SYDNEY (AFP) – A monster iceberg has been spotted drifting towards Australia in what scientists Wednesday called a once-in-a-century event.

Young said the iceberg measured about 140 square kilometres (54 square miles).

He said the "very, very big" iceberg was originally about 400 square kilometres but then split into two smaller pieces.

"This one has survived in the open ocean for about a year," he said. "In that time it's slowly been coming up to the north and north east in the general direction of Western Australia."

Australian glaciologist Neal Young pinpointed the slab, which is some 19 kilometres (12 miles) long, about 1,700 kilometres south of the country, using satellite imagery.

LOS ANGELES – Nicolas Cage's ex-girlfriend is suing the actor and his former business manager, claiming she is owed more than $13 million and a house the actor promised her.

Christina Fulton, who is the mother of Cage's adult son, Weston, sued the Oscar-winner in Los Angeles on Tuesday. She claims Cage promised her a home in Los Angeles' Hancock Park neighborhood, but that she has now been ordered to leave the property.

Cage has given her far more than the $6,000 per month he was required to pay her under a court order. Cage has paid $3 million per year on behalf of Fulton in recent years

Fulton and Cage's son was born in 1990, and the couple split about four years later,

Cage is known for his dramatic roles in films such as "Leaving Las Vegas" and "Adaptation" as well as action turns in "The Rock" and "Con Air."

DALLAS – After fighting his way across Europe during World War II, John Pistone was among the U.S. soldiers who entered Adolf Hitler's home nestled in the Bavarian Alps as the war came to a close.

Making his way through the Berghof, Hitler's home near Berchtesgaden, Germany, Pistone noticed a table with shelves underneath. Exhilarated by the certainty of victory over the Nazis, Pistone took an album filled with photographs of paintings as a souvenir.

"It was really a great feeling to be there and we knew, by that time, he was on his last leg," Pistone told The Associated Press.

Sixty-four years after Pistone brought the album home to Ohio, the 87-year-old has learned its full significance: It's part of a series compiled for Hitler featuring art he wanted for his "Fuhrermuseum," a planned museum in Linz, Austria, Hitler's hometown.

KAMPALA, Uganda – Proposed legislation would impose the death penalty for some gay Ugandans, and their family and friends could face up to seven years in jail if they fail to report them to authorities. Even landlords could be imprisoned for renting to homosexuals.

Gay rights activists say the bill, which has prompted growing international opposition, promotes hatred and could set back efforts to combat HIV/AIDS. They believe the bill is part of a continentwide backlash because Africa's gay community is becoming more vocal.

"It's a question of visibility," said David Cato, who became an activist after he was beaten up four times, arrested twice, fired from his teaching job and outed in the press because he is gay. "When we come out and ask for our rights, they pass laws against us."

Virgin Galactic unveils commercial spaceship

MOJAVE, Calif. – The sleek, bullet-shaped spacecraft is about the size of a large business jet — with wide windows and seats for six well-heeled passengers to take a ride into space.

It's billed as the world's first commercial spaceship, designed to be carried aloft by an exotic jet before firing its rocket engine to climb beyond the Earth's atmosphere.

On Monday, Virgin Galactic took the cloak off SpaceShipTwo, which had been under secret development for two years. The company plans to sell suborbital space rides for $200,000 a ticket, offering passengers 2 1/2-hour flights that include about five minutes of weightlessness.

The British billionaire hopes to begin passenger flights out of New Mexico sometime in 2011 after a series of rigorous safety tests. Branson said he, his family and Rutan will be the first to fly on SpaceShipTwo.

Shots fired during Lindhout release

Shots were fired at the vehicle carrying kidnapped Canadian journalist Amanda Lindhout during her release this week in Somalia, CBC News has learned.

Lindhout arrived in Nairobi, Kenya, on Thursday, a day after being released in Somalia after 15 months of captivity.

