Desktop Widgets 101

For those of you who don’t know the basics of widgets, or the difference between desktop and web widgets, check out this surprisingly unbiased overview post on the Yahoo Widgets blog where they talk about the pros and cons of the four major desktop widget platforms offered by Yahoo, Microsoft, Google and Apple.

A key factor when deciding which platforms to consider when building a widget is the overall distribution and the ability to build a single widget for desktop and web use. It’s going to be hard to argue against Vista when thinking in those terms, which will very quickly have greater distribution than all of the others combined on the desktop. And Vista widgets also work on Live.com pages. For companies with enough resources, however, building on all four platforms is relatively straightforward.

The post leaves out all of the widget startups, like Fox-backed SpringWidgets. And more are coming soon. Developers should keep an eye on those platforms as well and build to them if and when they gain traction.

Microformats are small and gentle syntactic touch-ups for your web pages.

They have one major purpose: to make your data readable by both man and machine. They are the technical diplomats of the Web; allowing the same piece of data to be shared among many applications and people.

Microformats

A microformat is a simple addition to your regular HTML, using the class, rel, and rev attributes.

Data Conversion Between Microformats and the Semantic Web

Without becoming too technical, the building block of the Semantic Web is RDF. RDF makes statements about a resource (subject-predicate-object); which is essentially what a microformat is (e.g. this data is my age, this link is about me). Given both are readable by machine, and both have the same fundamental model, microformat-data can be easily absorbed into Semantic Web formatted data.

One example is that a university could let its departmental people outwardly publish their bio data in a microformat; but inwardly pull that data into its semantic knowledge base for its internal tools.

'c:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\DirectX for Managed Code\2.0.0.0_x86\Microsoft.DirectX.dll'
 and
'c:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\DirectX for Managed Code\1.0.2902.0\Microsoft.DirectX.Direct3D.dll'

This error message indicates that you are referencing both Managed DirectX 1.1 and Managed DirectX 2.0 in the same project. Since both assemblies contain the Device class (and many others) there is obviously a conflict. Confusion also occurs because Managed DirectX 1.1 has multiple assemblies (.DirectX, .Direct3D, Direct3DX etc) whereas Managed DirectX 2.0 has only a single one (.DirectX) which includes all of the classes. See Managed DirectX files and directory structures

Solution: Remove one of the references. The Managed DirectX 1.1 assemblies will be version 1.0.29xx.0, the Managed DirectX 2.0 assemblies will be version 2.0.0.0. If you choose to go with Managed DirectX 2.0 remember to remove *all* of the Managed DirectX 1.1 assemblies.

The current Microsoft position is that:

Microsoft strongly recommends against using DirectPlay to develop new applications. Game developers should use Windows Sockets and the Windows Firewall APIs

Further details about the reasoning behind this can also be found on the MSDN forums:

DirectPlay was created back before TCP/IP become universal, and the majority of the code in it is for supporting serial head-to-head, modems, IPX, etc. The only functionality missing from the core networking services would be DirectPlay Voice (which has major security concerns) and the lobbying. There are third-party solutions to both of these available today, and we are working on our own offering as well. The point is that DirectPlay doesn't need a 'replacement'. it's functionality has already been largely subsumed by standard network APIs.

With similar message in other lists and forums - DirectX-l #1, #2, DirectX newsgroups #1, #2, #3. Wow, Chuck Walbourn gets around !

For .Net programmers this means write your own stuff using the System.Net and/or System.Net.Sockets namespaces and the PNRP APIs (I do not believe there are any managed implementations of PNRP).
