saw-wielding haunted house worker who was trying to get "one last scream" out of him.

Baltimore County police say Sgt. Eric Janik was been charged with assault for pulling his service weapon on the worker, who was dressed up as the killer from "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

Police say the employee approached Janik after the haunted house tour was over Sunday night. Police say Janik pulled his service weapon and pointed it at the man's chest. The man dropped the chain saw, which had no chain and was not dangerous.

Charging documents show that Janik smelled of alcohol and told different stories about what he did with the gun.

Janik has been suspended with pay, pending a formal suspension hearing.

D.A.: Mother's Behavior 'Outrageous' in Alleged Drunken Car Crash

NEW YORK — A mother accused of drunkenly causing a high-speed wreck managed to pull her own 11-year-old daughter from the mangled, overturned car as another girl lay dying on the roadside, prosecutors said Friday.

He said she played a morbid guessing game as she sped up a highway at nearly 70 mph, asking her young passengers to raise their hands if they thought they would crash.

Morgenthau called Huertas' behavior "outrageous" as he announced that she was indicted on charges including manslaughter, assault and driving under the influence of alcohol. She remains hospitalized with a shoulder injury; her arraignment isn't expected until mid-November.

Huertas drove off after midnight, teasing and terrifying the children, according to prosecutors and a survivor's family. The relatives have said she ignored pleas from the girls — including her 11-year-old daughter, Brittany Gonzalez — to slow down.

Will 'Balloon' Parents Get to Keep Their Kids?

While authorities investigate the family accused of perpetrating the balloon boy hoax to promote a reality show, questions are being raised about whether or not the couple's three kids should be taken away.

Lee Christian, the lawyer hired by Mayumi Heene to represent her, said neither he nor his client has been contacted by authorities about whether the couple's children might be taken from them.

The sheriff's office said its findings will be forwarded to prosecutors next week to decide if Richard and Mayumi Heene should be charged with falsely reporting that their 6-year-old child had drifted away in a large home-built helium balloon to drum up publicity for a reality TV show.

Wendy Murphy, a former prosecutor told CBS News Monday that, "all they have to have is evidence of neglect or abuse."

"And boy, I think they've got plenty of that here," she said.

Once it's decided if charges will be filed, is likely when the kids' fate will be determined