Sources with knowledge of the negotiations confirmed to CBC News on Thursday that the total ransom paid for the release of Lindhout and Brennan was $600,000 US.

As part of the exchange agreement, the journalists were picked up by a couple of Somalian MPs, who were going to hand them over to the security service in exchange for the money.

"Months ago a couple of French nationals were kidnapped there," the source said. "It was not a safe place."

Search continues for missing boy, 7

More searchers are joining the effort to find James Delorey, a seven-year-old boy with autism who wandered away from his Cape Breton home two days ago.

So far there have been no signs of Delorey or his dog, Chance.

"We'll go full force ahead as long as we have to," said Desiree Vassalo, spokeswoman for Cape Breton Regional Police. "We're really exploring any and all possibilities."

Delorey, who doesn't speak, wandered out of the family backyard in South Bar Saturday afternoon, apparently following the dog. He was wearing only jeans, a shirt and a vest — nothing to prepare for the cold temperatures and heavy snow that hit the area that day.

Vassalo said searchers hope the boy found shelter somewhere and that his dog, a Dalmation mix, is with him.

Hundreds of volunteers have come out to help, either to help in the search or provide food for searchers.

Lawsuit: Salahis bounced $24K check for liquor buy

ROCKVILLE, Md. – The Virginia couple at the center of last week's White House security breach is now accused of bouncing a nearly $24,000 check for liquor purchased in Maryland.

The Montgomery County government, which conducts all the wholesale liquor sales on its territory, filed a lawsuit Thursday against Michaele and Tareq Salahi, the couple who got into a state dinner last week without an invitation. The Salahis purchased wine and beer for America's Polo Cup World Championship, a charity polo event they held in the county in May.

According to documents filed in Montgomery County District Court, the couple returned more than $10,000 worth of merchandise, but they still owe more than $13,000 from the bounced check.

Edmonton blasted with winter

Edmontonians are paying for a balmy November with a December blast of winter. And it's going from bad to worse with a forecast calling for a deep freeze starting tonight.

Slick roads caught commuters and city crews by surprise yesterday, making for treacherous conditions as drivers had to cope with as much as 15 cm of snow and high winds while plows and graders struggled to keep up.

Bob Dunford, the city's director of roadway maintenance, said the heavy snow hit later in the morning than hoped for and, despite an armada of 83 trucks sanding and plowing, by rush hour traffic had to contend with poor conditions and slow commutes.

"We're working at it."

Despite the efforts of road crews, Edmontonians weathered a difficult day of collisions, stuck vehicles and crawling commutes.

Starting tomorrow, Kulak said Edmontonians can look forward to daytime highs in the -20 degree range for what could be the entire week.

It was a traumatic and tumultuous time for four long-time friends and co-workers who hit the lottery jackpot and ended up doubting each other.

But the guilty plea Friday of former Toronto convenience store owner Hafiz Malik has brought the fleeced friends some closure, says their lawyer, Greg Harris.

Malik admitted he stole their winning 6/49 lottery ticket and pocketed $5.7 million, though he pleaded guilty to defrauding the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corp., which cut the four a cheque for the full amount, plus almost $800,000 in interest, two years ago.

When Teicht brought the winning ticket to his tiny shop on Dupont St. in June 2004 for validation, he "did not tell her it was a winner," Crown Attorney Philip Perlmutter told court reading from an agreed statement of facts.

Malik hung onto the ticket before claiming it as his own in January 2005.

MEDFORD, Ore. – Searchers combed icy roads near the crest of the Cascade Range early Thursday, looking for a missing couple who told their children they were seeking a Christmas tree high in the southern Oregon mountains.

"It's cold weather and not a lot of snow, but there's ice out there," making backcountry roads treacherous, Rowland said. "If the car tipped over, it's not going to be easy to spot."

The couple did tell their four kids, ages 8 to 18, that they hoped to bring back a silvertip fir, a prized tree found only at high elevations.
