Earth Day is a great time to turn over a new leaf and give that green New Year’s resolution a second chance. It’s an opportunity to do something nice for your community, your health and your planet. Here are seven simple ideas for change.

1. Save time and a lot of paper: Switch to tree-free billing and pay those bills online with the click of a button or an automatic debit. Approximately one billion trees-worth of paper are trashed each year in the U.S., and hard copy bills alone generate almost 700,000 tons of waste and almost two million tons of carbon dioxide. Both you and the planet will be happier without the excess garbage.

Michael Oppenheimer

Michael Oppenheimer is the Albert G. Milbank professor of geosciences and international affairs in the Woodrow Wilson School and the Department of Geosciences at Princeton University. He's also a long-time participant in the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), which won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2007. Here, he shares his views on climate change and how we can do our part.

Q: You say "there's no magic bullet" that's going to get us out of the climate problem, but "a lot of small pieces that can be put together." What pieces are you talking about?

New CO2 Maps Zoom in on Greenhouse Gas Sources

A new, high- resolution, interactive map of U.S. carbon dioxide emissions from fossil fuels has found that the emissions aren't all where we thought.

The increased detail and accuracy of Vulcan will help lawmakers create policies to reduce CO2 emissions while also increasing scientists' understanding of the sources and fate of carbon dioxide, researchers say.

"The high-resolution map from Vulcan also provides a picture of emission sources in a way that the public and policy-makers can understand, which may be helpful in discussing what we will do about the climate problem," Hansen says.

The Vulcan data is available for anyone to download from the Web site at http://www.eas.purdue.edu/carbon/vulcan. Smaller summary data sets that offer a slice of the data and are easier to download also are available for non-scientists on the Vulcan Web site.

The Country of Lakes and Volcanoes

This Envisat image captures the Republic of Nicaragua located in Central America between Honduras to the north, Costa Rica to the south, the Caribbean Sea to the east (right) and the Pacific Ocean to the west.

The Cosiguina Volcano exploded with so much force in 1835 that one third of the crater was blown away and ash was found some 1400 km away in Jamaica and Mexico City. The Cosiguina Lagoon is located within the volcano.

Ganges River Delta

The Ganges River forms an extensive delta where it empties into the Bay of Bengal. The delta is home to most of Bangladesh, one of the world�s most densely populated countries. Roughly 120 million people live on the Ganges Delta under threat of repeated catastrophic floods due to heavy runoff of meltwater from the Himalayas, and due to the intense rainfall during the monsoon season.
