A young fellow was about to be married and was asking his grandfather about sex. He asked how often you should have it.

Later on, sex tapers off and you have it once a week or so.

We wrote before about new trend of making art statements and sculptures out of used books (see our Part 1). Some readers complained that they abhor the idea of cutting up books, no matter what value the book might still have or what's printed inside. Others suggested quite the opposite: why not donate some used bookstore's inventory to the artists (and even freely ship it to them).

'Intelligent' computers put to the test

Can machines think? That was the question posed by the great mathematician Alan Turing. Half a century later six computers are about to converse with human interrogators in an experiment that will attempt to prove that the answer is yes.

In the Turing test a machine seeks to fool judges into believing that it could be human. The test is performed by conducting a text-based conversation on any subject. If the computer's responses are indistinguishable from those of a human, it has passed the Turing test and can be said to be "thinking".

The test will be carried out by human "interrogators", each sitting at a computer with a split screen: one half will be operated by an unseen human, the other by a program. The interrogators will then begin separate, simultaneous text-based conversations with both of them on any subjects they choose. After five minutes they will be asked to judge which is which. If they get it wrong, or are not sure, the program will have fooled them.

Explanation: How did these layers of red cliffs form on Mars? No one is sure. The northern ice cap on Mars is nearly divided into two by a huge division named Chasma Boreale. No similar formation occurs on Earth. Pictured above, several dusty layers leading into this deep chasm are visible. Cliff faces, mostly facing left but still partly visible from above, appear dramatically red. The light areas are likely water ice. The above image spans about one kilometer near the north of Mars, and the elevation drop from right to left is over a kilometer. One hypothesis relates the formation of Chasma Boreale to underlying volcanic activity.

The Icelandic government has attempted to calm savers, worried that the nation's economy might be in meltdown.

Speaking on TV yesterday, Icelandic prime minister Geir Haarde said that the government was to offer a 100 percent guarantee for all domestic bank customers' savings - and that the financial regulator was to be given greater powers to intervene in the financial firms' affairs. Earlier, trading in the nation's banks was suspended.

Thousands of Britons have taken out savings accounts with the popular Icesave and Kaupthing Edge brands - run by Iceland's Landsbanki and Kaupthing banks respectively. However, the worsening of the credit crunch and the decline of investor confidence in banks has hit the Nordic country hard.

A Muslim cleric in Saudi Arabia has called on women to wear a full veil, or niqab, that reveals only one eye.

The two-eyed look remains too seductive for Sheikh Habadan

Sheikh Muhammad al-Habadan said showing both eyes encouraged women to use eye make-up to look seductive.

The question of how much of her face a woman should cover is a controversial topic in many Muslim societies.

The niqab is more common in Saudi Arabia and the Gulf, but women in much of the Muslim Middle East wear a headscarf which covers only their hair.

Sheikh Habadan, an ultra-conservative cleric who is said to have wide influence among religious Saudis, was answering questions on the Muslim satellite channel al-Majd.

The credit crisis, which has been building slowly for the past year, is now moving so fast that governments around the world are finding it impossible to keep pace.

On Saturday Angela Merkel, the German leader, criticised last week’s decision by the Irish to guarantee all deposits in their leading banks without consulting other European countries. The Irish Government said that the move was forced on it by the threat of a run on one of its banks. Only a day later Ms Merkel was forced to take almost the same action in almost the same circumstances.

Free-piston engine could be twice as fuel efficient as combustion engines

Free-piston engines do away with the crankshaft: the pistons aren't connected to anything. Instead, two opposing pistons just shuttle back and forth inside a chamber. To generate electricity, the pistons could be equipped with rows of magnets that shuttle past metal coils to create an electrical current.

Sandia National Laboratory led by Sandia researcher Peter Van Blarigan that has been testing physical components of free-piston engines which could be 50% efficient. This is about twice as good as current gas combustion engines and about as efficient as fuel cells. Fuel cells are too expensive. He is assembling a complete free-piston engine prototype, a project that he expects to complete within a year.

It is possible to be a good Muslim and a Darwinist at the same time, one of Turkey's devoted supporters of creationism, who earlier defined Darwinism as a �deception of Satan,� said at a press conference Wednesday.

The statement may not at first sound extraordinary. However, it came from controversial cult leader Adnan Oktar, who wrote over 200 books under the pseudonym Harun Yahya to prove that Darwinism was the biggest enemy of humankind and that the theory of evolution was false.

It is possible to be a good Muslim and a Darwinist at the same time,� said Oktar, whose influence over a legion of young devotees peaked in the 1990s, at a makeover press conference Wednesday night.
