Patal Bhuvaneshwar is the name of a natural cave located in the Gangolihat region of Pithoragarh District in Uttarakhand State (India). The cave is an auspicious place of worship, revered by Hindus since ancient times. The uniqueness of the cave is its natural rocks inside, which are distinctly shaped like our gods and goddesses. Be it Sheshnag, Lord Ganesha or Lord Narsimha, nature has crudely moulded the rocks here to represent their replicas.

estimates that the Indian sub-continent has moved 4,400 kilometers northwards
since the close of the Mesozoic era, 140 million years ago. About the Middle
Permian or more than 200 million years ago, an extensive sea stretched
along the latitude presently occupied by the Himalaya. Into this geosynclinal
sea known as the Tethys (daughter of the Ocean) was depostited vast quantities
of sediments from the northern Angara (Eurasian) and southern Gondwana
(Indian) land mass. The Initial mountain building process started seventy
million years ago when the Gondwana plate and Angara plate began to converge
and collide. The sea-bed was folded and raised into longitudinal ridges
and valleys. This Upper Cretaceous uplift was the first spasm of Himalayan
orogeny.

EXAMINING THE HIMALAYAS

by: Claire Zimmerman

Tags: tethys

<clipSource>http://www.coloradocollege.edu/Dept/GY/faculty/wphillips/Mountains.html</clipSource>

Emergence and evolution of Himalaya by K. Emergence and evolution of Himalaya: reconstructing history in the light of recent studies

K. S. India collided with mainland Asia at 65 Ma. The pressure rose to 9-11 kbar in the collision zone. As the Indian lithosphere bent down and its upper crust buckled up as an upwarp in the period 35-45 Ma, the southern margin of Asia became the water-divide of the Himalayan rivers.

The sea retreated from the Himalayan province by the early Miocene, even as the crust broke up along faults 20-22 million years ago.

ivers carried detritus generated by the denudation of the fast emerging Himalaya and deposited it in the foreland basin which turned fluvial around 23 Ma.

The Himadri then became high enough to cause disruption of wind circulation, culminating in the onset of monsoon. The climate change that followed caused migration of a variety of quadrupeds from Africa and Eurasia, bringing about considerable faunal turnovers in the Siwalik life.

Tags: tethys

<clipSource>http://ppg.sagepub.com/cgi/content/abstract/26/3/360</clipSource>

Sacred river endangered by global warming:GANGES RIVER

clipped by: shankargallery
clipper's remarks: Quoted;"While India is one of the world's top producers of greenhouse gas emissions -- along with the United States, China, Russia and Japan -- it argues that the United States and other developed countries should reduce their own emissions before expecting developing nations to follow suit.

Environmentalists say that kind of thinking is shortsighted and that India desperately needs strong laws in place at a time when the country is growing so quickly."

Clip Source: www.msnbc.msn.com

Sacred river endangered by global warming

By Emily Wax

Updated: 1:36 a.m. CT June 17, 2007

In this 3,000-year-old city known as the Jerusalem of India for its intense religious devotion, climate change could throw into turmoil something many devout Hindus thought was immutable: their most intimate religious traditions. The Gangotri glacier, which provides up to 70 percent of the water of the Ganges during the dry summer months, is shrinking at a rate of 40 yards a year, nearly twice as fast as two decades ago, scientists say.

But recent reports by scientists say the Ganges is under an even greater threat from global warming. According to a U.N. climate report, the Himalayan glaciers that are the sources of the Ganges could disappear by 2030 as temperatures rise.

The immediate effect of glacier recession is a short-lived surplus of water. But eventually the supply runs out, and experts predict that the Ganges eventually will become a seasonal river, largely dependent on monsoon rains.

