Today's photo: Stages of destruction at Shiite holy site in Iraq

These photographs, provided by the Associated Press, show the stages of destruction of the Askariya Shrine in Samarra, Iraq. The top photo was taken in February 2004. The middle one was taken in February 2006.

The bottom photograph was taken earlier today, after saboteurs blew up the two minarets of the revered Shiite shrine, repeating the 2006 attack that shattered its famous golden dome and, some say, unleashed a wave of retaliatory sectarian violence in Iraq.

aking of America (MoA) is a digital library of primary sources in American social history from the antebellum period through reconstruction. The collection is particularly strong in the subject areas of education, psychology, American history, sociology, religion, and science and technology. The collection currently contains approximately 9,500 books and 50,000 journal articles with 19th century imprints. For more details about the project, see About MoA. Making of America is made possible by a grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.

New Additions:25 new volumes were added, many of them focusing on the Civil War. These were items selected for conversion during the second phase in 2000. 33 more volumes focusing on New York City, many with a number of photographs, were added to MoA in April 2005. Digital conversion of the volumes was made possible through a gift from UM alumnus Lawrence Portnoy. The digital conversion of the complete run of the Journal of the United States Association of Charcoal Iron Workers was funded by a generous donation from a Friend of the Library.
