Patal Bhuvaneshwar

Patal Bhuvaneshwar is the name of a natural cave located in the Gangolihat region of Pithoragarh District in Uttarakhand State (India). The cave is an auspicious place of worship, revered by Hindus since ancient times. The uniqueness of the cave is its natural rocks inside, which are distinctly shaped like our gods and goddesses. Be it Sheshnag, Lord Ganesha or Lord Narsimha, nature has crudely moulded the rocks here to represent their replicas.

The theory of plate tectonics estimates that the Indian sub-continent has moved 4,400 kilometers northwards since the close of the Mesozoic era, 140 million years ago. About the Middle Permian or more than 200 million years ago, an extensive sea stretched along the latitude presently occupied by the Himalaya. Into this geosynclinal sea known as the Tethys (daughter of the Ocean) was depostited vast quantities of sediments from the northern Angara (Eurasian) and southern Gondwana (Indian) land mass. The Initial mountain building process started seventy million years ago when the Gondwana plate and Angara plate began to converge and collide. The sea-bed was folded and raised into longitudinal ridges and valleys. This Upper Cretaceous uplift was the first spasm of Himalayan orogeny.

The sea retreated fromthe Himalayan province by the early Miocene, even as the crustbroke up along faults 20-22 million years ago.

Sacred river endangered by global warming

In this 3,000-year-old city known as the Jerusalem of India for its intense religious devotion, climate change could throw into turmoil something many devout Hindus thought was immutable: their most intimate religious traditions. The Gangotri glacier, which provides up to 70 percent of the water of the Ganges during the dry summer months, is shrinking at a rate of 40 yards a year, nearly twice as fast as two decades ago, scientists say.

But recent reports by scientists say the Ganges is under an even greater threat from global warming. According to a U.N. climate report, the Himalayan glaciers that are the sources of the Ganges could disappear by 2030 as temperatures rise.

The immediate effect of glacier recession is a short-lived surplus of water. But eventually the supply runs out, and experts predict that the Ganges eventually will become a seasonal river, largely dependent on monsoon rains.

After our stint at Manasarover, we proceeded further that day early in the evening to Tarchen, the place considered as base camp for parikrama (parikrama is walking around Mt. Kailash in clockwise direction, like a pradakshiNa). This place looks decent, better than other places we had stayed - Subha and me exchanged thoughts once we reached Tarchen. We were supposed to go to a place called Ashtapad to get closer view of Mt. Kailash. We went halfway through and found out that the way is blocked. While returning we saw a nice-looking shrine, and we decided to go exploring in Tarchen.

And finally, here comes the most comprehensive study on the topic-- Impact of Climate Change on Himalayan Glaciers and Glacial Lakes: Case Studies on GLOF and Associated Hazards in Nepal and Bhutan. This 119-page scientific study focuses on the impact of warming temperatures on glaciers and glacial lakes in the Himalayan region. It warns of impending glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs) – when rising waters from glacial melt breach dams in glacial lakes – and calls for early warning and mitigation measures to avert disaster.

The Impending Himalayan Outburst

The Himalayan glacial lakes are about to burst. There are at least 42 in Nepal and Bhutan that are potentially dangerous. And those in the Dudh Koshi and Pho Chu basins are the most precarious.

Nearly 15000 glaciers and 9000 glacial lakes are found in the Himalayan mountain chain which stretches 2500 km across five countries – Bhutan, Nepal, Pakistan, India and China. The mountain range feeds nine perennial river systems in the region and constitutes a lifeline for nearly 1.3 billion people downstream.

Melting glaciers are also leading to some of the fastest-growing glacial lakes in the region. Some glacial lakes have grown by almost 800 per cent since the 1970s.

Glacial floods are a regular occurrence in the Himalaya region with varying degrees of socio-economic impact. Their impact can be quite extensive since they destroy villages, agricultural lands, roads, bridges, hydropower, trekking trails as well human lives and property.

Rapid deepening and waning of both volcanic and quartzo-feldspathic terrigenous detritus are mainly ascribed to the global mid-Cretaceous sea-level rise and to rapid thermo-tectonic subsidence at the end of the short-lived Albian magmatic event, possibly related to a mantle plume rising beneath northern India. Intensification of the east-bound oceanic current off the north margin of India after the final break-up of Gondwanaland was responsible for continuous resuspension and minimal accumulation rates around the shelf-break. The associated coastal upwelling favoured impingement of the oxygen-minimum zone on the outer shelf, with glauco-phosphorite deposition coinciding in time with peak global transgressions and ‘anoxic events’ in the world oceans.
