Could Facebook be the new Flickr? Thanks to its photo-sharing tools, Facebook now receives more uploaded images a day than Flickr, the leading brand in photo-sharing.

Then again, Facebook connects you to your friends, offers both tools and time-wasters, leaves you swamped with offers to join groups you don't care about, responds in a reactionary way to bogus events, takes more of your time every day, and gets harder to live without all the time. So Facebook is the new e-mail!

Yesterday, Facebook began notifying members they can choose to keep their listings private or to allow Facebook to make their name and profile picture available when outsiders search the site. Facebook's move to publicize member profiles could attract a new wave of users.

[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This serpiginious road is the famous ancient silk route which connected central Asia with India for trade purpose once upon a time. It is believed that Buddhism travelled all the way to China & SE Asia via this route. One can still find Mongolian double hump bactrian camels in Nubra valley on this route.

This picture has been clicked from the altitude of 17,000 feet above sea level on our way to Khardung La highest motorable pass on the silk route. Far is the Leh valley with Zanskar mountain ranges at horizon.

While this will certainly present an interesting application of the PD game, there is an even more forceful player coming into the market, if not by sheer size and image base, but because they are are migrating from being a social-networking photo-sharing site, to be being a stock licensing site. Recently, smugmug has alerted their contributor-base that they are within "weeks" of turning on a new feature that will allow licensing of photos. While smugmug has been solely a photo-sharing site for years--and a profitable one at that--it was only in the last year that sufficient push from their membership convinced them to allow them to sell/license their photos. (They had always been able to sell their photos as prints to anyone that wants to buy them.)

clipper's remarks: Pixia is a free painting and photo finishing tool originally created in Japan by Isao Maruoka. There it quickly became rather popular and after some time there appeared versions of the program in other languages including English, German, French, Italian, Spanish, Korean, Chinese (simplified form), Polish and Hungarian. Now there is a rather big circle of Pixia fans who help to develop Pixia, create filters and masks for it, as well as plugins.
