TOP500 Supercomputer Sites

The TOP500 project was started in 1993 to provide a reliable basis for tracking and detecting trends in high-performance computing. Twice a year, a list of the sites operating the 500 most powerful computer systems is assembled and released. The best performance on the Linpack benchmark is used as performance measure for ranking the computer systems. The list contains a variety of information including the system specifications and its major application areas.

The Devil's Dictionary was begun in a weekly paper in 1881, and was continued in a desultory way at long intervals until 1906. In that year a large part of it was published in covers with the title The Cynic's Word Book, a name which the author had not the power to reject or happiness to approve. To quote the publishers of the present work:

"This more reverent title had previously been forced upon him by the religious scruples of the last newspaper in which a part of the work had appeared, with the natural consequence that when it came out in covers the country already had been flooded by its imitators with a score of 'cynic' books -- The Cynic's This, The Cynic's That, and The Cynic's t'Other. Most of these books were merely stupid, though some of them added the distinction of silliness. Among them, they brought the word 'cynic' into disfavor so deep that any book bearing it was discredited in advance of publication."

Meantime, too, some of the enterprising humorists of the country had helped themselves to such parts of the work as served their needs, and many of its definitions, anecdotes, phrases and so forth, had become more or less current in popular speech. This explanation is made, not with any pride of priority in trifles, but in simple denial of possible charges of plagiarism, which is no trifle. In merely resuming his own the author hopes to be held guiltless by those to whom the work is addressed -- enlightened souls who prefer dry wines to sweet, sense to sentiment, wit to humor and clean English to slang.

A conspicuous, and it is hope not unpleasant, feature of the book is its abundant illustrative quotations from eminent poets, chief of whom is that learned and ingenius cleric, Father Gassalasca Jape, S.J., whose lines bear his initials. To Father Jape's kindly encouragement and assistance the author of the prose text is greatly indebted.

What is the Wikimedia Commons?

Wikimedia Commons is a media repository that is created and maintained not by paid-for artists, but by volunteers. Its name "Wikimedia Commons" is derived from that of the umbrella project "Wikimedia" managing all Wikimedia projects and from the plural noun "commons" as its contents are shared by different language versions and different kinds of Wikimedia projects. Thus it provides a central repository for freely licensed photographs, diagrams, animations, music, spoken text, video clips, and media of all sorts that are useful for any Wikimedia project.

Launched on September 7, 2004, Wikimedia Commons hit the 100,000 uploaded media file milestone on May 24, 2005 and currently contains 749,124 files and 41,137 collections (numbers in English notation). More background information about the Wikimedia Commons project itself can be found in the General disclaimer, at the Wikipedia page about Wikimedia Commons and its page in Meta-wiki.

Unlike traditional media repositories Wikimedia Commons is free. Everyone is allowed to copy, use and modify any files here freely as long the source and the authors are credited and as long you release your copies/improvements under the same freedom to others. The Wikimedia Commons database itself and the texts in it are licensed under the GNU Free Documentation License. Welcome to a database full of creative and original ideas. The Creativity Pool is the home of future innovation and tomorrow's most (in)famous inventions. This service is basically free and works like the penny cup next to the cash register. Have a brilliant suggestion or ideas for a new invention? Add it and be rewarded. Looking for inspiration or some great ideas for your business? Just ask. They may already be there. For navigating, please use the tool bar on the left. Here are your options:

1. MAIN MENU

These are the basic fundamentals. The main menu contains an introduction to the Creativity Pool concept, the site rules, a submission form for contributions, an entire post office, an arena for discussions as well as a directory of assorted external links.

2. SEARCH WINDOW

Enter your search terms and press the "Start!" button. Check "all" to receive results containing all keywords, or "any" for a broader search. Place words in quotation marks to search for an entire phrase. With no particular search terms entered, the Creativity Pool will present the newest ideas in the database.

3. THE POOL

Head into the pool and pick your category. If you have cookies enabled on your computer, the pool will be animated. The Creativity Pool is also available in a "no Java" version: turn waves off if they make you sea-sick or your machine is low on resources (or you simply don't have Java VM installed). - Enjoy!
