Though their justification is environmental rather than animal, researchers at Utrecht University in the Netherlands are trying to grow meat in a lab, raising the possibility of a carnivorous diet disconnected from killing.

Asked whether people would be repulsed by lab-grown meat, Roelen said he believed there would be enough demand, as much of what people eat today is already extensively processed, from the feed that animals consume to the conditions under which they are raised and the preparation of meat after slaughter.

<clipSource>http://blog.wired.com/wiredscience/2007/06/eating_meat_wit.html</clipSource>

Modern enslavement

clipped by: sherrymac

Clip Source: www.washingtontimes.com

Modern enslavement

New York City -- Tomorrow, Oprah Winfrey, Glenn Close, and others will gather in New Orleans for the 10th anniversary of V-Day, a global movement to end violence against women and girls.
The government is allowing hunters to kill up to 275,000 young harp seals on the ice floes off Eastern Canada, but only three had been reported killed on the first morning of the hunt in the Gulf of St. Lawrence.

"It's a very slow start," said Phil Jenkins, spokesman for the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, noting that sealing boats were finding it difficult to get to the herds because of thick ice.

Anti-sealing groups complained they had not yet been allowed to observe the sealing and said that in any case the government's new killing procedures, intended to ensure a swift death, were not likely to be more humane.

Tags: canada's annual seal hunt

<clipSource>http://news.ninemsn.com.au/article.aspx?id=418921</clipSource>

Man Allegedly Shoots Cat 'To Get Even'

clipped by: sherrymac

Clip Source: www.care2.com

Clip Source: my.earthlink.net

BOULDER, Colo. - Police say a man shot a cat with a rifle and sent e-mails to relatives to tell them he did it "to get even" with his wife.

As a rule, large-breed dogs mature earlier than small dogs. But if your dog is age seven or older, he’s probably approaching, or in, his senior years. This may mean a change in lifestyle for him and for you.

Companionship and commitment to your dog have always been important, but these are even more important now. Even though your dog may be slowing down, there is no reason the older years can’t be some of the best years. With regular veterinary attention, daily care and proper nutrition, your older dog can still experience a happy and healthy life.

<clipSource>http://www.care2.com/news/member/100041282/681021</clipSource>

Sea levels rising too fast for Thames Barrier

clipped by: sherrymac

Clip Source: www.independent.co.uk

A fear that sea levels will rise far faster than predicted this century has led to a revision of the plan to protect London from a devastating flood caused by the sort of storm surge in the North Sea that resulted in the closure of the Thames Barrier yesterday.

It was the 108th time that the barrier had to be closed since it became operational in 1982 but scientists are concerned that rapidly rising sea levels could significantly shorten the expected lifespan of one of the world's biggest anti-flood structures.

When the Thames Barrier was being designed in the 1970s, global average sea levels were rising at about 1.8 millimetres a year and global warming was not seen as a threat, but in the past 15 years the rate has nearly doubled to about 3.1mm a year and many scientists expect it to accelerate still further.

<clipSource>http://www.independent.co.uk/environment/climate-change/sea-levels-rising-too-fast-for-thames-barrier-799303.html</clipSource>

Think twice before buying an Easter bunny

clipped by: sherrymac

Clip Source: www.theithacajournal.com

A Wichita man who pleaded guilty this month to having sex with a dog was sentenced Wednesday to six months in jail -- the maximum under Kansas law -- and ordered to register as a sex offender.

District Judge Joseph Bribiesca also ordered Joshua Coman to meet with a psychiatrist during his stay in the Sedgwick County Jail.

In arguing for the maximum sentence, prosecutor Aaron Smith noted that Coman, 20, was on probation for a similar conviction in Reno County when he was arrested Feb. 19 in Wichita. He was charged in the Wichita case with having sex with a 4-year-old female rottweiler owned by an acquaintance.

Tags: dog, sex, animal abuse, cruelty

<clipSource>http://www.kansas.com/news/local/story/347044.html</clipSource>
