(CNN) -- A 29-year old woman walked into a northern California police station, saying she was abducted 18 years ago, authorities said Thursday. Two people are being held in connection with the case.

Jaycee Dugard is in good health, el Dorado County sheriff's office said in a statement, but provided no further details.

Meanwhile, in Contra Costa County, another sheriff's spokesman confirmed that that a man and a woman have been arrested in connection with the case but could provide no other details.

CNN affiliates have reported that Phillip Garrido, 58, and his wife, Nancy Garrido, have been charged.

Phillip Garrido is a registered sex offender and listed on the Department of Justice's Megan's Law page because of a previous forcible rape charge.

Dog of SPCA CEO Dies
After Left in Car

RICHMOND, Va. - A dog belonging to Robin Starr, the chief executive officer of the Richmond SPCA, died after being left alone for four hours in the car.

In an interview with the Richmond Times-Dispatch at the SPCA's offices, Starr and her husband Ed cried while recounting the story.

Ed said he put the dog, a sixteen year old deaf and blind mutt named Louie, into the vehicle as Robin prepared for work.

Robin arrived at her job without realizing the dog was in the car.

Several hours later when she left to get lunch, Robin saw Louie in the car.

She took the dog inside to the SPCA clinic, then to an emergency veterinary clinic.

The dog died later of kidney failure.

Starr has been CEO of the Richmond SPCA since 1997.

She does not plan to resign.

London Takes Part in Worldwide Candle Lit Vigil for Death Row Dog:

Dog lovers are travelling from across the UK to gather outside the Northern Ireland Office, Millbank, in central London to show unified global support for a pet dog condemned to death by a Magistrates Court in Northern Ireland.

The Candle Lit Vigil is being held for one hour between 9 and 10pm on Thursday 23rd July and coincides with other vigil events being held on the same day in Dublin, New York and Seattle alongside an enormous worldwide candle lit vigil where thousands of people are due to take part in their own homes and work places in recognition of the plight and suffering of a dog named ‘Bruce’ who has captured the hearts and minds of people across the world.

The dog days of summer are officially here, but every day is now dogs’ day at the American Airlines Terminal at John F. Kennedy International Airport.

American has installed a new Pet Relief Area at the terminal’s departure level, so that passengers with pets can give their canine or feline friends a final chance to relieve themselves before packing them away in their kennels for the flight.

“American Airlines is sensitive to the needs of passengers who travel with their pets,” said Joseph Daly, American’s Facilities Maintenance Manager at JFK Airport. “Pets that travel have comfort needs, too, so we wanted to provide a way for them to be comfortable before boarding their flight, just like the rest of us.”

A PUPPY survived having a BBQ fork stuck in its brain for three days before a vet was able to pull the prongs out.

Smokey, a 12-week-old chihuahua, was playing at a family gathering in the US state of Kentucky when an oversized fork snapped in half on a grill and sent the pointy end flying through the air before it embedded in the puppy's head.

Though their justification is environmental rather than animal, researchers at Utrecht University in the Netherlands are trying to grow meat in a lab, raising the possibility of a carnivorous diet disconnected from killing.

Asked whether people would be repulsed by lab-grown meat, Roelen said he believed there would be enough demand, as much of what people eat today is already extensively processed, from the feed that animals consume to the conditions under which they are raised and the preparation of meat after slaughter.

The language here is taken from the U.S. State Department's most recent "Trafficking in Persons" report. The country in question could be the United Kingdom, France, or Italy or any number of industrialized countries whose governments officially banned human slavery a long time ago. But the country referenced above happens to be the United States.

PENN TOWNSHIP, Pa. -- No suspects have been identified yet in the case of a St. Bernard dog that was found shot in the head and stuffed in a sleeping bag in Penn Township, Butler County.

The Humane Society of the United States is offering up to $2,500 as a reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction.

Also, the Butler County Humane Society is offering a $1,450 reward.

A $3,500 reward is being offered for information leading to the arrest of the person or persons responsible for what an area humane society director called "a brutal massacre" of several feral cats at Lock and Dam 13 in Crawford County.

Sebastian County Humane Society Executive Director JoAnn Barton said a night fisherman first noticed injured cats with arrows stuck in their bodies last week.

"He told a sad story about seeing one cat that was shot and dead on the ground and a littermate licking on it, trying to get it to get up," Barton said. "It was a massacre. A brutal massacre was all it was."

NASHVILLE – It was the judgment the Smoak family was hoping for, but not the kind they ever wanted to hear.

A federal jury awarded James Smoak $9,100 and found Sgt. David Bush guilty of using excessive force against Smoak.

The case stemmed from a traffic stop on New Year’s day in 2003, when the Tennessee Highway Patrol stopped the family on Interstate 40.

Mistaken as robbery suspects the Smoaks were forced out of their vehicle as a patrol car video captured the disturbing events that transpired.

The video shows the family’s pleas of protest that they were just vacationing and passing through on their return trip home to North Carolina.

Conan, a 150 lb Mastiff belonging to Liam and Amanda O’Hara, was shot in the chest with a razor tipped hunting arrow at his home in the 4200 block of Second Avenue Northeast, Wellington, WA on Tuesday night/Wednesday morning. There were hopes that Conan, would survive, but sadly he didn’t make it.

“He had some internal bleeding in his lungs, and he couldn’t make it,” said Amanda O’Hara. “This was an intentionally cruel act toward our dog. It’s horrible.”

Canada's annual seal hunt, which the government promised would be more humane this year, cranked up slowly today because of thick ice.

The government is allowing hunters to kill up to 275,000 young harp seals on the ice floes off Eastern Canada, but only three had been reported killed on the first morning of the hunt in the Gulf of St. Lawrence.

"It's a very slow start," said Phil Jenkins, spokesman for the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, noting that sealing boats were finding it difficult to get to the herds because of thick ice.

Anti-sealing groups complained they had not yet been allowed to observe the sealing and said that in any case the government's new killing procedures, intended to ensure a swift death, were not likely to be more humane.

BOULDER, Colo. - Police say a man shot a cat with a rifle and sent e-mails to relatives to tell them he did it "to get even" with his wife.

Longmont police say they arrested 50-year-old Paul John Vickers Wednesday after his wife's sister told police of the e-mail in which Vickers wrote about killing "Bootsie." Police Sergeant Tim Lewis says the married couple was involved in a long-running argument and Vickers was angry at his wife.
