Healthcare Provision Seeks To Embrace Prayer Treatments

Backed by some of the most powerful members of the Senate, a little-noticed provision in the healthcare overhaul bill would require insurers to consider covering Christian Science prayer treatments as medical expenses.

The provision was inserted by Sen. Orrin G. Hatch (R-Utah) with the support of Democratic Sens. John F. Kerry and the late Edward M. Kennedy, both of Massachusetts, home to the headquarters of the Church of Christ, Scientist.

The measure would put Christian Science prayer treatments -- which substitute for or supplement medical treatments -- on the same footing as clinical medicine. While not mentioning the church by name, it would prohibit discrimination against "religious and spiritual healthcare."

But critics say the measure could have a broader effect, conferring new status and medical legitimacy on practices that lie outside the realm of science.

Do not deny what happened at Fort Hood

President Barack Obama

assumed the "presidential grieving tone" over the Fort Hood massacre, the moment after he'd just done an equally scripted segment of light joking banter for the benefit of the Tribal Nations Conference he was addressing.

What happened at Fort Hood was no kind of "tragedy." It was a criminal act, of the terrorist sort, performed by a man acting upon known Islamist motives.

To present the perpetrator himself as a kind of "victim"

is to misrepresent the reality.

He reportedly shouted "Allahu Akbar!" before opening fire on American soldiers

He shot about 40 people, over 10 minutes, with two pistols, neither of them military issue.

"Muslims should stand up against the aggressor." Do we still have a category for treason?

This deadly enemy of the West -- the Islamist ideology which holds all Jews, Christians, other non-Muslims, and a considerable number of Muslims, too, to be human filth in need of extermination -- is well infiltrated.

US unemployment reaches highest for 26 years

The Labour Department said that 190,000 jobs had been lost in October, worse than the 175,000 expected by economists, pushing the unemployment rate to 10.2 per cent — the highest figure since April 1983.

This week, Labour Department figures showed that first-time claims for jobless benefits had fallen fell by 20,000, better than expected, to a seasonally adjusted 512,000 in the previous seven days

Since the start of the recession in December 2007, the number of unemployed people in America has risen by 8.2 million, and the unemployment rate has grown by 5.3 percentage points.

The largest job losses last month were in construction, manufacturing and retail.

“Our concern is that, unlike the last recovery, with credit still tight, households aren’t going to be able to smooth their consumption using credit until the labour market eventually strengthens,” he said.

Personal insolvencies rise to new record as unemployment bites

More people than ever before were declared insolvent in England and Wales during the third quarter of the year. Figures released by the Insolvency Service yesterday reveal that there were 35,242 personal insolvencies over the three months to the end of September, up by 28 per cent on the same period of 2008, and by 6 per cent on the previous quarter.

Just over half of the insolvencies were fully fledged bankruptcies, while around 17,000 people entered into an individual voluntary arrangement (IVA) or a debt relief order (DRO).

There is also some concern that the Insolvency Service's figures do not include debt management plans, where people agree with their creditors to pay a set amount each month, often of a token sum. These schemes do not count as insolvencies and no central register is kept, though many thousands of struggling borrowers are thought to have been advised to accept such arrangements with lenders.

As Muslims met for weekly prayers in mosques here and nationwide, they underscored their solidarity for the victims of Thursday's rampage at Fort Hood, allegedly by a man whose very name manifests his Muslim heritage.

Muslims have condemned the attack blamed on Army psychiatrist Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan as cowardly and antithetical to core Islamic beliefs and practices, while also issuing warnings to the public and their own communities about the potential for backlash.

Several hundred Muslims gathered in the city's largest mosque, the Islamic Center of San Antonio, where they denounced the shooter's violence and distanced themselves from his version of Islam.

“Most Muslims that do join the Army are Americans first,” he said, “and they're there to protect their country first.”

“I just want to show myself in a positive way for the religion I represent,” he said. “I just hope people don't stereotype.”

said the CIA not only relied on confessions gleaned through extreme torture, it sent terror war suspects to Uzbekistan as part of its extraordinary rendition program.

"I'm talking of people having their children tortured in front of them until they sign a confession. I'm talking of people being boiled alive. And the intelligence from these torture sessions was being received by the CIA, and was being passed on."

What happens after all the fear mongering that Iran is developing a nuclear weapons bunker turns out to be bunk?

U.N. inspectors found "nothing to be worried about" in a first look at a previously secret uranium enrichment site in Iran last month, the International Atomic Energy chief said in remarks published Thursday.

Mohamed ElBaradei also told the New York Times that he was examining possible compromises to unblock a draft nuclear cooperation deal between Iran and three major powers that has foundered over Iranian objections.

The nuclear site, which Iran revealed in September three years after diplomats said Western spies first detected it, added to Western fears of covert Iranian efforts to develop atom bombs. Iran says it is enriching uranium only for electricity.

"It's a hole in a mountain," he said.

After Sgt. Kimberly Munley stopped the Fort Hood massacre by shooting Major Nidal Malik Hasan several times, she collapsed from her wounds and doctors who treated her were afraid she wouldn't survive.

Munley, a 34-year-old former soldier who became a civilian cop on the Fort Hood base, was shot twice in both legs during Thursday's confrontation. Two powerful "cop killer" rounds allegedly fired by Hasan tore through her left thigh, exited and blasted through her right thigh as well. She was also struck in the wrist.

Munley proved to be as tough in the operating room as she was while confronting Hasan in their close range shootout.

Dr. Kelly Matlock, who treated Munley, said her first words in recovery were concern about Hasan's victims.

"She opened her eyes and said, 'Did anybody die?' That's what she said, 'Did anybody die?'" Matlock told "GMA."

Chuck Medley, the director of emergency services at Fort Hood, said many more would have died if Munley hadn't leaped into action.

On MSNBC Friday night, David Shuster (filling in for Ed Shultz) addressed hateful signs at Thursday's Capitol Hill "House call" against health care reform. But the discussion escalated into a fight that led a Republican guest to walk off the set.

Former Colorado congressman Tom Tancredo refused to criticize Republican leaders for participating in the event, saying there were equally offensive signs at anti-Bush rallies in the past. He said they should talk about the policy, not the signs.

Daily Kos founder Markos Moulitas defended health care reform, pointing out that the military uses government-run health care. Tancredo said veterans complained about their health care and would much rather have a private choice.

"Tom, I'm a veteran. Okay?" Moulitas responded. "I did not get a deferment because I was too depressed to fight a war I supported in Vietnam. I'm a veteran. They want a more effective V.A. ..."
