"People went to a Dead show for a positive inner experience and to be with other people like them. It's not something you see too often anymore. Concerts are usually just reproductions of albums or music videos - nothing really original happening. It's more a mass fan experience. Deadheads weren't fans, they were part of the experience," he added.

Arctic Monkeys shiver at Live Earth 'hypocrisy'

Rock group Arctic Monkeys have become the latest music industry stars to question whether the performers taking part in Live Earth on Saturday are suitable climate change activists.

"Especially when we're using enough power for 10 houses just for (stage) lighting. It'd be a bit hypocritical," he told AFP in an interview before a concert in Paris.

Bass player Nick O'Malley chimes in: "And we're always jetting off on aeroplanes!"

Not ONE Member of the Bush Extended Family Has Served in Iraq! Not One! Take a Look.

Yet, not one -- not one -- of any of Bush's children or his nieces and nephews have volunteered for service in any branch of the military or volunteered to serve in any capacity in Iraq. Not one of them has felt the cause was noble enough to put his or her life on the line.

Same for Cheney's family.

New York museum recreates Summer of Love (minus the drugs)

NEW YORK (AFP) - Forty years after a generation of young Americans turned on, tuned in, and dropped out during the Summer of Love, a New York museum is hoping to recreate the psychedelic intensity of the period.

The exhibition includes several darkened rooms playing light shows of trippy psychedelic patterns and gently rising lava lamp-style swirls, to a soundtrack of Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix and the Beatles.

You know it's true. All this hot enthusiasm for healing the planet and eating whole foods and avoiding chemicals and working with nature and developing the self? Came from the hippies. Alternative health? Hippies. Green cotton? Hippies. Reclaimed wood? Recycling? Humane treatment of animals? Medical pot? Alternative energy? Natural childbirth? Non-GMO seeds? It came from the granola types (who, of course, absorbed much of it from ancient cultures), from the alternative worldviews, from the underground and the sidelines and from far off the goddamn grid and it's about time the media, the politicians, the culture as a whole sent out a big, wet, hemp-covered apology.

wind. rain. sun. they've taken him apart. he's hunched. his skin is flaking in large leafs. his voice is gravelly.

but there's a flair that seems buried. he shows where he lives with a wave of his arm. pointing off and about, "the streets."

his name is dennis. he's from indiana. he came to the bay area years back. he got stationed at fort ord near monterey when he was in the army in the early 70s. he never left.

"do you have family here or in indiana?" i ask

"we're all family" he replies

God bless America: land of the free, home of the brave – and litigators. I sue, you sue, we all sue – and the sillier the cause, the better. Frivolous lawsuits are the stuff of television shows like Philly and Boston Public. But that’s fiction, right? You think.

A woman in Florida has sued her employers for developing carpal tunnel syndrome – also known as repetitive motion injury – in both hands. Why should this make news? It’s a common occupational hazard for data entry operators and others who spend all day typing on a keyboard. Right, except the lady in question is no data entry operator and she didn’t get her tendons in a twist from too much typing. She got it from too much masturbating.

PULLMAN, Wash. (AP) - A man who reportedly said he has "a problem" was charged with theft and burglary after police said they found 93 pounds of women's panties, brassieres and other underwear at his home in this college town.

A man was seen taking underwear from two laundry rooms Saturday, a witness recorded his license number, Flaherty was identified from a photographic montage and police found enough underwear to fill five garbage bags in his bedroom, Tennant said.

"He said he had a problem," Tennant said.

Soldier's dad tells Bush, `This war is wrong'

The two-page letter is signed from the “proud father of a fallen soldier.”

The letter says, “You have succeeded in taking down over 3,100 of our best young men, my son being one of them. Kevin told me many times we are not fighting terrorism in Iraq and they could not do their jobs as soldiers. He said they are trained to be on the offensive and to fight, but all they are doing is acting like policemen….

NEW YORK, March 19 A New York Times investigation published Monday claims just 2 percent of funds Shriners raised in 2005 went to operate their charitable hospitals.

In interviews with current and former members of the Masonic order, the newspaper reported more than 57 percent of the $32 million the group raised in 2005 through circuses, bingo games and raffles went to costs of the fraternity.

''Money raised for the hospitals is being used to pay for parties and liquor and trips and they know it,'' said Johnny Edwards, a former leader of Oasis Shrine in Charlotte, N.C. ''The way I see it, they are stealing from crippled children.''

If You're Going To Kill Your Spouse, You Probably Shouldn't Google 'How To Commit Murder'

Back in 2005, we noted that your Google searches can be used against you in a court of law, after a man who searched on Google for "neck snap break" just before his wife was murdered, saw that evidence presented at his trial. The latest is that a woman is accused of searching for a variety of incriminating phrases days before her husband was murdered. Among the searches were "How to Commit Murder," "instant poisons," "undetectable poisons," and "fatal digoxin doses." She also researched various gun laws in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. A week and a half later, her husband was murdered using a gun bought in Pennsylvania (and soon after the woman had obtained a prescription for a well-known "date rape" drug). Whether or not the woman is actually guilty, it is a reminder that your Google searches can (and probably will) be used against you, if you happen to research your crimes that way.

Priests to Purify Site After Bush Visit

Mayan priests will purify a sacred archaeological site to eliminate "bad spirits" after President Bush visits next week, an official with close ties to the group said Thursday.

"That a person like (Bush), with the persecution of our migrant brothers in the United States, with the wars he has provoked, is going to walk in our sacred lands, is an offense for the Mayan people and their culture," Juan Tiney, the director of a Mayan nongovernmental organization with close ties to Mayan religious and political leaders, said Thursday.

Iximche, 30 miles west of the capital of Guatemala City, was founded as the capital of the Kaqchiqueles kingdom before the Spanish conquest in 1524.

When Vermont Governor Jim Douglas, a Republican with reasonably close ties to President Bush, asked if there was any additional business to be considered at the town meeting he was running in Middlebury, Ellen McKay popped up and proposed the impeachment of Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney.

But McKay, a program coordinator at Middlebury College, pressed her case. And it soon became evident that the crowd at the annual meeting shared her desire to hold the president to account.

"It became clear that no one was going home until they had the chance to discuss the resolutions and vote on them," explained David Rosenberg, a political science professor at Middlebury College. "And being a good politician, he allowed the vote to happen."

By an overwhelming voice vote, Middlebury called for impeachment.
