Ancient Roman city found off Libyan coast

Italian archaeologists have discovered the remains of an ancient Roman city submerged off the coast of Libya.

The remains of the city date back to the 2nd century A.D. and were found by archaeologists and experts from Sicily and the University Suor Orsola Benincasa of Naples, involved in the ArCoLibia archaeology project.

The discovery took place on the Cape of Ras Eteen on the western side of Libya’s Gulf of Bumbah, as archaeologists were searching the area for shipwrecks and the remains of ancient ports.

Archaeologists instead found walls, streets, and the remains of buildings and ancient tombs. After a careful analysis, the experts realised the area extended for over a hectare.

According to a statement released by Sicilian authorities, the city flourished through the manufacture of imperial dye, a purple pigment used to colour the clothing of the Roman elite.

The dye was very expensive in Roman times.

Medieval shipyard discovered on Skye

Evidence of a medieval shipyard has been discovered on the Isle of Skye, which lies in the Inner Hebrides islands of Scotland.

Archaeologists have discovered a man made stone quay at Loch na h-Àirde inn the southwest portion of the island, which would have been used to help keep water in the loch. Furthermore, two boat timbers were also discovered, with one of them having been radio-carbon-dated to around 1100.

"One timber was from a boat up to 35ft long, probably a coastal vessel The other was was from a 20ft clinker buolt boat, similar to those still used in the area today."

The dam, which now crumbled and lies below the waterline, would have been able to retain water at high tides in order to keep the loch full, with ships made in it floated out at high tide. Dr Martin said the canal is about 100 yards long.

"We have also found a stone built quay just inside the loch, now under water, so it was quite a sophisticated arrangement of features."

Astronomers have taken the first pictures of one of the hottest stars in the Galaxy. The temperature on its surface is 200,000C, 35 times hotter than the Sun.

The mysterious dying star at the heart of the Bug Nebula – 3,500 light years away in the constellation Scorpius – has never been seen before as it is hidden behind a cloud of dust and ice.

The images were taken to show off the capabilities of the Hubble Space Telescope after it began work again in September. The astronomers were amazed to discover the hidden star.

Cezary Szyszka, a research student currently working at the European Southern Observatory, said: "We are extremely lucky that we had the opportunity to catch this star near its hottest point. From now on it will gradually cool as it dies. This is truly an exceptional object."

Nicolas Sarkozy's 'Life in France' video shot in US

President Nicolas Sarkozy's UMP party was left red-faced after it emerged last night that its promotional video showing the joys of the French way of life was shot in America.

A voice-over boasts about Mr Sarkozy's achievements since 2007, and the benefits of living in France.

The family house used in the video is in Escondido, California - and UMP party bosses even failed to spot that a car parked outside it has US number plates

The class of happy schoolchildren from a mix of ethnic backgrounds live in Oshkosh, Wisconsin.

And the mother with her child in the garden is really in Cambria, California, Canal+ said.

"The images are all very pretty, but they are nothing to do with this country."

A spokesman at the UMP party headquarters said he could not comment on the latest blunder.

Health perks for the unemployed

For a limited time, those who are unemployed and without health insurance can take advantage of freebies like flu shots, check ups and prescription drugs.

For those who say they cannot afford or cannot access health insurance, there is a welcome reprieve in the form of health-related freebies from the government and a few private companies. The primary requirement: proof of unemployment.

Locations can be found on the department of Health and Human Services' Web site.

Take Care Recovery Plan, which allows job seekers to get free health care services at Take Care Clinics until the end of the year.

Royal Society Publishes Rare Scientific Studies Online

The Royal Society said on Monday that historic manuscripts by Sir Isaac Newton, Benjamin Franklin and other groundbreaking scientists would be published online for the first time.

The interactive site, which is being called “Trailblazing,” contains 60 articles chosen from among the 60,000 that have appeared in the Royal Society's journals.

A gruesome account of a 17th-century blood transfusion will be published on the site, as well as Newton’s theory on light and colors in the 1600s -- that continues to provide the basis for theoretical physics.

Also appearing on the site will be a paper by Benjamin Franklin, one of the founding fathers of the United States, which detailed his experiment to fly his kite in a storm to prove that lightning is electricity rather than a supernatural force.

Lion opens family's car door with his teeth

The lion may have appeared wild, but it had clearly learnt one or two things about cars after years of watching curious visitors drive past.

As the white Toyota came to a halt in the Lion Safari Park in Johannesburg, it slowly padded over while the family inside watched in excitement, unaware of what was about to happen.

Thier glee turned to horror as the 300lb lion firmly took the rear door handle with his teeth and pulled it open in one deft movement.

For several seconds the car remained still while the occupants digested the shock of what had happened before finally hitting the accelerator and driving off.

As they fled, the lion followed in pursuit until it reached the gates of the enclosure. There it was finally held back by a warden who hurled stones to shoo it back.
