Obama’s inauguration affects user traffic

One of the most interesting parts of running a large website is watching the effects of unrelated events affecting user traffic in aggregate.

John Allspaw recently created a WebOps Visualizations group on Flickr for sharing these kinds of graphs with the confidential information removed. Here’s an example of a traffic drop seen both by Flickr & by Last.FM that coincided with President Obama’s inauguration.

Seam carving, otherwise known as content aware image resizing, is one of the most impressive features available in the latest version of Photoshop. Basically what it does is allow you to change the aspect ratio of an image, while avoiding the drawbacks of cropping or scaling, where parts of the image can be lost or distorted. Moreover, it's possible to manually define protected areas in which pixels may not be removed or conversely designate pixels that must be deleted.

the algorithm was developed by Shai Avidan and Ariel Shamir and presented at SIGGRAPH in 2007. In fact, the technique has since shown up in a number of other applications, one of which is Seam Carving GUI. This freeware application doesn't require installation and is fairly easy to use: just load an image, select the area you want to keep or remove when resizing, and select the target size.

CES 2009: SD Association Announces 2TB Memory Card Standard for Phones

Two terabytes of data in your phone? Seriously? That's what the SD Association announced today. The new SDXC card standard supports sizes up to 2TB, with data transfer speeds up to 104 MB/sec and potential future speeds up to 300 MB/sec. The SDXC specification will be released in the first quarter of 2009, the association says, which means that cards may come out by the end of the year.

"Big" SDXC cards will fit into digital cameras and music players. But the most amazing part of this news is that SDXC even applies to the sort of "micro" cards that go in cell phones.

How do you file away 2 TB of data on a flash card? The SDXC standard will use the Microsoft exFAT file system (aka FAT64), which extends the venerable FAT file system to handle file sizes greater than 4 GB and more than 1000 files per directory.

Remember the SlotMusic Player? Similar idea and concept, SanDisk announces the slotRadio. This whole idea of very easy to use / ready to go digital music is what the “slot” genre players are all about. The slotRadio is $100 and comes with 1,000 Billboard Chart songs hand selected separated into various genres. The user will simply select the type of music on the player’s 1.5” OLED screen.

Additional cards can be purchased for around $40 each with 1000 songs of a specific genre.