Tags: ganges, himalaya

<clipSource>http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/19268167/</clipSource>

By Kailash Traveler

clipped by: shankargallery
clipper's remarks: panorama photo

Clip Source: kailashtraveler.livejournal.com

Kailash Traveler (kailashtraveler) wrote,
@ 2007-06-08 11:20:00

Tags: himalaya

<clipSource>http://kailashtraveler.livejournal.com/26424.html</clipSource>

kailash manasarovar experiences byShrilatha Puthi

clipped by: shankargallery
clipper's remarks: I had tough time moving up and down, and it made me tired. We were supposed to go to a place called Ashtapad to get closer view of Mt. Kailash. We went halfway through and found out that the way is blocked. While returning we saw a nice-looking shrine, and we decided to go exploring in Tarchen.

Tags: himalaya

<clipSource>http://sillylittlethings.blogspot.com/2007/06/kailash-manasarovar-experiences-part-3.html</clipSource>

Digital Himalaya Project

clipped by: shankargallery
clipper's remarks: The Digital Himalaya Project is digitising archival collections of ethnographic information from the Himalayan region. Digital Himalaya Project is digitising archival collections of
ethnographic information from the Himalayan region. Five major anthropological
collections were selected for digitisation in the first phase of
the project to reflect a range of different media and a wide coverage
of geographical areas and ethnic populations from across the Himalayas.
Alongside these visual and audio collections, we have more recently digitised an
extensive set of back issues of Himalayan journals and maps and have created
layered GIS maps of Nepal's 75 districts. Our newest collection is an interactive online version of the 2001 Census of Nepal. Click

During this time, conferences and papers have been written about the topic and media coverage has also increased on this issue.

And finally, here comes the most comprehensive study on the topic-- Impact of Climate Change on Himalayan Glaciers and Glacial Lakes: Case Studies on GLOF and Associated Hazards in Nepal and Bhutan. This 119-page scientific study focuses on the impact of warming temperatures on glaciers and glacial lakes in the Himalayan region. It warns of impending glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs) – when rising waters from glacial melt breach dams in glacial lakes – and calls for early warning and mitigation measures to avert disaster.

The document, released on June 5 in Kathmandu and Bangkok on the World Environment Day, is jointly produced by the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) with the United N

Clip Source: www.nepalmonitor.com

The Impending Himalayan Outburst

The Himalayan glacial lakes are about to burst. There are at least 42 in Nepal and Bhutan that are potentially dangerous. And those in the Dudh Koshi and Pho Chu basins are the most precarious.
The mountain range feeds nine perennial river systems in the region and constitutes a lifeline for nearly 1.3 billion people downstream.

Melting glaciers are also leading to some of the fastest-growing glacial lakes in the region. Some glacial lakes have grown by almost 800 per cent since the 1970s.

Glacial floods are a regular occurrence in the Himalaya region with varying degrees of socio-economic impact. Their impact can be quite extensive since they destroy villages, agricultural lands, roads, bridges, hydropower, trekking trails as well human lives and property.

Tags: climate

<clipSource>http://www.nepalmonitor.com/2007/06/the_impending_himala.html</clipSource>

Tethyan Himalaya : Eduardo Garzanti

clipped by: shankargallery
clipper's remarks: A complex interplay of tectonic, eustatic and oceanographic processes concurred in the development of ‘drowning unconformities’ at the top of the Giumal clastic shelf. Rapid deepening and waning of both volcanic and quartzo-feldspathic terrigenous detritus are mainly ascribed to the global mid-Cretaceous sea-level rise and to rapid thermo-tectonic subsidence at the end of the short-lived Albian magmatic event, possibly related to a mantle plume rising beneath northern India. Intensification of the east-bound oceanic current off the north margin of India after the final break-up of Gondwanaland was responsible for continuous resuspension and minimal accumulation rates around the shelf-break. The associated coastal upwelling favoured impingement of the oxygen-minimum zone on the outer shelf, with glauco-phosphorite deposition coinciding in time with peak global transgressions and ‘anoxic events’ in the world oceans.

Clip Source: sp.lyellcollection.org

Tethyan Himalaya
