Sometimes Crowds Aren't That Wise

Last week, computer book publisher SitePoint relayed a story about recent experiences with Digg that demonstrates that the Digg system is far from perfect. We've written recently on ReadWriteWeb about the decline and fall of quality on Digg, but SitePoint's anecdote demonstrates that sometimes the wisdom of crowds approach is, well, kind of dumb. Now is probably a good time to revisit the rules for harnessing the wisdom of the crowds we published on this blog a year ago.

SitePoint's experience is an example of herd behavior or groupthink, where the Digg group acted blindly on poor information, without rationally thinking it through. This is a problem with the wisdom of crowds concept: if unchecked, rather than coming to the best conclusion based on the wisdom of the group, a crowd can come to the worst conclusion based on dumbness that spreads from a single bad node.

Add a Google Reader sidebar

This is good news even if you don’t have an iPhone. Like other web apps designed for the iPhone interface, it fits very well in Firefox (and other browsers) sidebar.

And it’s pretty simple:

Open the Bookmarks Manager (Bookmarks/Organize Bookmarks…)
In Firefox 2, in the File menu, select New bookmark… In Firefox 3, press Organize in the toolbar and select New bookmark…
Enter a name, http://www.google.com/reader/i/ for location, and ensure to check Load this bookmark in the sidebar.
Press Save Changes and now you can select the bookmark to load Google Reader in the sidebar.

One of the rarest things that we do is think. I don’t know why people don’t do it more often. It doesn’t cost anything. Think about that.

There are questions that I’d like answered. But there aren’t any answers to those questions.

If world leaders were doctors, I think they would be more concerned with the welfare of people. There would be less poverty. There would be medical care for everybody, no matter whether people paid for it or not.

In any good society, every member should be interested in the health of every other member. Because if any member is unhealthy, it’s a burden on the society.

Being compassionate, being concerned for your fellow man, doing everything you can to help people -- that’s the kind of religion I have, and it’s a comforting religion. I don’t get involved in discussions of intelligent design. You can’t answer those questions, so why fool with them?

You can never learn enough.

Consider the fact that, since our universe erupted from the super hot, tremendously dense butthole of some parallel universe 14 billion years ago, a 400 quadrillion second long string of events, considered random only by people who have yet to figure out that there's no such thing, has preceded the present, making your sitting there in your little chair picking your nose the culmination of a magnificently intricate and complicated web of gazillions of reactions.

Every particle involved in an event as seemingly chaotic and random as an explosion follows the laws of physics, and will behave accordingly. The inability of your limited brain to predict the outcome such events just because they're highly complicated doesn't make them "random".

SYDNEY: With the ability to combat even red wine stains, a new nanocoating for fabrics offers the promise of wools and silks able to automatically cleanse themselves.

Due to their delicate nature, the process of washing and drying these natural fibres can be potentially damaging. However, by working at the nanoscale, chemists have now bonded tiny particles to the fibres that actively fight stains and grime.

Clean and green

"The ultimate consequence in developing these self-cleaning fabrics is that we can really limit our use of things like chemicals, energy and water," said organic chemist Walid Dauod of Monash University in Melbourne, Australia. "And of course people will save on dry cleaning bills as well."

To create the fabrics, the group made use of nanocrystals of the compound anatase titanium dioxide, which is capable of photocatalytic degradation: this is using light to break down dirt and stains, as well as potentially harmful micro-organisms.

BIOGRAPHY

Paolo Pellizzari, a Belgium-based Italian, made a name for himself with his panoramic work on India « A billion Indians » published by 5 Continents in Milan in 2000.
He subsequently travelled the world in search of « Human landscapes » whose portfolios
are distributed by Vu in Paris, Grazia Neri in Milan, and Polaris in New York. In 2004 he was awarded the Sportel Prize for the best sports book of the year for « Les Tours du Monde » (Tours of the world) in which he photographs the most exotic cycling races on the planet.
His work is regularly displayed in galleries in Turin, Milan, Paris and Brussels

Stories, lost forever

As I’ve already blogged, I was the victim of a phishing scam and my flickr account was deleted.

Yahoo/flickr has known about this particular culprit for a year or so.

miscreant deleted my account, just for fun. And Yahoo can’t restore it. We all know there are backup copies all over the place, but they can only recreate my account, blank.

all the people I’ve linked to are gone (I’ve spent a few hours trying to reconnect with those I can remember). Anyone who watched my photos via their contacts has lost me (and I’ve lost much of my audience).

All the titles, tags, geotags, view counts and comments are gone. All the descriptions and stories and dialog with others in is gone.

My document, my story, my part of the community, is gone.

DataPortability is a movement to create these tools where they don’t exist. I hope someone creates something for flickr soon.
