April 16, 2008—Strings of baby stars take shape in a distant galactic womb, as shown in this new NASA image of the Southern Pinwheel galaxy.

Embryonic stars were found to be growing in the galaxy's spindly arms (shown in red), rather than in its bright heart—a discovery that scientists this week described as "absolutely stunning."

Astronomers had previously believed that such outlying sections of galaxies lacked the necessary materials for star formation.

GUADALAJARA, Mexico (Reuters) - A Canadian woman who became a cause celebre at home after being kept in a Mexican jail for two years without trial, received a five-year prison sentence on Tuesday after being convicted of links to an investment scam.

Martin's lawyer, Guillermo Cruz, called the verdict "irregular" and said there was no evidence to convict her. He told reporters that Martin screamed and collapsed when she heard the verdict and needed medical assistance.

She is one of a string of foreigners in recent years to get embroiled in Mexico's complex and often corrupt criminal justice system that routinely puts suspects behind bars for long periods before their cases are heard.

Martin's arrest was linked to a severance payment she accepted from Waage after he dismissed her.

Gardening may not seem vital, but because food forms up to a fifth of your carbon footprint, growing even a little can mean a lot. It could also catch on and become a green viral fad, Pollan writes. But most of all, it’s empowering, a reminder that you're not helpless and "your body is still good for something.”

Louisiana Pockets Ban on Droopy Drawers

(newser) – A proposed ban on saggy pants didn’t fly in Louisiana, where a Senate panel rejected the legislation as a violation of freedom of speech, reports the Times-Picayune. “This is a situation that is disgusting and needs state attention,” insisted the state senator pushing the bill. “I have the right to walk down the street and not see your dirty drawers.”

The legislation would have made it a crime to wear clothing that “intentionally exposes undergarments” or the genital area. The penalty: a maximum fine of $175 and three days of community service. “We can’t regulate everything,” griped a state senator. “Where does it stop?”

(newser) – If you want to fight global warming, drop the hamburger, Sir Paul McCartney advises. “The biggest change anyone could make in their own lifestyle would be to become vegetarian,” said McCartney, himself a longtime herbivore. Livestock is a big contributor to global warming, the ex-Beatle says, because of the amount of land and water the meat industry uses.

“It's very surprising that most major environmental organizations are leaving the option of going vegetarian off their lists of top ways to curtail global warming,” McCartney told PETA. "I would urge everyone to think about taking this simple step to help our precious environment and save it for the children of the future."
